Older adults showed better perception of positive and negative dynamic facial expressions, while young adults showed better perception of positive isolated dynamic bodily expressions. Importantly, emotion perception of faces with bodies was comparable across ages.

Dynamic emotion perception in young and older adults may be more similar than previously assumed, especially when the task is more realistic and ecological. Our results emphasize the importance of contextualized and ecological tasks in emotion perception across ages.

However, less is known about the intersections of mental illness and unemployment in the U.S. immigrant population. This study examined whether unemployment is a predictor of mental illness in a sample of immigrants in the United States (N = 3,732). Data were from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions, a three-wave, nationally representative dataset. Multivariate logistical regression analysis examined whether the main effects of a negative employment status were associated with a mental health diagnosis at Wave 2. Negative employment status was a significant predictor of all mental health diagnoses in the multivariate logistic regression models. The results from this study indicate that unemployment is associated with mental health problems among immigrants. selleck chemicals llc This article presents discussion and implications for social work practice, policy, and research. This qualitative study examines the notion of home as it relates to place making, belonging, and community building. Using a phenomenological method of inquiry, data were gathered through in-depth qualitative interviews with 15 Somali Americans and subjected to transcendental phenomenological analyses. Three major themes were found (1) the meaning of community being Somali and Muslim; (2) "We help each other. We are connected"; and (3) "Home is where your root is." The study findings highlight how Somali participants drew on their faith and culture as foundational to community building and drew on acts of mutual giving and receiving to bind them together even as subjective feelings of "home" could be place based or could transcend geography. Although sometimes disrupted by bias and discrimination, Somalis persevered in defining themselves and pursuing a sense of belonging both within their own community and in the city at large. This study offers an expansive and dynamic view of the meaning of place making, community building, and belonging (home) in the lives of displaced refugees. Both research and practice can benefit from special attention given to the "natural" formation of refugee communities and their role in enhancing adjustment to life in a new land.

To evaluate the impact of coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, minimal lumen area (MLA), and length of coronary artery stenosis on the diagnostic performance of the machine-learning-based computed tomography-derived fractional flow reserve (ML-FFR).

In 471 patients with coronary artery disease, computed tomography angiography (CTA) and invasive coronary angiography were performed with fractional flow reserve (FFR) in 557 lesions at a single centre. Diagnostic performances of ML-FFR, computational fluid dynamics-based CT-FFR (CFD-FFR), MLA, quantitative coronary angiography (QCA), and visual stenosis grading were evaluated using invasive FFR as a reference standard. Diagnostic performances were analysed according to lesion characteristics including the MLA, length of stenosis, CAC score, and stenosis degree. ML-FFR was obtained by automated feature selection and model building from quantitative CTA. A total of 272 lesions showed significant ischaemia, defined by invasive FFR ≤0.80. There was a significant correlation between CFD-FFR and ML-FFR (r = 0.99, P < 0.001). ML-FFR showed moderate sensitivity and specificity in the per-patient analysis. Diagnostic performances of CFD-FFR and ML-FFR did not decline in patients with high CAC scores (CAC > 400). Sensitivities of CFD-FFR and ML-FFR showed a downward trend along with the increase in lesion length and decrease in MLA. The area under the curve (AUC) of ML-FFR (0.73) was higher than those of QCA and visual grading (AUC = 0.65 for both, P < 0.001) and comparable to those of MLA (AUC = 0.71, P = 0.21) and CFD-FFR (AUC = 0.73, P = 0.86).

ML-FFR showed comparable results to MLA and CFD-FFR for the prediction of lesion-specific ischaemia. Specificities and accuracies of CFD-FFR and ML-FFR decreased with smaller MLA and long lesion length.

Bio-Rad droplet-digital PCR is a highly sensitive method that can be used to detect tumor mutations in circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) of patients with cancer. Correct interpretation of ddPCR results is important for optimal sensitivity and specificity. Despite its widespread use, no standardized method to interpret ddPCR data is available, nor have technical artifacts affecting ddPCR results been widely studied.

False positive rates were determined for 6 ddPCR assays at variable amounts of input DNA, revealing polymerase induced false positive events (PIFs) and other false positives. An in silico correction algorithm, known as the adaptive LoB and PIFs an automated correction algorithm (ALPACA), was developed to remove PIFs and apply an adaptive limit of blank (LoB) to individual samples. Performance of ALPACA was compared to a standard strategy (no PIF correction and static LoB = 3) using data from commercial reference DNA, healthy volunteer cfDNA, and cfDNA from a real-life cohort of 209 patients with stage IV nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC) whose tumor and cfDNA had been molecularly profiled.

