This study was performed to obtain normative data of the distal femoral cartilage thickness in healthy adults by ultrasound.

This cross-sectional study included 72 healthy adults. The demographic characteristics of the participants were recorded, and the thickness of the femoral articular cartilage was measured using a 5- to 18-MHz linear probe.

Significant statistical difference towards the male side at left medial condyle (P = 0.001) and left lateral condyle (P = 0.009). Weakly positive statistical difference was noted towards the male side at right medial condyle (P = 0.06) and right lateral condyle (P = 0.07). The femoral cartilage thickness in the study participants did not correlate with weight, body mass index, and age (P >0.05). Positive statistical correlation with height noted in right medial condyle, right lateral condyle, right intercondylar area, and left medial condyle.

This study increases the pool of normative data of femoral cartilage thickness measurements. Additionally, the findings of this study emphasize the fact that women have thinner cartilage than men in four of the studied parameters.

Materials & methods Retrospective, multicenter study assessing the safety of AIT in patients aged 5 to 65 years with AR, with or without asthma, sensitized to mites. Secondary objective was effectiveness, measured as unscheduled visits to healthcare centers and emergency rooms, rhinitis and asthma evolution, medication use and patients' and physicians' disease perception 12 months before and after treatment. Results The 306 patients evaluated, with a mean (standard deviation) age of 29.68 (14.66) years, received different treatment compositions and regimens, and 25 (8.2%) experienced nonserious adverse reactions. Unscheduled visits to the specialist and emergency room admissions significantly decreased after immunotherapy (mean [standard deviation] 2.11 [1.95] and 0.3 [0.93] vs 0.66 [1.09] and 0.02 [0.2], before and after treatment, respectively). Rhinitis and asthma classification ('AR and its impact on asthma' and 'Guía Española para el Manejo del Asma', respectively) significantly changed (p less then 0.0001 for all classifications), showing symptom reduction after AIT. Median (interquartile range)-combined rhinitis and combined asthma medication scores significantly decreased (4.0 [1.33, 7.0] vs 0.25 [0, 10.0]; p less then 0.0001 and 6.94 [1.5, 6.0] vs 0.67 [0, 4.67]; p less then 0.0001) within 12 months before and after starting AIT, respectively. Conclusion AIT with microcrystalline tyrosine-associated mite allergoid appears to be safe and effective in treating rhinitis caused by mites.Lacrimal drainage apparatus melanoma is a rare entity that may arise primarily or, more commonly, as secondary involvement from melanoma originating elsewhere. Conjunctival melanoma may involve the lacrimal drainage apparatus (LDA) via spread along the canalicular epithelium, separate in situ processes, or direct invasion. Only seven cases exist in the literature where conjunctival melanoma remotely recurred in the LDA. We report three additional patients, two with invasive conjunctival melanoma and one with primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with severe atypia/melanoma in situ, who developed LDA melanoma at 5, 8, and 16 years after initial treatment of conjunctival melanoma. This report confirms the ability of conjunctival melanoma to give rise to spatially and temporally remote LDA melanoma despite adequate local treatment, and reviews the proposed mechanisms and associated characteristics of LDA recurrence in conjunctival melanoma.

Malignant eyelid tumours are the most common malignancies in ophthalmic practice. We report here the incidence of non-melanoma eyelid malignancies in Bulgaria, for the period 2000-2015.

All cases coded with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) code C 44.1, received from the Bulgarian National Cancer Registry, were used for estimating crude incidence rates by age and sex. In addition, directly age standardized incidence rates for non-melanoma eyelid malignancies are presented based on the European Standard population (year 2013) for Bulgaria and the region of Varna.

Over the 16-year period there were 3,046 cases in total, of which 1,457 (47.8%) were among men. The age standardized rate (ASR) of non-melanoma eyelid malignancies in men was 2.9 per 100,000 (95% CI 2.79-3.11), in women it was 2.4 per 100,000 (95% CI 2.30-2.54), and the mean ASR was 2.6 per 100,000 (95% CI 2.53-2.73) for both sexes during the period. The ASR increased for women and for both sexes combined. The risk of eyelid malignancies was higher for men than for women with RR of 1.21 (95% CI 1.08-1.41) during the whole period. The risk was higher in women up to the age of 55 and over 55years it was higher in men.

We report results for the incidence of eyelid non-melanoma malignancies in a south-eastern European country, Bulgaria. #link# They are comparable with earlier reports from other European countries.

Several lines of evidence have pointed to a protective role of natural antibodies in chronic diseases like atherosclerosis and cancer. Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1 (VEGFR1) and VEGFR2 are important regulators of angiogenesis and may be involved in the development of atherosclerosis. link2 In this retrospective study, we developed an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to assess whether natural IgG levels against VEGFR1 and the regulatory T cell markers CD25 and FOXP3 were associated with atherosclerosis.

