Objectives The Bringing Art to Life (BATL) program was created as an art therapy intervention to increase social engagement, intergenerational engagement, and creative expression among persons living with dementia (PWD) in an adult day service. This is an evaluation of BATL program efficacy.Methods A modified behavioral observation tool was used to quantify meaningful engagements as recorded in ethnographic field notes and test the hypotheses that 1) engagements increase across art therapy sessions, and 2) engagements were more social than activity or art related.Results The increase in engagement across session was not significant. However, social engagements (M = 9.61, SD 4.6) were more prevalent than art engagements (M = 5.23, SD = 3.1) in each session (t(99) = 9.52,). A thematic analysis of social interactions recorded in the ethnographic field notes revealed themes related to reminiscence.Conclusions The quantitative and qualitative data supported the BATL program as effective in engaging participants in social interaction and art activities. Specifically, quantitative data showed participants were engaged in conversations around reminiscence and discussion of creative expression with students.Clinical Implications Intergenerational social interaction between PWD and college students is a critical and meaningful part of the BATL program, and the intervention created a safe space with focused activity through engagement with art, and this facilitated PWD in self-expression, including humor, advice, and legacy.Hb A2 levels are usually high in carriers of β-thalassemia (β-thal). These levels also provide a sensitive marker for the identification of hemoglobin (Hb) variants. In this study, we aimed to examine two patients from two Chinese families who showed elevated Hb A2 levels but did not show any signs of β-thal. The HBB variants were analyzed using direct sequencing of HBB and in silico prediction analysis. Moreover, the family's genetic history was investigated. We examined two probands from different Chinese families with elevated Hb A2 levels who were not afflicted with β-thal, although several nucleotide changes were found at codon 81 (CTC>CTA) (HBB c.246C>A) in Family 1 and a compound heterozygosity for codon 40 (AGG>AAG) (HBB c.122G>A) and IVS-II-478 (C>A) (HBB c.316-373C>A) in Family 2. EPZ019997 3HCl After investigating the genetic history of both families including the β-thal aspect, we found that these mutations were not responsible for the elevated Hb A2 levels. It is rarely reported that high Hb A2 level is not indicative of β-thal. In contrast, low or normal Hb A2 level is always found with β-thal due to other molecular defects that mask their β-thal genotype. Our results highlight the importance of considering the genetic factors related and unrelated to β-thal to improve the accuracy of future genetic counseling.Objectives The aim of the current study was to investigate meaning-making in 57 older predominantly female adults (M = 72.68) required to temporarily cease attending a university-affiliated integrated care clinic in Australia with a focus on exercise and well-being due to COVID-19 restrictions, specifically regarding consequential grief, loss, hopelessness, and loss of purpose.Methods Quantitative and qualitative data were collected by telephone interviews and an online survey.Results Results indicated that most participants valued attending the Clinic, and experienced a number of physical, social and emotional benefits from attending, including a sense of meaning. Specifically, some participants developed social connections, learned to cope more effectively with mental health conditions, and regained strength following stressful or traumatic events through their attendance at the clinic.Conclusions Throughout the pandemic, most participants retained their resilience and continued to derive meaning from various sources, including their families, careers, interests, and attitude toward life.Clinical implications Older adults may experience enhanced physical, emotional and social health from engaging in community-based programs focused on exercise and overall wellness. Furthermore, meaning-making has the potential to buffer the harmful effects of stress and traumatic events on the physical, emotional and social health of older adults.Data from a multi-method, longitudinal study involving a community sample (N = 120) of pregnant women aged 18-42 were used to examine disrupted maternal representations of the child as a mechanism of the transmission of trauma from mother to infant. Using structural equation modeling, the best fitting model indicated that severity of mothers' childhood interpersonal trauma was associated with severity of disruption in prenatal representations of the child, which in turn was associated with less secure infant-mother attachment at 1 year of age. There was a significant indirect effect of maternal childhood interpersonal trauma on infant-mother attachment insecurity via disrupted prenatal maternal representations. Findings highlight an important mechanism of trauma transmission that could be targeted in interventions with mother-infant dyads.Objectives This narrative review article provides an overview on the involvement of microglia and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in the pathophysiology of depression, as well investigates the mutual relationship between these two entities how microglial activation can contribute to the dysregulation of the HPA axis, and vice versa.Methods Relevant studies and reviews already published in the Pubmed electronic database involving the themes microglia, HPA axis and depression were used to meet the objectives.Results Exposition to stressful events is considered a common factor in the mechanisms proposed to explain the depressive disorder. Stress can activate microglial cells, important immune components of the central nervous system (CNS). Moreover, another system involved in the physiological response to stressors is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the main stress response system responsible for the production of the glucocorticoid hormone (GC). Also, mediators released after microglial activation can stimulate the HPA axis, inducing production of GC. Likewise, high levels of GCs are also capable of activating microglia, generating a vicious cycle.Conclusion Immune and neuroendocrine systems seems to work in a coordinated manner and that their dysregulation may be involved in the pathophysiology of depression since neuroinflammation and hypercortisolism are often observed in this disorder.Performance during the baseball pitch is dependent on the flow of mechanical energy through the kinetic chain. Little is known about energy flow during the pitching motion and it is not known whether patterns of energy flow are related to pitching performance and injury risk. