Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is characterized as brief episodes of vertigo that are exacerbated by the unexpected act of moving to a current provoking location. It is thought to be an otoconia-related balance disorder. Our objectives were to assess the serum concentrations of vitamin D and calcium (total and ionized) in cases with BPPV, determine if low vitamin D levels were regarded as a cause for BPPV relapse, and determine whether vitamin D supplementation would minimize the risk of BPPV relapse.

Sixty cases with BPPV were included in the study; 53 cases had posterior canal BPPV, while seven had lateral canal BPPV. TKI-258 in vitro Canalithiasis was the most common type of BPPV pathology. Forty cases had abnormally low levels of vitamin D. There was a statistically significant positive correlation between the mean vitamin D assay for all cases with BPPV and serum calcium. There was statistically significant difference in comparing the relapse of BPPV for group that receive vitamin D after one year follow up.

Abnormal vitamin D levels were linked with the incident and relapse of BPPV. Correction of low vitamin D levels was linked with the reduction of the relapse of BPPV.

To evaluate the safety profile and surgical technique for removal of symptomatic exostoses and osteoma of the external auditory canal with a micro-oscillating piezoelectric device.

A chart review was conducted on patients undergoing piezoelectric canalplasty between 2019 and 2021 at tertiary referral hospital. Surgery was performed by two surgeons with varying experience. Bone removal was achieved using both osteotomy and osteoplasty. Postoperative complications, operative time and hearing outcome were evaluated.

The study comprised 16 patients (16 ears). No major complications occurred. The skin of the auditory canal was completely preserved in all patients without injury to the tympanic membrane. Except for one patient with known noise-induced hearing loss, there was no postoperative deterioration of the bone-conduction threshold more than 10dB HL at any frequency. The difference of the bone-conduction threshold in pure-tone audiometry (average for 0.5, 1, 2 and 4kHz) three weeks postoperatively had a median of 0.6dB±5.7. One patient complained of temporary new tinnitus. One patient had prolonged wound healing. Mean operative time was comparable with literature data.

The atraumatic characteristics of the piezoelectric instrument enable low-risk removal of external auditory canal exostoses and osteoma. Through the combination of precise osteotomy and osteoplasty, this novel instrument has the potential to become established in routine canalplasty.

To characterize the relationship between dizziness severity and cognitive dysfunction in vestibular migraine (VM) patients.

Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI) and Cognitive Failures Questionnaire (CFQ) scores were compared pre- and post-treatment in a cohort of definite VM patients who underwent evaluation in a multidisciplinary clinic from 2016 to 2020.

44 patients were included. DHI reduction of 11.96 (SD 11.49) (p<0.001) from an initial mean of 58.36 (22.05) and CFQ reduction of 4.57 (12.20) (p=0.017) from an initial mean of 47.66 (19.12) were demonstrated. Both pre- and post-treatment DHI scores correlated with pre- and post-treatment CFQ scores (r=0.537, p<0.001 and r=0.667, p<0.001, respectively). Change in DHI score correlated with change in CFQ score (r=0.351, p=0.019).

Cognitive dysfunction in VM patients is correlated with dizziness severity. The DHI may fail to thoroughly assess cognitive dysfunction in VM patients. Additionally, multidisciplinary treatment of VM reduces both dizziness severity and cognitive dysfunction.

Performing tympanoplasty for tympanic perforations in children and adolescents is often considered to be less successful than in adults.

The aim of our study was to evaluate the surgical outcome of tympanoplasty type I in patients under 15years of age with chronic otitis media and to identify potential factors that influence the success rate.

The present study was based on a retrospective analysis of the medical records of all patients under the age of 15 who were treated for chronic otitis media by means of type I tympanoplasty between 2005 and 2020. The minimum follow-up period was 6months. The data were analyzed with regard to epidemiological parameters, tube-related pathologies in the contralateral ear, the local condition and the extent of the eardrum perforation as well as the extent of the surgical intervention (tympanoplasty type I with or without adenotomy).

83 cases were included in our study. The mean age at the time of the surgery was 8.9years. The mean follow-up time was 46months (6-182months). The anatomical closure rate was 88.0%. Children with "dry" tympanic perforations tended to perform better (p=0.052). The average improvement in the air bone gap was 2.0dB.

Detailed preoperative counseling about the advantages and disadvantages as well as the expected success rate of an early myringoplasty in this age group is just as important as an individualized approach for a high level of patient satisfaction.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how 8-isoprostanes, used as a marker of airway oxidative stress, were related to sinus disease and asthma.

We analyzed samples and data from two separate studies, one investigating sinonasal disease in asthma, the other investigating the effect of BMI on airway disease. We measured airway (nasal lavage) 8-isoprostanes and investigated the relationship with measures of sinus and asthma symptoms, asthma control and lung function.

The study of people with sinonasal disease and poorly controlled asthma included 48 obese, 31 overweight and 23 lean participants. In multivariate analysis, nasal lavage 8-isoprostane levels increased with increasing BMI (p<0.01), and were higher in Caucasian than African American participants (p=0.01). Sinus symptoms were inversely related to nasal 8-isoprostanes (p=0.02) independent of BMI and Race. In the study investigating the effect of BMI on airway disease, we enrolled 13 controls with obesity and 21 people with obesity and asthma 8-isoprostane levels were higher in obese controls than in obese people with asthma (p<0.
