ROC curves analysis for third-trimester VI and FI suggested a slight ability to predict macrosomia; this was also the case for AC and EFW. Interestingly, VI showed high sensitivity and low specificity, while FI showed low sensitivity and high specificity; this was also the case for AC and EFW.

Three-dimensional power Doppler ultrasound indices were significantly higher during the third-trimester for pregnancies developing macrosomia. However, these indices had only moderate ability to predict macrosomia.

Masticatory function of institutionalised elders and its relationship with nutrition and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) are unknown.

This multicentre cross-sectional study evaluated the influence of the presence of teeth and dentures on masticatory function (masticatory performance and swallowing threshold) in institutionalised elders. Correlation of masticatory function with nutrition and OHRQoL was also verified.

Older adults (n=344; mean age (SD) = 77.70 (9.10)), selected from nursing homes in two Brazilian cities, were classified as edentulous with or without complete dentures (CDs), and partially dentate with or without prosthesis. Masticatory performance was assessed using a two-colour chewing gum. Swallowing threshold was set by the number of chewing cycles performed until swallowing 3.7g of peanuts. Nutrition was screened by Mini-Nutritional Assessment-Short Form and body composition. OHRQoL was evaluated through Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) and Oral Health Impactir OHRQoL was negatively impacted.Drosophila males sing a courtship song to achieve copulations with females. Females were recently found to sing a distinct song during copulation, which depends on male seminal fluid transfer and delays female remating. Here, it is hypothesized that female copulation song is a signal directed at the copulating male and changes ejaculate allocation. This may alter female remating and sperm usage, and thereby affect postcopulatory mate choice. Mechanisms of how female copulation song is elicited, how males respond to copulation song, and how remating is modulated, are considered. The potential adaptive value of female signaling during copulation is discussed with reference to vertebrate copulation calls and their proposed function in eliciting mate guarding. Female copulation song may be widespread within the Drosophila genus. This newly discovered behavior opens many interesting avenues for future research, including investigation of how sexually dimorphic neuronal circuits mediate communication between nervous system and reproductive organs.

The risk of cardiovascular disease and associated skeletal muscle microvascular rarefaction is enhanced in women after menopause, yet knowledge about the angiogenic potential in ageing women is generally sparse. Aged healthy and sedentary women were found to present a markedly impaired capacity for proliferation of skeletal muscle derived microvascular endothelial cells compared to young women. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in skeletal muscle myocytes and release of VEGF from myocytes tended to be lower in aged compared to young women. The aged women did not show a detectable increase in skeletal muscle capillarization with 8weeks of intense aerobic cycle training. Combined, the findings indicate that aged women have a reduced potential for capillary growth in skeletal muscle which, with ageing, may lead to age-induced microvascular rarefaction.

Skeletal muscle angiogenic potential was examined in cell cultures derived from aged and young women, and the effect of 8weeks of intense cycleogenic potential, which is associated with a compromised response both at the skeletal muscle myocyte and microvascular endothelial cell level.

Patient participation is fundamental to nursing care and has beneficial effects on patient outcomes. However, it is not well embedded yet and little is known on how nurses could effectively stimulate patient participation in hospital care. The Tell-us Card is a communication tool for inviting patients to talk about their preferences and needs, and to increase patient participation in daily care.

To assess feasibility and early effectiveness of the Tell-us Card communication tool for enhanced patient participation during hospitalisation.

A pilot cluster randomised controlled study design was used including four nursing wards. Effectiveness was measured with the Individualized Care Scale (ICS) and the Quality from the Patients' Perspective (QPP) questionnaire. Linear mixed model analysis was used for analysis. Feasibility was assessed with an evaluative questionnaire for patients and nurses and by reviewing the content of Tell-us Cards using the Fundamentals of Care Framework (FOCF) for analysis. Ethical ication tool on patient participation, although integration in daily nursing care appeared to be complex and an optimal fit has not yet been reached. Patients were positive about the intervention and wrote meaningful issues on the Tell-us Cards. More research is needed on how to incorporate patient participation effectively in complex hospital care.We identified lentil products with both nutritional value and antioxidant capacity by studying the changes of probiotics and functional substances during single fermentation with lactic acid bacteria (LAB) or co-fermentation using LAB and Bacillus subtilis natto. After fermentation, the best growth of LAB was observed in anaerobic solid-state co-fermentation, whereby the viable counts of Lactobacillus plantarum TK9 and Lactobacillus paracasei TK1501 reached 2.77 × 109 and 2.78 × 109 CFU/g, respectively. Furthermore, the total phenol and genistin content produced by the two mixed groups, respectively, increased by 0.52- and 0.66-fold, as well as 0.63- and 0.64-fold, compared with unfermented samples. Similarly, the free amino acid content increased by 0.53- and 0.49-fold, respectively. Peficitinib molecular weight The 50% inhibitory concentrations for the radical-scavenging against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity were lower following anaerobic co-fermentation. Consistently, products of anaerobic mixed solid-state fermentation had higher oxygen radical absorbance capacity.
