Four groups were constituted according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), based on OGTT results control group (n40); prediabetic group (n56), divided into two subgroups impaired fasting glucose group (IFG) (n36), and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) +IFG group (n20) and type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) group (n45).

Zonulin and LPS did not significantly differ between the prediabetes and control groups, but were significantly higher in the T2DM group compared to both the prediabetic and the control group (P<0.001). After OGTT, zonulin and LPS were significantly higher in the prediabetes group compared to the control group (P<0.01 and P<0.05, respectively), and significantly lower in the IFG and IFG+IGT groups compared to the T2DM group (P<0.001, P<0.001 and P<0.001, P<0.001, respectively). A positive correlation was detected between fasting zonulin and 2-hour zonulin (r=0.727, P<0.001) and between fasting LPS (r=0.555, P<0.001) and 2-hour LPS (r=0.567, P<0.001) in the prediabetic group. Increased zonulin and LPS levels and the positive correlation between these levels during the prediabetic period although non significant suggests onset of intestinal permeability.

In this Personal View, I set out an economic theory that emphasises some of the ways in which neoliberal capitalism's conceptualisation of value has mediated responses to COVID-19. Using the intersection of ecological, feminist, and Marxist economics, I develop an analysis of neoliberal capitalism as a specific historical form of the economy. I identify the accumulation of exchange value as a central tendency of neoliberal capitalism and argue that this tendency creates barriers to the production of other forms of value. I then analyse the implications of this tendency in the context of responses to COVID-19. I argue that resources and labour flow to the production of exchange value, at the expense of production of other value forms. Consequently, the global capitalist economy has unprecedented productive capacity but uses little of this capacity to create the conditions that improve and maintain people's health. To be more resilient to coming crises, academics, policy makers, and activists should do theoretical work that enables global economies to recognise multiple forms of value and political work that embeds these theories in societal institutions.

Between 2014 and 2017, successive cholera epidemics occurred in South Sudan within the context of civil war, population displacement, flooding, and drought. We aim to describe the spatiotemporal and molecular features of the three distinct epidemic waves and explore the role of vaccination campaigns, precipitation, and population movement in shaping cholera spread in this complex setting.

Exposure to temperature variability has been associated with increased risk of mortality and morbidity. We aimed to evaluate whether the association between short-term temperature variability and hospitalisation was affected by local socioeconomic level in Brazil.

In this time-series study, we collected city-level socioeconomic data, and daily hospitalisation and weather data from 1814 Brazilian cities between Jan 1, 2000, and Dec 31, 2015. All-cause and cause-specific hospitalisation data was from the Hospital Information System of the Unified Health System in Brazil. City-specific daily minimum and maximum temperatures came from a 0·25° × 0·25° Brazilian meteorological dataset. We represented city-specific socioeconomic level using literacy rate, urbanisation rate, average monthly household income per capita (using the 2000 and 2010 Brazilian census), and GDP per capita (using statistics from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics for 2000-15), and cities were categorised according to the 2015 World Bank standard.
