Conclusion The use of MI-OCT in ophthalmic surgery is becoming increasingly prevalent and has been applied in almost all procedures. However, there are still limitations to be overcome and the technology involved remains difficult to access and use.The nephrotoxicity of aristolochic acids (AAs), p-cresyl sulfate (PCS) and indoxyl sulfate (IS) were well-documented, culminating in tubulointerstitial fibrosis (TIF), advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD) and fatal urothelial cancer. Nonetheless, information regarding the attenuation of AAs-induced nephropathy (AAN) and uremic toxin retention is scarce. Propolis is a versatile natural product, exerting anti-oxidant, anti-cancer and anti-fibrotic properties. We aimed to evaluate nephroprotective effects of propolis extract (PE) in a murine model. AAN was developed to retain circulating PCS and IS using C57BL/6 mice, mimicking human CKD. The kidney sizes/masses, renal function indicators, plasma concentrations of PCS/IS, tissue expressions of TIF, α-SMA, collagen IaI, collagen IV and signaling pathways in transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) family were analyzed among the control, PE, AAN, and AAN-PE groups. PE ameliorated AAN-induced renal atrophy, renal function deterioration, TIF, plasma retention of PCS and IS. PE also suppressed α-SMA expression and deposition of collagen IaI and IV in the fibrotic epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Notably, PE treatment in AAN model inhibited not only SMAD 2/3-dependent pathways but also SMAD-independent JNK/ERK activation in the signaling cascades of TGF-β family. Through disrupting fibrotic epithelial-mesenchymal transition and TGF-β signaling transduction pathways, PE improves TIF and thereby facilitates renal excretion of PCS and IS in AAN. In light of multi-faced toxicity of AAs, PE may be capable of developing a new potential drug to treat CKD patients exposed to AAs.Mercury is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant of dominantly anthropogenic origin. A critical concern for human health is the introduction of mercury to the food chain; therefore, monitoring of mercury levels in agricultural soil is essential. Unfortunately, the total mercury content is not sufficiently informative as mercury can be present in different forms with variable bioavailability. Since 1990, the use of bioreporters has been investigated for assessment of the bioavailability of pollutants; however, real contaminated soils have rarely been used in these studies. In this work, a bioassay with whole-cell bacterial bioreporter Escherichia coli ARL1 was used for estimation of bioavailable concentration of mercury in 11 soil samples. Among them, laccase mediated extraction was found to be the most suitable over water extraction, alkaline extraction, and direct use of water-soil suspensions. In order to elucidate the matrix role, influences of humic acid and selected metal ions present in soil on the bioreporter signal were tested separately in laboratory solutions. Comparative contact toxicity of S. intermedia essential oil was measured against Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe (oleander aphid) and its predator Coccinella septempunctata L. (seven-spot ladybird). Similarly, patients with moderate-to-advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) often have cognitive dysfunction. Here, we investigated the association between hand fine motor skill and cognitive dysfunction in patients with moderate-to-advanced PD. Moderate and advanced PD patients with and without dementia were identified from the Taiwan Data Bank of Persons with Disability. Hand fine motor capacities, namely pen holding, buttoning, and knotting, were assessed with the World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0. Statistical analyses were performed on Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and a p value of less then 0.05 was considered significant. In total, 3440 patients with PD were enrolled, of which 612 had dementia, exhibiting significant disability in all three tasks. After adjustments for age, sex, and PD severity, pen holding and knotting were significantly associated with PD dementia. The presence of any disability in either task was not only sensitive to the presence of dementia but also associated with cognitive disability in moderate and advanced PD patients without dementia. In conclusion, hand fine motor skill disability was associated with cognitive disability in patients with moderate-to-advanced PD. These simple hand fine motor skills may thus be applicable in screening tests for the early identification of cognitive dysfunction in patients with moderate-to-advanced PD.We compared the detection rate (DR) for sentinel lymph nodes (SLN), the number of SLNs and the subjects with additional SLNs of single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT/CT) and planar lymphoscintigraphy (PL) in patients with melanoma. Furthermore, we evaluated the impact of SPECT/CT on surgical plans. Articles containing head-to-head comparisons between SPECT/CT and PL were searched in Pubmed/MEDLINE and Scopus. The literature search was updated until December 31st, 2019. DR was calculated on a per patient-based analysis; the studies were pooled by their odds ratios (ORs) with a random effects model to assess the significance of difference (p less then 0.05). The number of additional SLNs (calculated as the relative risk) and pooled proportion of patients with additional SLNs were investigated. The pooled ratio of surgical procedures influenced by the SPECT/CT findings was calculated. Seventeen studies with 1438 patients were eligible for the calculation of DR of SPECT/CT and PL. The average DR was 98.28% (95% confidence interval (95% CI) 97.94-99.19%) for the SPECT/CT and 95.53% (95% CI 92.55-97.77%) for the PL; OR of 2.31 (95% CI 1.66-4.18, p less then 0.001) in favor of the SPECT/CT. There was a relative risk of a higher number of SLNs (1.13) for the SPECT/CT and 17.87% of patients with additional SLNs were detected by SPECT/CT. The average impact of SPECT/CT on surgery resulted in 37.43% of cases. This meta-analysis favored SPECT/CT over PL for the identification of SLNs in patients with melanoma due to a higher DR, reproducibility, number of SLNs depicted, proportion of patients with additional SLNs and the impact on the surgical plan. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Difensil Immuno (DI) on the recurrence of tonsillitis and fever in children. A multicentric randomized clinical trial was conducted. One-hundred and twenty children with chronic tonsillitis were randomly assigned to group A, B or control. Patients in group A were treated with 10 mL of DI for 90 consecutive days, patients in group B underwent treatment with 15 mL of DI for 45 consecutive days. The following data were collected at baseline (T0), T1 and T2 tonsillitis and fever episodes, tonsillar volume, blood test results. One-way ANOVA was used to analyze within and between variances. Patients in group A and B statistically improved their clinical parameters (episode of tonsillitis and fever, tonsillar volume) when compared to control group both at T1 and T2. However, T1 variances were more consistent in group A than in group B. All patients in the study groups improved their clinical outcomes. No statistically significant variances were observed in blood parameters both at T1 and T2. Our results suggest that children treated with DI had fewer episodes of tonsillitis and fever and a reduction in their tonsillar volume.The assessment of dissolved loadings and the sources of these elements in urban catchments' rivers is usually measured by punctual sampling or through high frequency sensors. Nevertheless, the combination of both methodologies has been less common even though the information they give is complementary. Major ion (Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl-, SO42-, and alkalinity), organic matter (expressed as Dissolved Organic Carbon, DOC), and nutrients (NO3-, and PO43-) are punctually measured in the Deba river urban catchment (538 km2), in the northern part of the Iberian Peninsula (draining to the Bay of Biscay). Discharge, precipitation, and Electrical Conductivity (EC) are registered with a high frequency (10 min) in three gauging stations. The combination of both methodologies has allowed the assessment of major geochemical processes and the extent of impact of anthropogenic input on major composition of riverine water, as well as its spatial and temporal evolution. Three methodologies for loading estimation have been assessed and the error committed in the temporal aggregation is quantified. Results have shown that, even though carbonates dominate the draining area, the water major ion chemistry is governed by an evaporitic spring in the upper part of the catchment, while anthropogenic input is specially noted downstream of three wastewater treatment plants, in all nutrients and organic matter. The results of the present work illustrate how the combination of two monitoring methodologies allows for a better assessment of the spatial and temporal evolution on the major water quality in an urban catchment.
