More research is required, particularly into the effects of adolescent stress on male and female littermates. We hope that a greater understanding of sex-specific susceptibilities in response to stress across development will help to uncover risk factors for psychological disorders in vulnerable populations.Imagine you see a video of someone pulling back their leg to kick a soccer ball, and then a soccer ball soaring toward a goal. You would likely infer that these scenes are two parts of the same event, and this inference would likely cause you to remember having seen the moment the person kicked the soccer ball, even if that information was never actually presented (Strickland & Keil, 2011, Cognition, 121[3], 409-415). What cues trigger people to "fill in" causal events from incomplete information? Is it due to the experience they have had with soccer balls being kicked toward goals? Is it the visual similarity of the object in both halves of the video? Or is it the mere spatiotemporal continuity of the event? In three experiments, we tested these different potential mechanisms underlying the "filling-in" effect. Experiment 1 showed that filling in occurs equally in familiar and unfamiliar contexts, indicating that familiarity with specific event schemas is unnecessary to trigger false memory. Experiment 2 showed that the visible continuation of a launched object's trajectory is all that is required to trigger filling in, regardless of other occurrences in the second half of the scene. Finally, Experiment 3 found that, using naturalistic videos, this filling-in effect is more heavily affected if the object's trajectory is discontinuous in space/time compared with if the object undergoes a noticeable transformation. Together, these findings indicate that the spontaneous formation of causal event representations is driven by object representation systems that prioritize spatiotemporal information over other object features.When facing two sets of imprinting objects of different numerousness, domestic chicks prefer to approach the larger one. Given that choice for familiar and novel stimuli in imprinting situations is known to be affected by the sex of the animals, we investigated how male and female domestic chicks divide the time spent in the proximity of a familiar versus an unfamiliar number of objects, and how animals interact (by pecking) with these objects. We confirmed that chicks discriminate among the different numerousnesses, but we also showed that females and males behave differently, depending on the degree of familiarity of the objects. When objects in the testing sets were all familiar, females equally explored both sets and pecked at all objects individually. Males instead selectively approached the familiar numerousness and pecked more at it. When both testing sets comprised familiar as well as novel objects, both males and females approached the larger numerousness of familiar objects. However, chicks directed all their pecks toward the novel object within the set. Differences in the behavior of males and females can be accounted for in terms of sex difference in the motivation to reinstate social contact with the familiar objects and to explore novel ones, likely associated with the ecology and the social structure of the species before domestication.The "cotton boll weevil" (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) is a key pest in America whose larval stage develops within the cotton flower bud. During its development, the larva uses the flower bud as food and as a shelter from predators. This behavior limits the effective control through conventional insecticide applications and biocontrol techniques. Increasing genetic information from insects has allowed the development of new control technologies based on the use of RNA interference (RNAi) to design orally delivered double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) strategies. In this study, we evaluated the effect of continuous oral administration of six specific dsRNA in order to identify an effective target gene for RNAi-mediated control of cotton boll weevil. First, six selected A. grandis gene fragments were amplified and cloned to perform in vivo synthesis of the specific dsRNA, and subsequently, larvae and adults were fed with this dsRNA for 2 weeks. Larvae mortality ranged from 40 to 60% depending on the targeted gene sequence. Indeed, α-amylase and cytochrome p450 dsRNAs were the most effective. Oral administration in adults caused smaller but still significant death rates (15-30%). Thus, the results demonstrated RNAi responses depend on life stages and target genes. The dsRNA ingestion was capable of providing knockdown mRNA levels in cotton boll weevil midgut and this effect was significantly higher in the larval stage. In this study, we present a new report of silencing of midgut genes in A. grandis larva induced by continuously feeding with dsRNA.