A total of 218 patients with atherosclerosis and 200 healthy controls were enrolled. All patients had atherosclerotic carotid plaques. Carotid intima-media thickness was analyzed using a diagnostic ultrasound system.

Plasma anti-VEGFR1 IgG levels were significantly lower in patients with atherosclerosis than control subjects. Decreased anti-VEGFR1 IgG levels were more obvious in male patients. Spearman correlation analysis showed no significant correlation between natural IgG levels and carotid intima-media thickness.

Decreased levels of anti-VEGFR1 IgG may be involved in development of atherosclerosis and related conditions.

Illicit drug use is common in nightlife settings and associated with various public health-related problems, making this an important arena for prevention.

To assess perceived prevalence of illicit drug use in the Stockholm nightlife setting, use of and attitudes toward illicit drugs among employees at licensed premises. Also, to make comparisons with two identical measurements from 2001 and 2007/08, and to explore potential differences related to own drug use, type of licensed premise, age or gender.

Cross-sectional surveys were conducted at three time-points 2001, 2007/08, and 2016/17, comprising employees at licensed premises in Stockholm participating in STAD's Responsible Beverage Service training program. A total of 665 persons (mean age 28 years, 53% women) were included in the 2016/2017 measurement.

A majority of the respondents reported having observed patrons intoxicated by illicit drugs in the last six months, and agreed that patrons intoxicated by illicit drugs should be asked to leave Almost half of the respondents in the youngest age group (18-24 years) reported illicit drug use during the last year. Conclusions/importance Observation and use of illicit drugs are common among employees in the Stockholm nightlife setting and has increased significantly during the past decade.

The

gene encodes the photoreceptor guanylate cyclase (GC-E) and different pathogenic variants can lead to Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA) or cone-rod dystrophy (CRD). In this study, we describe three unrelated families who carried different mutations at codon 838 of the

gene, and presented different phenotypes of retinal degeneration.

Family and personal histories were collected, and the patients underwent best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), fundus photography (FP), electroretinography (ERG), optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fundus autofluorescence (FAF). Venous blood was drawn from patients and family members, and genomic DNA was extracted. Next-generation sequencing of known ocular genes was applied to the proband to find pathogenic variants. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequencing were conducted for validation and segregation.

Six patients from three unrelated families were enrolled. All the patients manifested decreased vision, photophobia and myopia from childhood. ERG rdiversity. In sonodynamic therapy (SDT), when Chlorin e6 (Ce6) accumulates in tumor tissues, its anti-tumor effect can be achieved by ultrasound activation. To increase the local drug concentration of Ce6 in tumor cells, we had established a novel drug delivery system, Ce6-loaded sonosensitive magnetic nanoliposome (Ce6/SML), which realized the targeting delivery by the external magnetic field. It was worth mentioning that the targeting release of Ce6/SML and the activation on Ce6 could be achieved simultaneously by ultrasound of SDT. link3 In our study, after Ce6 was loaded into the sonosensitive magnetic nanoliposome (SML), the values of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in vitro and in vivo were determined, indicating the activation on Ce6 of ultrasound. BRM/BRG1 ATP Inhibitor-1 supplier displayed the tumor-targeting ability and anti-tumor activity, which associated with the determined tumor growth and expression levels of angiogenin (ANG), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α). In conclusion, the Ce6/SML-SDT-Targeted delivery system could effectively enhance the anti-tumor activity of SDT and had a great potential application for the treatment of malignant tumors located in deep tissues.MiR-17-92 cluster enriched exosomes derived from multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) increase functional recovery after stroke. Here, we investigate the mechanisms underlying this recovery. At 24 h (h) post transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, rats received control liposomes or exosomes derived from MSCs infected with pre-miR-17-92 expression lentivirus (Exo-miR-17-92+) or control lentivirus (Exo-Con) intravenously. Compared to the liposomes, exosomes significantly reduced the intracortical microstimulation threshold current of the contralateral cortex for evoking impaired forelimb movements (day 21), increased the neurite and myelin density in the ischemic boundary area, and contralesional axonal sprouting into the caudal forelimb area of ipsilateral side and in the denervated spinal cord (day 28), respectively. The Exo-miR-17-92+ further enhanced axon-myelin remodeling and electrophysiological recovery compared with the EXO-Con. Ex vivo cultured rat brain slice data showed that myelin and neuronal fiber density were significantly increased by Exo-miR-17-92+, while significantly inhibited by application of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway inhibitors.
