As one of the most important porous materials, zeolites with intricate micropores have been widely employed as catalysts for decades due to their large pore volume, high surface area, and good thermal and hydrothermal stabilities. Among them, ferrierite (FER) zeolite with a two-dimensional micropore structure is an excellent heterogeneous catalyst for isomerization, carbonylation, cracking, and so on. In the past years, considering the important industrial application of FER zeolite, great efforts have been made to improve the synthesis of FER zeolite and thus decrease the synthesis cost and enhance catalytic performance. In this review, we briefly summarize the advances in the synthesis of FER zeolite including the development of synthesis routes, the use of organic templates, organotemplate-free synthesis, the strategies of morphology control, and the creation of intra-crystalline mesopores. Furthermore, the synthesis of hetero-atomic FER zeolites such as Fe-FER and Ti-FER has been discussed.Multi-drug resistant Acinetobacter baumannii is well-known for its rapid acclimatization in hospital environments. The ability of the bacterium to endure desiccation and starvation on dry surfaces for up to a month results in outbreaks of health care-associated infections. Previously, indole and its derivatives were shown to inhibit other persistent bacteria. We found that among 16 halogenated indoles, 5-iodoindole swiftly inhibited A. baumannii growth, constrained biofilm formation and motility, and killed the bacterium as effectively as commercial antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, colistin, and gentamicin. 5-Iodoindole treatment was found to induce reactive oxygen species, resulting in loss of plasma membrane integrity and cell shrinkage. In addition, 5-iodoindole rapidly killed three Escherichia coli strains, Staphylococcus aureus, and the fungus Candida albicans, but did not inhibit the growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study indicates the mechanism responsible for the activities of 5-iodoindole warrants additional study to further characterize its bactericidal effects on antibiotic-resistant A. baumannii and other microbes.Extracts from aerial parts of G. aparine (cleavers) constitute a herbal remedy with monography in British Herbal Pharmacopeia. On the European market, there are several drugs and food supplements consisting of Galium extracts. In folk medicine, cleavers was used topically in Europe, Asia, and the Americas to treat skin diseases. In several remedies, cleavers is also listed as an immunomodulatory active herb influencing the defense response of the human body. The aim of this study was to investigate the immunostimulatory activity and antioxidant potential in vitro of a raw infusion of cleavers and bioactive fractions. The conversion of Aβ into neurotoxic oligomeric, fibrillar, and protofibrillar assemblies is supposed to be the main pathological event in AD. After Aβ accumulation, the clinical symptoms fall out predominantly due to the deficient brain clearance of the peptide. For several years, researchers have attempted to decline the Aβ monomer, oligomer, and aggregate levels, as well as plaques, employing agents that facilitate the reduction of Aβ and antagonize Aβ aggregation, or raise Aβ clearance from brain. The goal of this study was to generate a library of oxidized alginate (oALG) and oxidized hyaluronic acid (oHA) that can be used for in situ gelling hydrogels by covalent reaction between aldehyde groups of the oxidized polysaccharides (oPS) and amino groups of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) through imine bond formation. Here, we studied the effect of sodium periodate concentration and reaction time on aldehyde content, molecular weight of derivatives and cytotoxicity of oPS towards 3T3-L1 fibroblasts. It was found that the molecular weights of all oPs decreased with oxidation and that the degree of oxidation was generally higher in oHA than in oALG. Studies showed that only oPs with an oxidation degree above 25% were cytotoxic. Initial studies were also done on the crosslinking of oPs with CMC showing with rheometry that rather soft gels were formed from higher oxidized oPs possessing a moderate cytotoxicity. The results of this study indicate the potential of oALG and oHA for use as in situ gelling hydrogels or inks in bioprinting for application in tissue engineering and controlled release.This paper describes an experimental investigation into the compaction characteristics of cement-stabilized macadam base materials (CSMBM) in a saline soil area. Through the field tests, the main causes of arch expansion in an existing road were analyzed. Based on this, the compaction tests and microscopic tests were designed to analyze the impacts of temperature, sodium sulfate content and cement content on the compaction characteristics of CSMBM. Then, the orthogonal test was designed to analyze the effects of the degree of the temperature, the cement content, and the sodium sulfate content on the compaction results of the CSMBM. Feld tests results show that the temperature, sodium