Interface strength, damage and fracture properties between ceramic films and metallic substrates affect the service reliability of related parts. The films' thickness, grain size and residual stress affect the interface properties and fracture behavior, thus related studies attract great attention. In this paper, the interface damage evolution and fracture behavior between ceramic films and metallic substrates were simulated by developing a three dimensional finite element model of alumina films on Ni substrates with cohesive elements in the interfaces. The interface fracture energy as a key parameter in the simulation was firstly determined based on its thermodynamic definition. The simulation results show the Mises stress distribution and damage evolution of the film/substrate structures during uniaxial tensile loading. Specially, when grain size of the films is in nanoscale, the interface strength increases obviously, agreeing with the previous experimental results. The effects of residual stress on interface properties was further simulated. The interface strength was found to decrease with increasing radial residual force and the axial residual pressure increases the interface strength. When the thickness of the films increases, the interface strength keeps a constant but the speed of interface damage becomes faster, that is, the thicker films show catastrophic fracture. The underlying mechanism of damage speed was analyzed. Understanding these size effects and the effects of residual stress is helpful to guide the design of related parts.A series of fluorinated 7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives containing an oxime ether moiety have been designed, synthesized and evaluated for their antifungal activity. All the target compounds were determined by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, FTIR and HR-MS spectra. The single-crystal structures of compounds 4e, 4h, 5h and 6c were further confirmed using X-ray diffraction. The antifungal activities against Botrytis cinerea (B. cinerea), Alternariasolani (A. solani), Gibberella zeae (G. zeae), Rhizoctorzia solani (R. solani), Colletotrichum orbiculare (C. orbiculare) and Alternaria alternata (A. alternata) were evaluated in vitro. Epigenetic inhibitor The preliminary bioassays showed that some of the designed compounds displayed the promising antifungal activities against the above tested fungi. Strikingly, the target compounds 5f and 6h exhibited outstanding antifungal activity against B. cinerea at 100 μg/mL, with the corresponding inhibition rates reached 90.1 and 85.0%, which were better than the positive control Osthole (83.6%) and Azoxystrobin (46.5%). The compound 5f was identified as the promising fungicide candidate against B. cinerea with the EC50 values of 5.75 μg/mL, which was obviously better than Osthole (33.20 μg/mL) and Azoxystrobin (64.95 μg/mL). Meanwhile, the compound 5f showed remarkable antifungal activities against R. solani with the EC50 values of 28.96 μg/mL, which was better than Osthole (67.18 μg/mL) and equivalent to Azoxystrobin (21.34 μg/mL). The results provide a significant foundation for the search of novel fluorinated 7-hydroxycoumarin derivatives with good antifungal activity.Enterobacterial common antigen (ECA) is a conserved antigen expressed by enterobacteria. It is built by trisaccharide repeating units →3)-α-D-Fucp4NAc-(1→4)-β-D-ManpNAcA-(1→4)-α-D-GlcpNAc-(1→ and occurs in three forms as surface-bound linear polysaccharides linked to a phosphoglyceride (ECAPG) or lipopolysaccharide - endotoxin (ECALPS), and cyclic form (ECACYC). ECA maintains, outer membrane integrity, immunogenicity, and viability of enterobacteria. A supernatant obtained after LPS ultracentrifugation was reported as a source for ECA isolation, but it has never been assessed for detailed composition besides ECACYC. We used mild acid hydrolysis and gel filtration, or zwitterionic-hydrophilic interaction liquid (ZIC®HILIC) chromatography combined with mass spectrometry for purification, fractionation, and structural analysis of rough Shigella sonnei and Escherichia coli R1 and K12 crude LPS preparations. Presented work is the first report concerning complex characteristic of all ECA forms present in LPS-derived supernatants. We demonstrated high heterogeneity of the supernatant-derived ECA that contaminate LPS purified by ultracentrifugation. Not only previously reported O-acetylated tetrameric, pentameric, and hexameric ECACYC have been identified, but also devoid of lipid moiety linear ECA built from 7 to 11 repeating units. Described results were common for all selected strains. The origin of linear ECA is discussed against the current knowledge about ECAPG and ECALPS.Accelerating wound healing with minimized bacterial infection has become a topic of interest in the development of the new generation of tissue bio-adhesives. In this study, we fabricated a hydrogel system (MGC-g-CD-ic-TCS) consisting of triclosan (TCS)-complexed beta-cyclodextrin (β-CD)-conjugated methacrylated glycol chitosan (MGC) as an antibacterial tissue adhesive. