Patients with congenital aetiology reported the least symptoms on Facial Disability Index (P less then  0.001). Most patients were recommended non-surgical management (n = 92, 64.3%); 51 (35.7%) were referred for botulinum toxin + facial physiotherapy, 25 (17.2%) for physiotherapy alone, seven (4.9%) for botulinum toxin alone and nine (6.3%) for conservative management. Fifty-one patients (35.7%) were recommended surgery, generating 75 procedures; 24 oculoprotective, 22 static, 12 gracilis transfers, 10 temporalis myoplasties and seven nerve transfers. CONCLUSION Iatrogenic injuries are the most common presentation for this clinic and have a more severe clinical presentation. Most patients presenting to the SFNC were managed non-surgically. © 2020 Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.INTRODUCTION AND AIMS The Australian Treatment Outcomes Profile (ATOP) was developed as a clinical tool for monitoring the substance use, health and wellbeing of clients in alcohol and other drug treatment. This is the first psychometric validation of the ATOP in a cannabis-dependent treatment population. DESIGN AND METHODS A total of 128 individuals with cannabis dependence enrolled in an outpatient randomised controlled trial were administered the ATOP and gold-standard health and wellbeing questionnaires once by clinicians and once by researchers at baseline. Concurrent validity was assessed by testing ATOP Psychological Health, Physical Health and Quality of Life questions against concurrently administered gold-standard questionnaires the Short Form 36 Health Survey (SF-36), the 21-item Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) and the Sheehan Disability Scale (SDS). Interrater reliability was tested by comparing clinician-administered ATOP items at the medical screening interview to the same ATOP items administered by researchers at baseline. RESULTS ATOP Psychological Health showed moderate to strong correlations with SF-36 Mental Components, SF-36 Mental Health and DASS-21 scores (r = 0.40-0.52) and ATOP Physical Health with SF-36 Physical Components and SF-36 General Health scores (r = 0.36-0.67). The ATOP Quality of Life scale showed moderate agreement with the SDS and six-dimensional health state short form scales (r = 0.38-0.40). ATOP substance use, employment, education and child care items showed good to excellent interrater reliability (Krippendorff's α = 0.62-0.81), and tobacco use, Psychological Health, Physical Health and Quality of Life showed fair to moderate interrater reliability (Krippendorff's α = 0.42-0.53). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS The ATOP appears to be valid and reliable when tested in a population with cannabis-dependence, justifying its widespread use in clinical settings. © 2020 Australasian Professional Society on Alcohol and other Drugs. The acquisition of active avoidance (AA) behavior is typically aided by the presence of two signals-the warning signal, which predicts the future occurrence of an aversive event (e.g., shocks), and the safety signal, which is presented upon successful avoidance of oncoming shocks. While the warning signal could be conceived to act as a Pavlovian fear cue, and is likely mediated by brain areas that underlie Pavlovian fear cue conditioning, the neural substrates underlying safety signaling are less clear, largely due to the unavailability of AA tasks that are devoid of an explicit warning signal. The present study sought to investigate the role of the ventral hippocampus (VH) in safety signaled AA performance acquired without an explicit warning signal, using a novel discrete trial paradigm. Adult male Long Evans rats were divided into two groups and trained to acquire AA responses with, or without a safety signal. Analysis of the acquisition and stable state performance data revealed that the availability of a safety signal alone did not improve the acquisition or performance of AA responses. Furthermore, post-training, reversible VH inactivation did not impact stable state avoidance behavior. However, extinction of avoidance responses was facilitated in the group trained with a safety signal, and this effect was further potentiated by VH inactivation. Additional elevated plus maze (EPM), light-dark box, and locomotor tests demonstrated that VH inactivation reduced anxiety without affecting locomotor activity. Taken together, these results demonstrate the importance of VH in the extinction of persistent pathological avoidance behavior when safety is signaled. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.BACKGROUND Lesions of the upper parapharyngeal space (UPPS) present a surgical challenge. The objective of this study was to ascertain the feasibility of a novel technique of modified transpterygoid approach to the UPPS. METHODS Six fresh cadaveric specimens (12 sides) were dissected, developing a technique that includes en bloc mobilization of the lateral pterygoid plate and muscle to access the UPPS. RESULTS Following an endoscopic Denker's approach and the removal of posterolateral wall of the antrum, the lateral pterygoid plate was detached from the pterygoid process. Subsequently, the lateral pterygoid plate and muscle were displaced laterally as a unit, allowing the identification of the posterior trunk of V3 and the fat in prestyloid compartment. Dissecting off the styloid aponeurosis affords entering the poststyloid UPPS exposing the internal carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and cranial nerves IX to XII. CONCLUSION This novel modification of the endonasal transpterygoid approach offers a viable alternative for access to the UPPS. