This study compares loneliness in deprived neighbourhood with that in the general population. It further examines whether social isolation and loneliness are associated with health-risk behaviours (including low intake of fruit or vegetables, daily smoking, high-risk alcohol intake, and physical inactivity and their co-occurrence) in deprived neighbourhoods, and whether social isolation and loneliness modify the associations between socioeconomic status and health-risk behaviours. Cross-sectional data from 5113 residents of 12 deprived neighbourhoods in Denmark were analysed using multiple logistic regression. Data on 14,686 individuals from the nationally representative Danish Health and Morbidity Survey 2010 were used as a comparison group with regard to loneliness. Cohabitation status, frequency of meeting with family and friends, participation in voluntary work were used as an indicator to measure social isolation. A question on feeling often unwillingly alone was used as an indicator to measure loneliness. Compared with the general population, residents of deprived neighbourhoods had higher odds of loneliness. Both social isolation and loneliness were significantly associated with higher odds of health-risk behaviour. When social isolation and loneliness were combined with low socioeconomic status, strong associations with health-risk behaviours were found. Elsubrutinib Social isolation and loneliness did not significantly modify the associations between socioeconomic status and health-risk behaviour. The findings in this study have important implications for the future planning of health promotion intervention programmes aimed to reduce health-risk behaviour in deprived neighbourhoods. © 2020 The Authors.Acculturation is a widely used concept in epidemiological research.•There are various ways to measure acculturation using proxies or scales; often an acculturation score is calculated.•Studies often show inconsistencies in operationalization and measurement of the concept of acculturation.•The exact outcome is often unclear; this creates a lack of comparability, generalizability and transferability of the results.•Health relevant proxies such as language skills or feeling of belonging should be measured without calculating a score. © 2020 The Authors. As the gender gap in medicine continues to close, female dermatologists are striving to balance the competing demands of career ambitions and family responsibilities. Despite gaining a new sense of autonomy and personal fulfillment, working women report feelings of guilt, frustration, and exhaustion as they struggle to be a good doctor, partner, mother, family member, and friend. The presence of children in the household and the asymmetrical division of labor have been reported as main stressors for women in dual-career families. Finding time for self-care and maintaining a robust support system are effective strategies to mitigate these challenges. In this study, we performed a literature review to evaluate the internal and external pressures among working women in dual-career families. In addition, we provide the personal commentary of Sara Samimi and Karolyn A. Wanat, two female dermatologists living in dual-career families, to gain further insight into the difficulties of balancing personal and professional responsibilities. © 2019 Published by Elsevier Inc. on behalf of Women's Dermatologic Society.Paragangliomas are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms derived from sympathetic or parasympathetic paraganglia and have the ability to secrete catecholamines. We present the case of a 37-year-old asymptomatic female who underwent right ovarian cystectomy for a mature cystic teratoma and was found to have an intra-tumoral paraganglioma. More research is needed to determine metastatic potential as well as the likelihood of recurrence of these unique neoplasms. © 2020 The Authors.Pemphigus is a group of autoimmune intraepidermal blistering diseases caused by immunoglobulins directed against keratinocyte cell surface components. In this case report, we identify a non-classical paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) foliaceous related to an undifferentiated uterine sarcoma. The patient is a 54-year-old Chinese female with a past medical history of arthritis who presented with worsening fatigue in November 2017 and an itchy, blistering, erythematous annular plaque that first appeared on her chest in February 2018. Given high suspicion for primary immunobullous disease despite negative immunofluorescence and lack of subepidermal split on initial biopsy, a repeat biopsy was performed from the right thigh showing positive intraepidermal "net-like" staining for C3 and IgG, but was negative for IgA, IgM, and fibrinogen. IgG antibodies against desmoglein 1 were elevated at 280u (reference range less then 18), but none resulted against desmoglein 3, consistent with pemphigus foliaceus. This patient's rcoma with no recurrence of the pemphigus lesions. © 2020 The Authors.Chronic Hepatitis C Viral (HCV) infection is a leading health problem worldwide and resulted in fibrotic scar formation, and finally liver-cirrhosis. Although contemporary therapies can partially reverse this destructive process, the rehabilitation is too slow and unsuitable for all chronic infections. The current study elucidates the mechanism of disease progression from early (F1) to moderate (F2, F3), and to severe fibrosis (F4)/cirrhosis in HCV genotype 3a infected patients to find out new candidates as potential disease progression markers and antiviral therapeutic agents. A total of 550 genes were found differentially regulated in the four fibrosis stages and grouped in 22 classes according to their biological functions. Gene set enrichment (GSEA) and Ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA) were used to identify the regulation of crucial biological functions and pathways involved in HCV progression. HCV differentially regulated the expression of genes involved in apoptosis, cell structure, signal transduction, proliferation, metabolism, cytokine signaling, immune response, cell adhesion and maintenance, and post translational modifications by pathway analysis.
