To investigate the prevalence of skin disorders in a highly PCB polluted area in northern Italy, with locally produced food as the main source of human contamination, and evaluate the association between skin lesions and PCB serum levels, taking account of possible confounders.

Thirty-three PCB congeners were quantitatively assessed and a total of 189 subjects were equally divided into three groups using the tertiles of total PCB serum concentrations. All subjects underwent a clinical examination and were interviewed on their risk factors and history of skin diseases.

No statistically significant difference was found in the prevalence of skin cancer, nevi, pigmentary disorders as well as inflammatory and infectious skin diseases among the three PCB exposure groups. The upper follicular compartment, a well-known reservoir of cutaneous microbiota, constitutes a space for intensive cross-barrier dialogue. The lower follicle comprises the bulb and bulge, structures with relative immune-privileged status, crucial for physiological cycling, and widely considered to be microbial-free.

Following our initial immunohistochemical screening for regulatory cytokines and defensin expression in anagen hair follicles, we aimed to confirm our results with a follow-up ELISA investigation. The incidence of both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSC) is increasing worldwide and these tumours have become an important health issue. Topical and systemic photoprotection are the cornerstone to decrease the incidence of these tumours.

The aim of this study was to collect information about the knowledge of patients with a history of NMSC or melanoma regarding systemic photoprotection.

This study was based on a multicentre survey. Standardized, self-administered questionnaires were collected from September 2019 to December 2019 in NMSC and melanoma units, as well as the general dermatology outpatient clinic for the control group.

A total of 375 patients were enrolled in two Italian centres. The level of knowledge regarding systemic photoprotection was relatively scarce and was greater in female patients; patients with normal weight and lighter hair, eye color and skin phototype; patients with a higher educational level; patients with non-cancerous skin conditions; and those who used sunscreens more frequently.

In this study, we investigated the clinical significance of the microbiota in extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD).

Patients with EMPD, treated between March 2007 and September 2019 at Kumamoto University Hospital, were investigated retrospectively. Inclusion criteria included histological diagnosis of EMPD, inspection of the bacterial culture of the cancer lesion using swab sampling, and availability of sufficient tissue in paraffin blocks for immunohistochemistry. For the latter, primary antibodies against IL-17, CD163 and ionized calcium-binding adapter molecule 1 (Iba1) were used.

Bacterial cultures of the cancer lesion revealed that Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was highly prevalent in EMPD patients, with dermal invasion or lymph node metastasis, compared to patients without these findings. Furthermore, the number of IL-17-positive cells and CD163-positive M2-like macrophages (pro-tumour macrophages) were increased in EMPD tissues with S. link2 aureus. Moreover, the number of IL-17-producing cells in EMPD tissues positively correlated with the accumulation of CD163-positive M2-like macrophages. In addition, the percentage of CD163-positive cells within Iba-1-positive macrophages (total macrophages) was also significantly elevated in EMPD tissues with S. aureus.

Here, we investigated the effect of left- and right-sided transcutaneous auricular VNS (taVNS) v. a sham control condition on mood after the exertion of physical and cognitive effort in 82 healthy participants (randomized cross-over design) using linear mixed-effects and hierarchical Bayesian analyses of mood ratings.
