Acute brain injury (ABI) is a broad concept mainly comprised of sudden parenchymal brain injury. Acute brain injury outcomes are dependent not only on the severity of the primary injury, but the delayed secondary injury that subsequently follows as well. These are both taken into consideration when determining the patient's prognosis. Growing clinical and experimental evidence demonstrates that "preconditioning," a prophylactic approach in which the brain is exposed to various pre-injury stressors, can induce varying degrees of "tolerance" against the impact of the ABI by modulating neuroinflammation. Each protein has been implicated in maintaining proper mitochondrial function, which is particularly important for neuronal health. Aberrant post-translational modifications of these proteins may disrupt their cellular functions and thus contributing to the development of idiopathic PD. Transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy is the gold standard in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Major and minor complications may develop at varying rates after prostate biopsies, one of which is voiding impairment. This study aimed to evaluate whether all alpha1-blockers were effective in preventing voiding impairment after a transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy and if so, was one superior to the others.

This study included 240 patients who underwent a transrectal ultrasound-guided 12-core prostate biopsy and were prospectively randomized. Of the patients, 40 received 10 mg alfuzosin, 40 received 4 mg doxazosin, 40 received 8 mg silodosin, 40 received 0.4 mg tamsulosin, and 40 received 5 mg terazosin beginning on the day before the biopsy and for the following 30 days. The international prostate symptom score (IPSS), maximal flow rate, and post-void residual urine were recorded in all the patients before the procedure and on post-biopsy days 7 and 30. All he patients were followed up and questioned about voiding difficulty and acute urinary retention after the procedure.

In all the alpha1-blocker groups, the IPSS and post-void residuals were statistically significantly lower, and the maximal flow rate was statistically significantly greater on post-biopsy days 7 and 30 compared with the baseline values (p<0.05). This pilot study aimed to objectively assess the osteoporotic effect caused by androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in patients with prostate cancer and compare this effect in surgical versus medical castration, specifically with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) antagonists.

The study included 60 patients with metastatic prostate adenocarcinoma treated with either bilateral orchidectomy (group I) or LHRH antagonist (Degarelix) injection (group II). The patients had a baseline bone mineral density (BMD) assessment before the start of ADT using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan and then follow-up assessment after 6 months. BMD was measured at the spine (lumbar vertebrae L2-L4), femur (total), and forearm (one-third radius).

Group I included 33 patients and group II 27 patients. Both the groups showed significant reduction in BMD at the spine and femur after 6 months, whereas the forearm did not show a significant reduction. Spine BMD showed 5.9%±2.6% and 4.7%±2.6% reduction whereas the femur BMD showed 6%±7.4% and 6%±4.7% reduction in the orchiectomy and the Degarelix groups, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups at the 3 measured sites.

The albumin to globulin ratio (AGR) has been demonstrated to be associated with survival outcomes in various tumor types. However, the prognostic value of AGR in patients with metastatic renal carcinoma (mRCC) remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of AGR values in predicting overall survival (OS) of patients with mRCC treated with targeted therapy.

A total of 163 patients with mRCC treated with targeted therapy between 2008 and 2019 were enrolled. The AGR value was measured as AGR albumin/(total protein-albumin). The Kaplan-Meier method with long-rank testing and Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate the correlation of AGR with OS.

The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that the optimal cut-off value of AGR in predicting OS was 1.11 with a sensitivity of 37.25% and specificity of 85.25% (area under curve, 0.62; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54-0.69; p=0.005). OS was significantly higher in patients with AGR>1.11 than in those with AGR≤1.