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.While several studies in adolescents have addressed issues related to romantic relationships and dating violence, there is a limited understanding of their interaction patterns. This study aims to document interactions in conflict situations by identifying profiles of adolescent romantic relationships. Qualitative analysis based on the dimensions of the Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems was used to investigate the interaction task of 40 dyads. A typological analysis revealed four profiles (1) rigid, (2) entangled, (3) hampered, and (4) balanced. Results highlight the diversity of romantic experiences and offer a better understanding of the intricacies of different interaction profiles. Dating violence prevention efforts and programs promoting harmonious and egalitarian romantic relationships could benefit from the insights of the identified profiles. © 2020 Society for Research on Adolescence.BACKGROUND α-Tocopherol is a potent antioxidant present in the skin. Its concentration decreases with age. Synthetically available α-tocopherol is viscous, irritating to skin and unstable toward oxidation and ultraviolet (UV) light. AIMS To develop fatty acids based nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) gel loaded with α-tocopherol and to evaluate its moisturizing and anti-aging properties. METHODS Lauric acid, oleic acid, and Tween-80 were used as solid lipid, liquid lipid, and surfactant, respectively. Seven formulations (F0-F6) were developed by using different concentration of ingredients. Most optimized formulation (F2) was selected for further study on the basis of characterization. Dialysis tube method was used for release study. F2 was incorporated in gel, and then, in vitro and noninvasive in vivo study regarding skin moisture content by corneometer® and skin mechanical properties by cutometer® for 12 weeks on human volunteers (n = 13) was conducted. RESULTS Size, polydispersibility index (PDI), zeta potential, and %entrapment efficiency (%EE) of optimized formulation (F2) were found 82 nm, 0.261, -28.6, and 94.88 ± 1.16, respectively. Particles were spherical in shape. The release profile showed initial burst and then sustained release, and release data were best fitted to weibull model. α-tocopherol loaded NLC gel (NLCG) appeared physically stable for 12 weeks at room temperature and showed significant results in terms of skin capacitance and mechanical properties. Rheological assessment showed non-Newtonian behavior. CC-90001 chemical structure CONCLUSION Fatty acids based NLC proved to be a promising carrier of photochemically unstable lipophilic vitamin E with enhanced moisturizing and anti-aging properties. © 2020 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.A functional stainless steel microextraction fiber facilely prepared by in-situ growing metal-organic framework UiO-66 was presented and used for high-performance analysis of polycyclic musks. Via the robust Ag-SH bonding reaction, mercaptoacetic acid was easily anchored on Ag film to provide carboxyl group on the stainless steel fiber, then in-situ grown UiO-66 was fulfilled via the coordination reaction between Zr4+ and carboxyl group. Good characteristics including large surface area, high thermal stability and good adsorption property were achieved. Sensitive detection limits (0.015-0.04 ng·L-1 ) were achieved for polycyclic musks by coupling with GC-MS, and it could be stable enough for 150 extraction cycles without a significant loss of extraction efficiency. Compared with the classical commercial fibers, 2.2-11.4 times higher enhancement factors were shown. Applied to the analysis of fortified river water samples, five typical polycyclic musks were well detected with the recoveries of 90.2%-101.8%, respectively. It lighted a facile approach for preparing stainless steel microextraction fiber via chemically bonding in-situ grown metal-organic framework for the high-performance enrichment. Here, a simple and economical strategy that enables in situ separation of H2 /O2 product by manipulating the generated gas phases with the aid of multi-bioinspired electrodes is proposed. This versatile electrode is based on a Janus asymmetric foam with dual gradients, i.e., the wettability gradient promotes the one-way gas penetration and the geometry gradient boosts the spontaneous on-surface transport in the horizontal direction, which cooperatively facilitates self-driven 3D bubble transport in an aqueous environment. Benefitting from the 3D bionic electrode, the limited distance between the cathode and the anode can be reduced to 1 mm, and the corresponding current density is enhanced 1.5 times as compared with the common condition. This Janus triangular electrode with dual directionality elucidates 3D smart bubble manipulation during overall water splitting and should offer a great opportunity to develop advanced electrochemical processes toward complicated environments such as confined space and zero gravity. © 2020 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. To determine the key regulators for cardiac progenitor formation, we have developed a two-stage genome-wide CRISPR-knockout screen. We mimicked the progenitor formation process by differentiating human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) into cardiomyocytes, monitored by two distinct stage markers of early cardiac mesodermal formation and commitment to a multipotent heart progenitor cell fate MESP1 and ISL1, respectively. From the screen output, we compiled a list of 15 candidate genes. After validating seven of them, we identified ZIC2 as an essential gene for cardiac progenitor formation. ZIC2 is known as a master regulator of neurogenesis. hPSCs with ZIC2 mutated still express pluripotency markers. However, their ability to differentiate into cardiomyocytes was greatly attenuated. RNA-Seq profiling of the ZIC2-mutant cells revealed that the mutants switched their cell fate alternatively to the noncardiac cell lineage.
