We report a synthesis strategy for pure hydroxyapatite (HAp) using an amorphous calcium carbonate (ACC) colloid as the starting source. Room-temperature phosphorylation and subsequent calcination produce pure HAp via intermediate amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP). The pre-calcined sample undergoes a competitive transformation from ACC to ACP and crystalline calcium carbonate. The water content, ACC concentration, Ca/P molar ratio, and pH during the phosphorylation reaction play crucial roles in the final phase of the crystalline phosphate compound. selleck Pure HAp is formed after ACP is transformed from ACC at a low concentration (1 wt%) of ACC colloid (1.71  less then  Ca/P  less then  1.88), whereas Ca/P = 1.51 leads to pure β-tricalcium phosphate. The ACP phases are precursors for calcium phosphate compounds and may determine the final crystalline phase.Computed Tomography (CT) is widely used in oncology for morphological evaluation and diagnosis, commonly through visual assessments, often exploiting semi-automatic tools as well. Well-established automatic methods for quantitative imaging offer the opportunity to enrich the radiologist interpretation with a large number of radiomic features, which need to be highly reproducible to be used reliably in clinical practice. This study investigates feature reproducibility against noise, varying resolutions and segmentations (achieved by perturbing the regions of interest), in a CT dataset with heterogeneous voxel size of 98 renal cell carcinomas (RCCs) and 93 contralateral normal kidneys (CK). In particular, first order (FO) and second order texture features based on both 2D and 3D grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCMs) were considered. Moreover, this study carries out a comparative analysis of three of the most commonly used interpolation methods, which need to be selected before any resampling procedure. Results showed that the Lanczos interpolation is the most effective at preserving original information in resampling, where the median slice resolution coupled with the native slice spacing allows the best reproducibility, with 94.6% and 87.7% of features, in RCC and CK, respectively. GLCMs show their maximum reproducibility when used at short distances.Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) populations are at an increased risk of developing COVID-19 and consequentially more severe outcomes compared to White populations. The aim of this study was to quantify how much of the disproportionate disease burden can be attributed to ethnicity and deprivation as well as its interaction. An ecological study was conducted using data derived from the Office for National Statistics data at a Local Authority District (LAD) level in England between 1st March and 17th April 2020. The primary analysis examined how age adjusted COVID-19 mortality depends on ethnicity, deprivation, and the interaction between the two using linear regression. The secondary analysis using spatial regression methods allowed for the quantification of the extent of LAD spillover effect of COVID-19 mortality. We find that in LADs with the highest deprivation quartile, where there is a 1 percentage point increase in "Black-African (regression coefficient 2.86; 95% CI 1.08-4.64)", "Black-Caribbean (9.66 95% CI 5.25-14.06)" and "Bangladeshi (1.95 95% CI 1.14-2.76)" communities, there is a significantly higher age-adjusted COVID-19 mortality compared to respective control populations. In addition, the spatial regression results indicated positive significant correlation between the age-adjusted mortality in one LAD and the age-adjusted mortality in a neighbouring LAD, suggesting a spillover effect. Our results suggest targeted public health measures to support those who are deprived and belong to BAME communities as well as to encourage restricted movement between different localities to limit disease propagation.Circular RNA (circRNA), a novel class of noncoding RNAs, has been used extensively to complement transcriptome remodeling in the central nervous system, although the genomic coverage provided has rarely been studied in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and is limited and fails to provide a detailed picture of the cerebral transcriptome landscape. Here, we described sequencing-based transcriptome profiling, providing comprehensive analysis of cerebral circRNA, messenger RNA (mRNA) and microRNA (miRNA) expression in ICH rats. In the study, male Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to ICH, and next-generation sequencing of RNAs isolated from non-hemorrhagic (Sham) and hemorrhagic (ICH) rat brain samples collected 7 (early phase) and 28 (chronic phase) days after insults, was conducted. Bioinformatics analysis was performed to determine miRNA binding sites and gene ontology of circRNAs, target genes of miRNAs, as well as biological functions of mRNAs, altered after ICH. These analyses revealed different expression profiles of circRNAs, mRNAs and miRNAs in day-7 and day-28 ICH groups, respectively, compared with the Sham. In addition, the expression signature of circRNAs was more sensitive to disease progression than that of mRNAs or miRNAs. Further analysis suggested two temporally specific circRNA-miRNA-mRNA networks based on the competitive endogenous RNA theory, which had profound impacts on brain activities after ICH. In summary, these results suggested an important role for circRNAs in the pathogenesis of ICH and in reverse remodeling based on self-protection support, providing deep insights into diverse possibilities for ICH therapy through targeting