Nicotine is beneficial to mood, arousal and cognition in humans. Due to the importance of cognitive functioning for archery athletes, we investigated the effects of nicotine supplementation on the cognitive abilities, heart rate variability (HRV), and sport performance of professional archers.

Eleven college archers were recruited and given 2 mg of nicotine supplementation (NIC group) and placebo (PLA group) in a crossover design.

The results showed that at 30 min after the intake of nicotine gum, the "correct rejection" time in the NIC group was significantly lower than that of the PLA group (7.29 ± 0.87 vs. 8.23 ± 0.98 msec, p < 0.05). In addition, the NIC group completed the grooved pegboard test in a shorter time than the PLA group (48.76 ± 3.18 vs. 53.41 ± 4.05 s, p < 0.05), whereas motor reaction times were not different between the two groups. Saliva α-amylase activity was significantly lower after nicotine supplementation (p < 0.01) but increased immediately after the archery test in the NIC group (p < 0.05). In addition, nicotine supplementation significantly decreased HRV and increased the archery score (290.58 ± 10.09 vs. 298.05 ± 8.56, p < 0.01).

Mental health is an important aspect of the process of individual adaptation and development. The present study analysed the role played by resilience in mental health while taking into account both positive and negative indicators among juveniles. The aim of the first study (Study 1) is to analyse the relationship between resilience and the broadly understood mental health of juveniles admitted to youth education centres. Study 2 aimed to understand the direct and indirect role of resilience in shaping the mental health of juveniles. In the model we tested, we looked at the relationship among resilience, coping strategies, and mental well-being.

Muscle strength around the hip after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is crucial for preventing dislocation and limping. This study aimed to assess and compare muscle volume and degeneration after THA using the posterolateral (PL) and anterolateral (AL) approaches.

Sixty-four hips in 64 patients who underwent primary THA were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were segregated into the PL group (35 hips) and AL group (29 hips) for evaluating pre- and postoperative muscle volumes and degeneration around the hip. Computed tomography (CT) examinations were performed preoperatively and 6 months post THA. The muscle volume and Hounsfield units (HU) of the gluteus maximus (G-max), gluteus medius (G-med), tensor fasciae latae, internal obturator muscle, and external obturator muscle were measured.

In the PL group, the postoperative muscle volume of the G-max significantly increased than the preoperative muscle volume. In contrast, the postoperative muscle volume of the internal obturator muscle was significantly lower than the preoperative muscle volume. The postoperative HU of the internal and external obturator muscles were significantly lower than the preoperative HU. In the AL group, the postoperative muscle volumes of the G-max, G-med, and tensor fasciae latae significantly increased than their preoperative muscle volumes. The postoperative HU of the G-med and tensor fasciae latae were significantly higher than the preoperative HU values.

To investigate abnormalities of early folliculogenesis and Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients, and to analyze the association between AMH and early-stage follicle densities (FD).

A total of 175 patients underwent ovarian tissue cryopreservation in the first official cryobank in China, of which 16 patients aged 30-40 years old were diagnosed with endometrial cancer (all without initial chemo/radiotherapy), including 5 patients with concurrent PCOS and the other 11 patients without. We obtained standard cortical biopsies to measure FD using calcein staining. Blood samples were collected before cryopreservation to evaluate AMH concentrations.
