Triacylglycerols (TGs), DGs, CERs, and OAHFAs were decreased in D-M+ group, whereas levels of PEs, phosphatidylinositols, and phosphatidylglycerols were increased in meibum obtained from the D-M+ group compared with those in the D-M- group. TGs, SMs, CERs, and PEs were decreased in the D+M+ group, whereas levels of LPCs, LPEs, PCs, and PEs were increased in meibum from the D-M+ group compared with those in the D+M- group.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to assess the changes in meibum from patients with ocular Demodex infestation. The significant increase of OAHFAs in the Demodex-positive group suggest that OAHFAs may be associated with the progress of ocular Demodex infections.

OAHFAs could be a potential new therapeutic target for ocular Demodex infestation.

To investigate the use of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and its effects on the ocular proteome as a therapeutic intervention for postoperative inflammation and fibrin formation following intraocular lens (IOL) insertion in a juvenile rabbit model.

Twenty-six rabbits, 6 to 7 weeks old, underwent lensectomy with IOL insertion. Following examination on day 3, 100 µL of either 25 µg of recombinant rabbit tPA or balanced salt solution (control) was injected into the anterior chamber. On postoperative day 4, rabbits underwent examination, and eyes were harvested and fixed for 9.4-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Three masked observers quantified fibrin scar volume using Horos Project software. Aqueous humor (AH) was collected immediately prior to surgery and on postoperative days 3 and 4. Proteins related to coagulation and inflammation were assessed in AH samples using targeted mass spectrometry via parallel reaction monitoring.

tPA significantly reduced the volume of fibrin 24hours following administration compared with control eyes (0.560 mm3 vs. 3.29 mm3; P < 0.0001). Despite the reduced fibrin scar, proteins related to the coagulation and complement cascade were not significantly different following tPA injection.

tPA may be a safe candidate for reduction of postoperative fibrin scarring after intraocular surgery. MRI can provide a quantitative value for fibrin volume changes.

tPA is a candidate to treat ocular fibrin scarring. MRI can quantify the efficacy of treatments in future dose-response studies. Targeted mass spectrometry can provide critical data necessary to help decipher the effect on the abundance of targeted proteins following pharmacological intervention.

Dictamnus dasycarpus is a plant of the Rutaceae family, and its root bark is the main part used as a medicine, named 'Bai-Xian-Pi'. It is used to clear away heat, remove dampness, and dispel wind and also used for detoxification. The purpose of this review is to provide a systematic review about the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of this plant.

More than 200 compounds have been isolated and identified from the plant, including alkaloids and their glycosides, terpenoids and their derivatives and phenylpropanoids. Extensive pharmacological activities of the extracts or compounds of D. dasycarpus in vivo and in vitro were mainly confirmed, including anti-inflammatory activity, protecting cardiovascular activity, improving liver injury and anti-cancer activity.

In this paper, the botany, traditional uses, phytochemistry and pharmacology of D. dasycarpus were reviewed. In the future, D. dasycarpus needs further study, such as paying more attention to quality control and the utilization on agriculture. In addition, discussing the medicinal components of decoction as well as the toxicity will also contribute to the progress of clinical trial studies.

Our aim is to explain the relationship between Ang II and Scl in osteoporotic (OP) rats and the contribution of Scl in the antiosteoporotic effect mechanism of angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB).

This study consists of two sub-studies conducted on 4th and 12th weeks after ovariectomy. In study 1, treatment was started immediately after bilateral ovariectomy (OVX), while, in study 2, treatment was started 2 months after OVX. Two different doses of telmisartan (5 and 10 mg/kg) were administered with the aid of gavage for 30 days in both sub-study groups.

Serum and tissue Scl, osteocalcin, osteopontin and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase mRNA expressions were higher and bone mineral densities (BMD) and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP) mRNA expressions were found to be lower in the OVX groups compared with the sham group. In OVX groups where two different doses of telmisartan were administered, BMD and BALP mRNA expressions increased and serum and tissue Scl decreased.

There may be a close relationship between angiotensin II and sclerostin in the development of osteoporosis. In this study, telmisartan administration showed an antiosteoporotic effect and significantly decreased the level of sclerostin. These results strongly support this relationship.