circRNAs.In this study, we reexamine the effect of two types of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modes on Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) activity in terms of the frequency of MJO phases. Evaluating all-season data, we identify two dominant zonal patterns of MJO frequency exhibiting prominent interannual variability. These patterns are structurally similar to the Wheeler and Hendon (Mon. Weather Rev. link2 1321917-1932, 2004) RMM1 and RMM2 spatial patterns. The first pattern explains a higher frequency of MJO activity over the Maritime Continent and a lower frequency over the central Pacific Ocean and the western Indian Ocean, or vice versa. The second pattern is associated with a higher frequency of MJO active days over the eastern Indian Ocean and a lower frequency over the western Pacific, or vice versa. We find that these two types of MJO frequency patterns are related to the central Pacific and eastern Pacific ENSO modes. To determine the extent to which the difference in the lengths of the first and second MT bones, measured distal to the Maestro line, contribute to the severity of the hallux valgus (HV) deformity defined by the size of the hallux valgus angle (HVA) and inter-metatarsal angle (IMA). On a sample of 319 feet with HV deformity the difference of measured lengths R = d (I MT) - d (II MT) was calculated The influence of differences (R) on the values of IMA and HVA as well as on the severity of deformities according to the formed groups was investigated. The influence of age on the development of deformities was examined separately as well as in conjunction with the determined difference in lengths. In 203 feet or 63.7%, a shorter MT bone was measured, while in 80 feet or 25.1% the first MT bone was longer than second ones and only in 36 feet or 11.3% there is no difference in the length of the 1st and 2ndMT bones distal to the Maestro line. A statistically significant correlation was found between the difference between the measured lengths of 1st and 2nd MT bones and IMA, while this correlation with HVA was not statistically significant. There is no statistically significant correlation or the effect of the difference in measured lengths (R) on the severity of hallux valgus deformity classified into three groups. A statistically significant correlation and impact of the age on the intensity of the deformity are established. A shorter 1st MT bone in correlation to the 2nd MT bone is accompanied by an increase in IMA and this correlation and impact are statistically significant. It was not established that there was a statistically significant influence of the length of the first and second metatarsal bone measured distal from Maestro line upon the values of HVA and severity of HV deformity. Age significantly contributes to the severity of the deformity.Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are potent therapeutic options for many types of advanced cancer. The expansion of ICIs use however has led to an increase in immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Secondary adrenal insufficiency (AI) can be life-threatening especially in patients with delayed diagnosis. We retrospectively investigated secondary AI in ICI-treated patients. A total of 373 cancer patients treated with ICIs were included and evaluated. An adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) deficiency was described in 13 patients. Among 24 patients with a combination of nivolumab and ipilimumab therapy, 7 patients (29%) developed secondary AI in a median time of 8 weeks during the combination therapy and 2 of 15 patients (13%) developed isolated ACTH deficiency during maintenance nivolumab monotherapy following the combination therapy. More than half of the patients (4/7) with a combination therapy-induced multiple anterior hormone deficiencies was diagnosed as secondary AI based on regular ACTH and cortisol tests with slight subjective symptoms. Secondary AI can arise frequently and rapidly in cancer patients receiving a combination ICI therapy, and thus we speculate active surveillance of AI using regular ACTH and cortisol tests during the combination therapy might be useful for avoiding life-threatening conditions due to secondary AI.Environmental cues associated with an action can prime the motor system, decreasing response times and activating motor regions of the brain. However, when task goals change, the same responses to former go-associated cues are no longer required and motor priming needs to be inhibited to avoid unwanted behavioural errors. The present study tested whether the inhibition of motor system activity to presentations of former go cues is reliant on top-down, goal-directed cognitive control processes using a working memory (WM) load manipulation. Applying transcranial magnetic stimulation over the primary motor cortex to measure motor system activity during a Go/No-go task, we found that under low WM, corticospinal excitability was suppressed to former go and trained no-go cues relative to control cues. link3 Under high WM, the cortical suppression to former go cues was reduced, suggesting that the underlying mechanism required executive control. Unexpectedly, we found a similar result for trained no-go cues and showed in a second experiment that the corticospinal suppression and WM effects were unrelated to local inhibitory function as indexed by short-interval intracortical inhibition. Our findings reveal that the interaction between former response cues and WM is complex and we discuss possible explanations of our findings in relation to models of response inhibition.