sulfate content and cement content may be the main causes of arch expansion. The compaction tests show that with the temperature increasing, the optimal water content (OWC) decreases, but the maximum dry density (MDD) increases; with the sodium sulfate content increasing, the OWC increases, but the MDD decreases; with the cement content increasing, both MDD and OWC increase. The microscopic tests show that the increase of temperature and cement content is beneficial to the compactness between cementitious materials and aggregates, while the increase of sodium sulfate content makes the whole structure of cementitious materials and aggregates increasingly rough. The orthogonal test shows that the temperature has the greatest influence on the MMD, and the sodium sulfate content has the greatest influence on the OWC. Thus, in a sulfate saline soil area, the construction temperature, the sodium sulfate content and the cement content should be controlled to ensure the compaction quality of CSMBM.Wine made from grapes exposed to bushfire smoke can exhibit unpleasant smoky, ashy characters, which have been attributed to the presence of smoke-derived volatile phenols, in free or glycosylated forms. Here we report the uptake and glycosylation of volatile phenols by grapes following exposure of Cabernet Sauvignon vines to smoke, and their fate during winemaking. A significant delay was observed in the conversion of volatile phenols to their corresponding glycoconjugates, which suggests sequestration, the presence of intermediates within the glycosylation pathway and/or other volatile phenol storage forms. This finding has implications for industry in terms of detecting smoke-affected grapes following vineyard smoke exposure. The potential for an in-canopy sprinkler system to mitigate the uptake of smoke-derived volatile phenols by grapes, by spraying grapevines with water during smoke exposure, was also evaluated. While "misting" appeared to partially mitigate the uptake of volatile phenols by grapes during grapevine exposure to smoke, it did not readily influence the concentration of volatile phenols or the sensory perception of smoke taint in wine. Commercial sensors were used to monitor the concentration of smoke particulate matter (PM) during grapevine exposure to low and high density smoke. Similar PM profiles were observed, irrespective of smoke density, such that PM concentrations did not reflect the extent of smoke exposure by grapes or risk of taint in wine. The sensors could nevertheless be used to monitor the presence of smoke in vineyards during bushfires, and hence, the need for compositional analysis of grapes to quantify smoke taint marker compounds.Healthy aging is associated with decline in the ability to maintain visual information in working memory (WM). We examined whether this decline can be explained by decreases in the ability to filter distraction during encoding or to ignore distraction during memory maintenance. Distraction consisted of irrelevant objects (Exp. 1) or irrelevant features of an object (Exp. 2). In Experiment 1, participants completed a spatial WM task requiring remembering locations on a grid. During encoding or during maintenance, irrelevant distractor positions were presented. In Experiment 2, participants encoded either single-feature (colors or orientations) or multifeature objects (colored triangles) and later reproduced one of these features using a continuous scale. In multifeature blocks, a precue appeared before encoding or a retrocue appeared during memory maintenance indicating with 100% certainty to the to-be-tested feature, thereby enabling filtering and ignoring of the irrelevant (not-cued) feature, respectively. There were no age-related deficits in the efficiency of filtering and ignoring distractor objects (Exp. 1) and of filtering irrelevant features (Exp. 2). Both younger and older adults could not ignore irrelevant features when cued with a retrocue. Overall, our results provide no evidence for an aging deficit in using attention to manage visual WM.The heterogeneity and dynamism of people make addressing user diversity and its categorisation critical factors, which should be carefully considered when developing pro-environmental strategies and interventions. Nevertheless, the complexities of individuals complicates the creation of modelling and classification systems. The aforementioned issue opens a research opportunity, which should be tackled to improve the development of human-centric systems and processes. Throughout the present piece of research, our objective is to bridge that gap by extracting knowledge and insights relating to how to address user diversity when designing technologies considering sustainable behaviour. For this, we explore the possibilities of the FOX model-an early meta-model to approach the diversity of individuals when addressing pro-environmental behaviour-to classify and understand individuals while taking their heterogeneity into account. After introducing the model, a qualitative survey of eight experts is conducted. From this study, relevant findings are analysed and exposed.