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed the inclusion complex formation between MGC-g-CD and TCS. The increase of storage modulus (G') of MGC-g-CD-ic-TCS after visible light irradiation for 200 s indicated its hydrogelation. The swollen hydrogel in aqueous solution resulted in two release behaviors of an initial burst and sustained release. Importantly, in vitro and in vivo results indicated that MGC-g-CD-ic-TCS inhibited bacterial infection and improved wound healing, suggesting its high potential application as an antibacterial tissue bio-adhesive.The application of thermoplastic composites (TPCs) in aircraft construction is growing. This paper presents a study of the effect of an applied methodology (standards) on out-of-plane interlaminar strength characterization. Additionally, the mechanical behaviour of three carbon fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites was compared using the curved beam strength test. Data evaluated using different standards gave statistically significantly different results. The study also showed that the relatively new polyaryletherketone (PAEK) composite had significantly better performance than the older and commonly used polyphenylensulfid (PPS) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK). link2 Furthermore, considering the lower processing temperature of PAEK than PEEK, the former material has good potential to be used in serial aerospace production.Starch films modified with additives are materials increasingly being used in the production of packaging. link3 These types of biopolymers can, to a considerable degree, replace plastic, contributing to the reduction in both production and waste management costs. However, they should be characterised by specific mechanical and surface parameters which determine their application. In the presented work, the PeakForce Quantitative Nanomechanics Mapping (PFQNM) method was applied to analyse a starch-based biopolymer modified with two different kaolin clay contents (5% and 10%). The technique used facilitates the assessment of the correlation of Atomic Force Microscope AFM height parameters with nanomechanical ones which provide the definitions of mutual interactions and allow the possibility to analyse materials in respect of various details. The investigated material was mapped in the Derjaguin-Muller-Toporov (DMT) modulus, adhesion and height domains. The results obtained indicated the impact of additives on the determined parameters. Increases in the DMT modulus and the adhesion force, along with the kaolin content, were observed. The enhancement of starch films with kaolin clay also induced growth in the surface roughness parameters.Diabetes increases the incidence rate of chronic renal disease. Pectin-lyase-modified ginseng (GS-E3D), with enhanced ginsenoside Rd content, has been newly developed. link= Epigenetic inhibitor In this study, renal protective roles of GS-E3D in type-2 diabetic db/db mice were investigated. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by high glucose (25 mM) was reduced by ES-E3D (75%) and ginsenoside Rd (60%). Diabetic db/db mice received 100 or 250 mg/kg/day of GS-E3D daily via oral gavage for 6 weeks. Albuminuria and urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OhdG, an oxidative stress marker) levels were increased in db/db mice and the levels recovered after GS-E3D treatment. In renal tissues, TUNEL-positive cells were decreased after GS-E3D treatment, and the increased apoptosis-related protein expressions were restored after GS-E3D treatment. link2 Therefore, GS-E3D has a potent protective role in diabetes-induced renal dysfunction through antioxidative and antiapoptotic activities. These results may help patients to select a dietary supplement for diabetes when experiencing renal dysfunction. One significant characteristic of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic inflammatory demyelinating disease of the central nervous system, is the evolution of highly variable patterns of white matter lesions. Based on geostatistical metrics, the MS-Lesion Pattern Discrimination Plot reduces complex three- and four-dimensional configurations of MS-White Matter Lesions to a well-arranged and standardized two-dimensional plot that facilitates follow-up, cross-sectional and medication impact analysis. Here, we present a script that generates the MS-Lesion Pattern Discrimination Plot, using the widespread statistical computing environment R. Input data to the script are Nifti-1 or Analyze-7.5 files with individual MS-White Matter Lesion masks in Montreal Normal Brain geometry. The MS-Lesion Pattern Discrimination Plot, variogram plots and associated fitting statistics are output to the R console and exported to standard graphics and text files. Besides reviewing relevant geostatistical basics and commenting on implementation details for smooth customization and extension, the paper guides through generating MS-Lesion Pattern Discrimination Plots using publicly available synthetic MS-Lesion patterns. link3 The paper is accompanied by the R script LDPgenerator.r, a small sample data set and associated graphics for comparison. To date, no fused heterocycles have been formed on folic acid molecules; for this reason, and others, our target is to synthesize new derivatives of folic acid as isolated or fused systems. Folic acid 1 reacted with ethyl pyruvate, triethyl orthoformate, ethyl chloroformate, thioformic acid hydrazide, and aldehydes to give new derivatives of folic acid 2-6a,b. Moreover, It reacted with benzylidene malononitrile, acetylacetone, ninhydrin, ethyl acetoacetate, ethyl cyanoacetate, and ethyl chloroacetate to give the pteridine fused systems 10-15, respectively. Ethoxycarbonylamino derivate 5 reacted with some nucleophiles containing the NH2 group, such as aminoguanidinium hydrocarbonate, hydrazine hydrate, glycine, thioformic acid hydrazide, and sulfa drugs in different conditions to give the urea derivatives 16-20a,b. Compound 4 reacted with the same nucleophiles to give the methylidene amino derivatives 21-24a,b. The fused compound 10 reacted with thioglycolic acid carbon disulfide, malononitrile, and formamide to give the four cyclic fused systems 25-30, respectively. Epigenetic inhibitor The biological activity of some synthesized showed moderate effect against bacteria, but no effect shown towards fungi.
