The aim of this study was to assess the extent of thyroid function control among pregnant women who had previously undergone a therapeutic thyroidectomy.

Retrospective cohort study.

The largest health maintenance organization in Israel.

All female patients who were pregnant between May, 2001 and September, 2012 and had a medical history of thyroid surgery.

The thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels throughout the pregnancy were compared to recommended trimestral values. A multivariate analysis was performed to determine risk factors for not attaining TSH recommended range.

A total of 477 females with a history of thyroid surgery had given 701 births during the study period. Forty-three percent (n = 203), had thyroidal malignancy. Nearly half of the women underwent total thyroidectomy (43.4%, n = 207). The women's TSH values were within the recommended range in only 60% (n = 350) of the pregnancies during the first trimester (0.1-2.5 mIU/L), in 61% (n = 335) during the second trimester (0.2-3 mIU/L), and in 70% (n = 338) during the third trimester (0.3-3 mIU/L). In multivariate analysis, women that underwent a total thyroidectomy due to a benign thyroid disease, were at the highest risk for not attaining target TSH levels.

This very large cohort of pregnant women with a past history of thyroid surgery demonstrated a significant percentage of pregnancies with TSH values above the recommended range. Women that underwent a total thyroidectomy due to benign thyroid disease were at the highest risk for gestational hypothyroidism.

Catchments have provided great utility for understanding physical and social relationships within specific disciplines. Yet, catchments are rarely used across disciplines, such as its application to understand complex spatiotemporal dynamics between mobile human users and patchily distributed natural resources. We collected residence ZIP codes from 19,983 angler parties during 2014-2017 to construct seven angler-waterbody catchments in Nebraska, USA. We predicted that sizes of dense (10% utilization distribution) and dispersed (95% utilization distribution) angler-waterbody catchments would change across seasons and years as a function of diverse resource selection among mobile anglers. Contrary to expectations, we revealed that catchment size was invariant. We discuss how social (conservation actions) and ecological (low water quality, reduction in species diversity) conditions are expected to impact landscape patterns in resource use. We highlight how this simple concept and user-friendly technique can inform timely landscape-level conservation decisions within coupled social-ecological systems that are currently difficult to study and understand. The transpeptidase sortase A of Staphylococcus aureus (Sa-SrtA) is a valuable tool in protein chemistry. The native enzyme anchors surface proteins containing a highly conserved LPxTG sorting motif to a terminal glycine residue of the peptidoglycan layer in Gram-positive bacteria. This reaction is exploited for sortase-mediated ligation (SML), allowing the site-specific linkage of synthetic peptides and recombinant proteins by a native peptide bond. However, the moderate catalytic efficiency and specificity of Sa-SrtA fueled the development of new biocatalysts for SML, including the screening of sortase A variants form microorganisms other than S. aureus and the directed protein evolution of the Sa-SrtA enzyme itself. Novel display platforms and screening formats were developed to isolate sortases with altered properties from mutant libraries. This yielded sortases with strongly enhanced catalytic activity and enzymes recognizing new sorting motifs as substrates. This minireview focuses on recent advances in the field of directed sortase evolution and applications of these tailor-made enzymes in biochemistry.

To conduct a comparative study of retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness and choroidal thickness of psoriasis patients and healthy volunteers.

This study included 35 severe psoriasis patients, 35 mild psoriasis patients and 35 healthy individuals. RNFL and choroidal thickness analysis were performed by spectral field optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Only patients with psoriasis vulgaris who have not used systemic therapy for the last 3months were included in the study.

In the severe psoriasis group, the RSLT thickness was found to be statistically significantly thinner and the choroid thickness was thicker than the mild psoriasis and control group (P<.001). There was no significant difference in terms of RNLF and choroid thickness compared to mild psoriasis and the control group (P>.05). The correlation between length of the disease duration, RNFL and choroidal thickness was not significant (P>0,05).

The increase in choroidal thickness was found to be significant, while with respect to RNFL thickness, a decrease was evident, a possible indicator of damage to microvascular structures in the choroid and ganglion cells, especially in patients with severe psoriasis. Therefore, choroidal and RSLT thickness measurement with OCT device can assist in the detection of damage to psoriasis.

A remarkable decline in admissions for acute stroke and acute coronary syndrome (ACS) has been reported in countries severely hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. PARP inhibitor However, limited data are available from countries with less COVID-19 burden focusing on concurrent stroke and ACS hospitalisation rates from the same population.

The study was conducted in three geographically and demographically representative COVID-19 referral university hospitals in Greece. We recorded the rate of stroke and ACS hospital admissions during a 6-week period of the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020 and compared them with the rates of the corresponding period in 2019.

We found a greater relative reduction of stroke admissions (51% [35 vs. 71]; incidence rate ratio [IRR] 0.49, p=0.001) compared with ACS admissions (27% [123 vs. 168]; IRR 0.73, p=0.009) during the COVID-19 outbreak (p=0.097). Fewer older (>65years) patients (stroke 34.3% vs. 45.1%, odds ratio [OR] 0.64, p=0.291; ACS 39.8% vs. 54.2%, OR 0.56, p=0.016) were admitted during the COVID-19 compared with the control period.
