Primary uterine inertia (PUI) is the most common type of dystocia in dogs. We hypothesized that PUI develops because of lower than normal expression of the basic contractile elements in the uterus, i.e., smooth muscle (SM) α- and γ-actin and SM-myosin, and that the expression of these proteins is influenced by the number of fetuses present in utero. Full-thickness inter-placental uterine biopsies were collected during Cesarean sections from dogs with PUI (n = 11), and from bitches with obstructive dystocia (OD) still presenting strong labor contractions (designated as the control group, n = 7). Relative gene expression was determined by semi-quantitative real-time (TaqMan) PCR, and protein localization by immunohistochemistry. Gene expression between PUI and OD bitches, and between PUI bitches carrying small, large, or average number of fetuses according to their breed, were compared. Uterine SM-γ-actin and SM-myosin mRNA levels were significantly higher in PUI than in OD dogs, while SM-α-actin did not differ. PUI bitches carrying large litters had lower uterine SM-γ-actin gene expression than those with small litters (P = 0.008). Immunostaining for SM-actin isoforms and SM-myosin was present in the myometrium, and localization pattern and staining intensity appeared similar in the PUI and OD groups. All proteins stained in blood vessels, and SM-γ-actin was also present in endometrial luminal and glandular epithelium. In conclusion, higher uterine SM-γ-actin and SM-myosin gene expression in PUI bitches, compared with OD dogs, might be an indication of abnormal progression with labor. Whether this is the cause of PUI due to an intrinsic error of the myometrium not becoming committed to labor, or the consequence of inadequate endocrine or mechanical stimuli, is not clear. Litter size was previously shown to be one of the risk factors for the development of uterine inertia in dogs, and our findings suggest possible differing uterine pathophysiology of PUI with respect to litter size.Nowadays, there are an increasing number of reports of deep-sea accumulation of marine debris, often associated with a wide array of pernicious effects on benthic fauna. Nevertheless, there is still a huge knowledge gap regarding the interaction of benthic organisms and marine debris. In this paper, we report for the first time the colonization of plastic debris by the protected sponges Lycopodina hypogea. The sponges were discovered growing on plastic debris tangled with nylon ropes on the Blanes canyon (northwestern Mediterranean Sea). Over 30 individuals of L. hypogea were identified attached on ca. 10 cm2 plastic debris, an unusual feature for a species mostly known for low-density populations and a patchy distribution. The implications of this discovery are discussed, and it is suggested that marine debris might provide substrate for benthic species on otherwise unsuitable habitats, with its possible role as stepping-stones for deep-sea benthic connectivity needing further study.Stable isotopic composition of carbon (δ13CPOM) and nitrogen (δ15NPOM) in the particulate organic matter (POM) is used to identify sources of organic carbon and nutrients using monthly time-series observation in the coastal Bay of Bengal (BoB). The hydrographic structure indicates that the coastal BoB is influenced by coastal upwelling during March-May, advection of peninsular river discharge during June to September and glacial (Ganges) river discharge during October to December due to reversing of East India Coastal Currents (EICC). C/N ratios in POM were mostly higher values than Redfield ratio in the study region indicating possible contribution of terrestrial origin. Enriched δ13CPOM were found during March-May associated with coastal upwelling indicating major contribution of POM from the in situ production while lower values were noticed during June to September followed by October to December indicating influence of terrestrial sources. δ15NPOM displayed strong inverse relation with salinity and linear relation with Chl-a suggesting that anthropogenic nutrients from the land increased coastal phytoplankton biomass. δ15NPOM linearly decreased with increase in distance from the coast and reached to the typical offshore value of 6-6.5‰ indicating that terrestrial nutrients influence was spread up to a distance of 15 to 20 km from the coast in the study region. Our study suggested that coastal waters are influenced by terrestrial/anthropogenic nutrients and its impact can be noticed up to 15 to 20 km from the coast and its impact on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction may be negligible than hitherto hypothesized.Victoria Pure Blue BO is a dye that bears some therapeutic activity and that can be retrieved in effluent or may be used in aquaculture as a prohibited drug. In this study, the metabolism and tissue distribution during uptake and depuration of VPBO were investigated in order to propose a residue marker of illegal treatment in fish. The dye was administered to rainbow trout (oncorhynchus mykiss) for one day by water bath at a dose of 0.1 mg.L-1. The concentrations of VPBO in all tissues increased rapidly during the treatment period, reaching a Cmax of 567 ± 301 μg.L-1 in plasma and 1846 μg kg-1 ±517 for liver after 2 h. After placing the rainbow trout in a clean water bath for a 64 day-period of depuration, the concentrations in the tissues and plasma decreased to reach comparable levels for muscle and for skin after 33 days. The concentrations measured were still above the LOQ at 2.26 ± 0.48 μg kg-1 for muscle and 2.85 ± 1.99 μg kg-1 for skin at the end of the depuration period. The results indicated the existence of 14 phase I metabolites and one glucuronide conjugated metabolite. Non-compartmental analysis was applied to assess the pharmacokinetic parameters. The half-life in