However, there is currently no review examining the phenomenon in-depth in the burn unit. Thus, the current study sought to scope existing studies to ascertain the prevalence, contributing factors, and effects of compassion fatigue in the burn unit. Compassion fatigue was conceptualised as comprising of burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Arksey and O'Malley scoping review approach was used and reported according to the PRISMA extension guidelines. Searches were undertaken across peer-reviewed databases and grey literature sources for quantitative studies. Following the search and screening process, nine studies were retained. Codes were formulated across studies following which narrative synthesis was undertaken. Majority of the studies (n=5) focused on burn care nurses. High levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and comparatively low level of personal achievement were reported among burn care staff which is indicative of burnout. Compassion fatigue was also observed to be high among burn care staff. Contributing factors are varied albeit some variables such as age, staffing levels, remuneration, nature of the work environment, and number of years worked were consistent across some studies. In conclusion, working in the burn unit is challenging with significant stressors that can lead to burnout, traumatic stress, and subsequently, compassion fatigue. EG-011 research buy Interventions to promote resilience, hardiness, optimal working environment, peer, and psychosocial support are greatly needed. We typically have a fairly good idea whether a given object is self-luminous or illuminated, but it is not fully understood how we make this judgment. This study aimed to identify determinants of the luminosity threshold, a luminance level at which a surface begins to appear self-luminous. We specifically tested a hypothesis that our visual system knows the maximum luminance level that a surface can reach under the physical constraint that a surface cannot reflect more light than any incident light and applies this prior to determine the luminosity thresholds. Observers were presented with a 2-degree circular test field surrounded by numerous overlapping colored circles and luminosity thresholds were measured as a function of (i) the chromaticity of the test field, (ii) the shape of surrounding color distribution, and (iii) the color of the illuminant of the surrounding colors. We found that the luminosity thresholds peaked around the chromaticity of test illuminants and decreased as the purity of the test chromaticity increased. However, the loci of luminosity thresholds across chromaticities were nearly invariant to the shape of the surrounding color distribution and generally resembled the loci drawn from theoretical upper-limit luminances and upper-limit luminance boundaries of real objects. These trends were particularly evident for illuminants on the black-body locus and did not hold well under atypical illuminants, such as magenta or green. These results support the idea that our visual system empirically internalizes the gamut of surface colors under natural illuminants and a given object appears self-luminous when its luminance exceeds this internalized upper-limit luminance.Mucormycosis is a rare fungal infection with a high mortality rate. It presents with scattered black/necrotic ulcers, white fungal elements, and progression of wounds despite seemingly adequate debridement. Diagnosis is confirmed on wound histology, however this is often delayed. There is currently no comprehensive review of burn related mucormycosis within the literature, making this the first paper to provide evidence-based treatment guidance. We performed a review of publications from 1946 - present. There were 151 cases of mucormycosis complicating burns. The mortality rate was 54.5%, and there was a significant increase in mortality with axial body site involvement compared with isolated peripheral involvement. The standard treatment was prompt and radical debridement. Utilisation of frozen section to guide debridement aided in clinical decision making. No systemic treatment reached statistical significance, however amphotericin B trended towards significance. Although there is no strong evidence for topical amphotericin B or hyperbaric oxygen, there may be benefit in some cases. This study recommends early radical debridement in conjunction with the European Confederation of Medical Mycology guidelines of IV liposomal/lipid complex amphotericin B >5mg/kg/day, with posaconazole 800mg daily in divided doses as a salvage or oral step-down 1.

Being born small for gestational age (SGA) is a leading cause of perinatal morbidity and mortality with no effective prevention or therapy. Maternal suboptimal nutrition and high stress levels have been associated with poor fetal growth and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

To investigate whether structured interventions based on a Mediterranean diet or mindfulness-based stress reduction (stress reduction) in high-risk pregnancies can reduce the percentage of newborns who were born SGA and other adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Parallel-group randomized clinical trial conducted at a university hospital in Barcelona, Spain, including 1221 individuals with singleton pregnancies (19-23 weeks' gestation) at high risk for SGA. Enrollment took place from February 1, 2017, to October 10, 2019, with follow-up until delivery (final follow-up on March 1, 2020).

Participants in the Mediterranean diet group (n = 407) received 2 hours monthly of individual and group educational sessions and free provision of extra-virgin olive oil and walnuts.