Applying ALPACA reduced false positive results in healthy cfDNA compared to the standard strategy (specificity 98 vs 88%, P = 10-5) and stage IV NSCLC patient cfDNA (99 vs 93%, P = 10-11), while not affecting sensitivity in commercial reference DNA (70 vs 68% P = 0.77) or patient cfDNA (82 vs 88%, P = 0.13). Overall accuracy in patient samples was improved (98 vs 92%, P = 10-7).

Correction of PIFs and application of an adaptive LoB increases specificity without a loss of sensitivity in ddPCR, leading to a higher accuracy in a real-life cohort of patients with stage IV NSCLC.

Intermittent fasting is a popular dietary intervention with perceived relatively easy compliance and is linked to various health benefits, including weight loss and improvement in blood glucose concentrations. The mechanistic explanations underlying the beneficial effects of intermittent fasting remain largely obscure but may involve alterations in the gut microbiota.

We sought to establish the effects of 1 mo of intermittent fasting on the gut microbiome.

We took advantage of intermittent fasting being voluntarily observed during the Islamic faith-associated Ramadan and sampled feces and blood, as well as collected longitudinal physiologic data in 2 cohorts, sampled in 2 different years. The fecal microbiome was determined by 16S sequencing. Results were contrasted to age- and body weight-matched controls and correlated to physiologic parameters (e.g., body mass and calorie intake).

We observed that Ramadan-associated intermittent fasting increased microbiome diversity and was specifically associatedsubstantial remodeling of the gut microbiome. The intermittent fasting-provoked upregulation of butyric acid-producing Lachnospiraceae provides an obvious possible mechanistic explanation for health effects associated with intermittent fasting.Hemifacial spasm is typically caused by vascular compression of the proximal intracranial facial nerve. Although the prevalence of neurovascular compression has been investigated in a cohort of patients with classical trigeminal neuralgia, the prevalence and severity of neurovascular compression has not been well characterized in patients with hemifacial spasm. We aimed to investigate whether presence and severity of neurovascular compression are correlated to the symptomatic side in patients with hemifacial spasm. All patients in our study were evaluated by a physician who specializes in the management of cranial nerve disorders. Once hemifacial spasm was diagnosed on physical exam, the patient underwent a dedicated cranial nerve protocol magnetic resonance imaging study on a 3 T scanner. Exams were retrospectively reviewed by a neuroradiologist blinded to the symptomatic side. The presence, severity, vessel type, and location of neurovascular compression along the facial nerve was recorded. Neurovascular coof the facial nerve is highly associated with the symptomatic side in hemifacial spasm.

To review differences in alcohol- and cannabis-related motives and consequences among National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes as a function of athlete characteristics (e.g. gender and competition season status).

Procedures followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. PubMed, PsycINFO and manual reference list review were used to identify studies that reported alcohol- or cannabis-related motives and consequences among NCAA athletes as a function of gender, race, season status, division level or sport-type through December 2019. Relevant findings and any reported psychosocial correlates were extracted by two independent reviewers.

The majority of studies (K=15) focused on alcohol-related motives or consequences, with one examining cannabis-related motives, and no studies examined cannabis-related consequences. Social drinking motives were strongest among men and White NCAA athletes, and athlete-specific motives were most salient for.g., gender). This review highlights the gaps in the literature and suggests future research directions to identify the risk and protective factors for substance use among NCAA athletes.

Essential genes are critical for the growth and survival of any organism. The machine learning approach complements the experimental methods to minimize the resources required for essentiality assays. Previous studies revealed the need to discover relevant features that significantly classify essential genes, improve on the generalizability of prediction models across organisms, and construct a robust gold standard as the class label for the train data to enhance prediction. Findings also show that a significant limitation of the machine learning approach is predicting conditionally essential genes. The essentiality status of a gene can change due to a specific condition of the organism. This review examines various methods applied to essential gene prediction task, their strengths, limitations and the factors responsible for effective computational prediction of essential genes. We discussed categories of features and how they contribute to the classification performance of essentiality prediction models. Five categories of features, namely, gene sequence, protein sequence, network topology, homology and gene ontology-based features, were generated for Caenorhabditis elegans to perform a comparative analysis of their essentiality prediction capacity.