edible muscle of the main metabolite detected, deethyl-leuco-VPBO, was found to be 22.5 days compared to a half-life of 19.7 days for the parent VPBO. This study provides new information to predict a VPBO drug treatment of aquacultured species via a proposed new residue marker. The present study assessed the individual and combined toxicity effects of Ag- and TiO2- nanoparticles (NPs) on Ag bioaccumulation, oxidative stress, and gill histopathology in common carp as an aquatic animal model. The 96-h acute toxicity tests showed that TiO2NPs enhanced the toxicity of AgNPs deducted from the decreased LC50 in co-exposure to these NPs. Chronic toxicity tests included a 10-day exposure and a 10-day recovery period. In most cases, histological damages were more severe in co-exposure to Ag- and TiO2- NPs compared with the individual AgNPs however, they were reduced in some cases and also after the recovery period. In co-exposure to Ag- and TiO2- NPs, the Ag bioaccumulation was decreased in the gills but increased in the liver and intestine compared with the singular exposure. After the recovery period, Ag bioaccumulation decreased especially in the liver. Decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes were observed in the AgNPs exposed groups, which were partially alleviated by TiO2NPs. The reduction of condition factor (CF) and hepatosomatic index (HSI) and a severe decrease of weight gain (WG) were observed in co-exposure to Ag- and TiO2- NPs. After the recovery period, the CF and HSI increased but the WG decreased less compared with the exposure period. The present results emphasize the importance of considering the co-existence and interaction of NPs in realizing their bioavailability and toxicity in aquatic environments. This study aimed to determine the mineral profile of hair samples of free-ranging capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in remnants of the Atlantic Forest located in the Northeast of Brazil, and to evaluate the effects of origin, gender and age of the animals on their mineral accumulation in hair. selleck chemicals Twenty hair samples from animals of different areas, genders and ages were prepared using microwave-assisted digestion, employing 5 mL of HNO3 and 2.5 mL of H2SO4 for 100 mg of sample. Digestion efficiency was assessed by residual carbon content. The digested samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES). Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed considering the composition data of 11 elements (Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mn, Mo, and Na). The digestion method applied was efficient and the most abundant elements with their respective concentration ranges in mg kg-1 were Al (396-2746), Ca (36-3420), Fe (476-51180), K (115-4843), and Na (72-473). ANOVA and PCA differentiated among the capybaras regarding age (adults) and origin (A3), both associated with higher concentrations of Al, Cd, Fe, and K. Although a higher metal bioaccumulation was observed in adult animals, it is important to highlight that this result could have been affected by diet and physiological parameters. The results suggest that A3 was the most anthropized remnant area due to agricultural and urban influences. Multi-elemental determination in hair can be used as a non-invasive method to assess heavy metal contamination in capybaras. In the view of green and efficient removal of chromium pollution, uniform fiber ball loaded with Fe(OH)3 (UFB-Fe(OH)3), was firstly synthesized and successfully used in the photoreduction of Cr(VI) by oxalate acid (Ox). The Cr(VI) removal in UFB-Fe(OH)3+Ox + UV system was examined by the effect of concentration of Ox, initial Cr(VI) concentration, dosage of UFB-Fe(OH)3 and the reusability of UFB-Fe(OH)3. By studying the impact of the initial pH in the solution, the relationship between the change in pH during the reaction and the removal efficiency of Cr(VI), the effect of coexisting ion (NO3-), and the free radicals quenching tests, the Cr(VI) removal mechanism in UFB-Fe(OH)3+Ox + UV system was further deduced. The results showed that UFB-Fe(OH)3 could greatly enhance the photoreduction of Cr(VI) by Ox, 1.5 mM Cr(VI) was completely removed in 6 min by UFB-Fe(OH)3+Ox + UV system. UFB-Fe(OH)3 had the feasibility of multiple use, it still exhibited the excellent enhancement in Cr(VI) removal by Ox after six cycles of use. The Cr(VI) photoreduction mechanism was consist of three part i) Ox generate a part of CO2·- under the ultraviolet (UV) to reduce Cr(VI); ii) the Fe(III) dissolved by UFB-Fe(OH)3 formed FeOH2+ in the solution, and then generated very little Fe(II) under UV to remove Cr(VI); iii) the synergistic effect of UFB-Fe(OH)3 and Ox rapidly generated a large number of CO2·- and Fe(II) under UV excitation to reduce Cr(VI).Widely used conazole fungicides (CFs) belong to the most frequently detected pesticides in Central European arable soils. However, data on their environmental behaviour and bioavailability to soil organisms are surprisingly scarce. In the present laboratory microcosm study prochloraz, tebuconazole, epoxiconazole and flusilazole were applied to 12 different agricultural soils at background levels. Bioaccumulation to earthworm E. andrei and lettuce L. sativa roots and leaves was evaluated in non-aged (biota exposure after addition of pesticides) and aged (exposure started three months later) systems. In contrast with expectations from ageing effect (decrease of bioavailability), bioaccumulation in E. andrei was both reduced and enhanced after ageing depending on soil properties. The reduction of bioaccumulation correlated positively to the percentage of clay but negatively to soil organic matter. The affinity of compost worm E. andrei towards organic matter where hydrophobic pesticide molecules are sorbed is discussed as a possible explanation.
