While the understanding of the neurofunctional organization of this uniquely human skill has advanced significantly, it does not take into consideration the common bilingual experiences around the world. To examine the role of early bilingualism on the neural substrates supporting English word processing, we compared brain activity, as well as functional connectivity, in Spanish-English early bilingual adults (N = 25) and English monolingual adults (N = 33) during single-word processing. Activation analysis revealed no significant differences between the two groups. A seed-to-voxel analysis using eight a priori selected seed-regions (placed in regions known to be involved in reading) revealed relatively stronger functional connectivity in bilinguals between two sets of regions left superior temporal gyrus seed positively with left lingual gyrus and left middle frontal gyrus seed negatively with left anterior cingulate cortex. Together these results suggest that an early Spanish-English bilingual experience does not modulate local brain activity for English word reading. It does, however, have some influence on the functional intercommunication between brain regions during reading, specifically in two regions associated with reading, which are functionally connected to those inside and outside of the reading network. We conclude that brain regions involved in processing English words are not that different in Spanish-English early bilingual adults relative to monolingual adult users of English.Much research has documented rate matching in concurrent variable-interval schedules, but comparatively little research has examined performance in concurrent variable-ratio schedules, except in discrete-trials procedures that sometimes produce probability matching. One should expect that the two types of schedule would result in different performances, because ratio schedules cannot improve with time the way interval schedules do; ratio schedules lack the temporal dynamics of interval schedules. The present experiment exposed rats to concurrent variable-ratio schedules. Seven unsignaled components were presented in random order within each daily session, with probability ratios ranging from 18 to 81. Three conditions were studied that varied the overall probability of food while leaving probability ratios the same. Choice appeared to conform to probability matching, because sensitivities in the rate-matching relation were close to 0.5, whereas sensitivities to probability ratio were close to 1.0. The sensitivities alone, however, could not confirm probability matching, because undermatching to rate occurs often. Analyses at smaller time scales supported the interpretation of probability matching. In particular, control by food deliveries was highly local in concurrent variable-ratio schedules, in contrast with concurrent variable-interval schedules, in which control is extended. Activity continued to switch between alternatives throughout components, contradicting optimal sampling theory.Chemotherapy in combination with mogamulizumab (Mog) was approved in Japan in 2014 for untreated aggressive adult T-cell leukaemia-lymphoma (ATL), but the survival benefit remains unclear. Therefore, we retrospectively analysed clinical outcomes in 39 transplant-ineligible patients with untreated aggressive ATL at Kumamoto University Hospital between 2010 and 2021. An interesting psychological question is how people perceive the carbon footprint of these buildings given their spatial distributions in a given community. Here we examine whether regular distribution (i.e., buildings organized in a block) or irregular distribution (i.e., buildings randomly distributed) influences people's perception of the carbon footprint of the communities. We first replicated the negative footprint illusion, the tendency to estimate a lower carbon footprint of a combined group of environmentally certified green buildings and ordinary conventional buildings, than the carbon footprint of the conventional buildings alone. Methadone for opioid use disorder (OUD) treatment is restricted to licensed opioid treatment programs (OTPs) with substantial barriers to entry. Underutilized regulations allow non-OTP providers to administer methadone for opioid withdrawal for up to 72h while arranging ongoing care. Our low-barrier bridge clinic implemented a new pathway to treat opioid withdrawal and facilitate OTP linkage utilizing the "72-hour rule."

Patients presenting to a hospital-based bridge clinic were evaluated for OUD, opioid withdrawal, and treatment goals. Eligible patients were offered methadone opioid withdrawal management with rapid OTP referral. OTPs accepted patients as direct admissions. We described bridge clinic patients who received at least one dose of methadone between March-August 2021 and key clinical outcomes including OTP referral completion within 72h. For the subset of patients referred to our two primary OTP partners, we described OTP linkage (i.e., attended at least one OTP visit within one month) and OTP retention at one month.

Methadone was administered during 150 episodes of care for 142 unique patients, the majority of whom were male (73%), white (67%), and used fentanyl (85%). In 92% of episodes (138/150), a plan for ongoing care was in place within 72h. Among 121 referrals to two primary OTP partners, 87% (105/121) linked and 58% (70/121) were retained at one month.

This model has the potential to improve methadone access.Uracil-DNA glycosylase (UDG) initiates base excision repair (BER) by removing damaged or modified nucleobases during DNA repair or mammalian demethylation. The UDG superfamily consists of at least six families with a variety of catalytic specificities and functions. Deinococcus radiodurans, an extreme radiation resistant bacterium, contains multiple members of UDG enzymes within its genome. The present study reveals that the putative protein, DR0022, is a uracil-DNA glycosylase that requires acidic conditions for its glycosylase activity, which is the first case of such an enzyme within the UDG superfamily. The key residues in the catalytic motifs are investigated by biochemical, enzyme kinetics, and de novo structural prediction, as well as molecular modeling analyses. The structural and catalytic roles of several distinct residues are discussed in light of predicted and modeled DR0022 glycosylase structures. The spontaneous mutation rate analysis performed in a dr0022 deficient D. radiodurans strain indicated that the dr0022 gene plays a role in mutation prevention. Furthermore, survival rate analysis in a dr0022 deficient D. radiodurans strain demonstrated its role in stress resistance, including γ-irradiation. Additionally, the novel acid UDG activity in relationship to its in vivo roles is discussed. This work underscores the functional diversity in the UDG superfamily.The dengue virus nonstructural protein 1 (NS1) is a secreted virulence factor that modulates complement, activates immune cells and alters endothelial barriers. The molecular basis of these events remains incompletely understood. Here we describe a functional high affinity complex formed between NS1 and human high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Collapse of the soluble NS1 hexamer upon binding to the lipoprotein particle leads to the anchoring of amphipathic NS1 dimeric subunits into the HDL outer layer. The stable complex can be visualized by electron microscopy as a spherical HDL with rod-shaped NS1 dimers protruding from the surface. We further show that the assembly of NS1-HDL complexes triggers the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in human primary macrophages while NS1 or HDL alone do not. Finally, we detect NS1 in complex with HDL and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles in the plasma of hospitalized dengue patients and observe NS1-apolipoprotein E-positive complexes accumulating overtime. The functional reprogramming of endogenous lipoprotein particles by NS1 as a means to exacerbate systemic inflammation during viral infection provides a new paradigm in dengue pathogenesis.