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to quantify energy generation, absorption, and transfer across the shoulder and elbow during the baseball pitch and explore the associations between these energetic measures, pitch speed, and traditional measures of upper extremity joint loading. The kinematics of 40 youth baseball pitchers were measured in a controlled laboratory setting. Energy flow between the thorax, humerus, and forearm was calculated using a segmental power analysis. Regression analyses revealed that pitch speed was best predicted by arm cocking phase shoulder energy transfer to the humerus and peak elbow valgus torque was best predicted by arm acceleration-phase elbow energy transfer to the forearm. Additionally, energy transfer across the shoulder and elbow generally exhibited the strongest correlations to pitch speed and upper extremity joint loads. These data reinforce the importance of energy transfer through the kinetic chain for producing high pitch speeds and provide descriptive data for energy flow during baseball pitching not previously found in the literature.Parent-reported satisfaction is an important outcome measure in pediatric neuropsychology; however, self-report of patient experience following lengthy pediatric assessments has been under-investigated. Written at a first grade reading level and utilizing touch screen and read-aloud functionality, a set of 15 operationally-focused items were administered to evaluate pediatric patient experience of neuropsychological and psychological assessment. One-hundred ninety-seven clinically-referred patients (M age = 11.74, SD = 3.17, range = 5.86-19.02 years, 56% male) answered the post-assessment survey. The majority of patients (n = 167; 84.77%) accurately completed the initial two validity items, even though many had parent-reported ratings of reading difficulty. More than a third of patients indicated that the assessment made them tired (39%), but fewer patients reported feeling bored (13%) or worried (7%) during testing. Moreover, most patients reported having fun (66%) and many indicated that testing was preferable to other activities typically performed at that same time (i.e., school, homework). Responses to items assessing the child's interactions with the clinician and the child's effort provided little variation and were answered in a socially desirable manner. Items that focused upon the child's personal response to the assessment appointment (e.g., boredom, worry), however, elicited greater variance in patient responding. In general, patient responses did not suggest that assessment was an aversive experience. Overall, these proof of concept findings suggest that most referred pediatric patients, even those with learning issues, may be capable of independently navigating and completing self-report questionnaires while providing differential responses to items assessing clinical experience. Self-report questionnaires appear to be a feasible method for acquiring pediatric patient-reported experiences of assessment.This paper presents a study of aero-engine exhaust gas electrostatic sensor array to estimate the spatial position, charge amount and velocity of charged particle. Firstly, this study establishes a mathematical model to analyze the inducing characteristics and obtain the spatial sensitivity distribution of sensor array. Then, Tikhonov regularization and compressed sensing are used to estimate the spatial position and charge amount of particle based on the obtained sensitivity distribution; cross-correlation algorithm is used to determine particle's velocity. An oil calibration test rig is established to verify the proposed methods. Thirteen spatial positions are selected as the test points. The estimation errors of spatial positions and charge amounts are both within 5% when the particles are locating at central area. The errors are higher when the particles are closer to the wall and may exceed 10%. The estimation errors of velocities by using cross-correlation are all within 2%. An air-gun test rig is further established to simulate the high velocity condition and distinguish different kinds of particles such as metal particles and non-metal particles.Unilateral cerebral palsy (UCP) usually results in damage to the unilateral pyramidal system. However, the clinical presentation of neuromotor deficits also suggests lesions to the extrapyramidal and cerebellar systems bilaterally. In this study, we developed and tested a behavioral neuromotor examination protocol assessing impairments at three levels of motor integration for children with UCP, also considering impairments of the non-paretic upper limb as well as the influences of the laterality of the lesion. We included 30 children with UCP (10.79 ± 2.61 years) and 60 healthy children (8.27 ± 1.57 years) in the study. All children were assessed on general cognitive ability and classified according to the manual ability classification system (MACS). Our neuromotor examination protocol incorporated specific tasks for each level of motor integration pyramidal, extrapyramidal and cerebellar. Children with UCP and controls did not differ with respect to general cognitive abilities and sex but children with UCP were significantly older.
