Dead Key Fob Battery

Modern key fobs let us unlock doors, trunks and tailgates without the need for a car key. Certain key fobs come with an inbuilt key that can be utilized to start our vehicles. However, these key fobs depend on a small battery that powers their remote functions. If the battery fails and the key fob dies, it will not be able to transmit the signal to activate the vehicle. There are a variety of ways to fix a dead car key fob.

First, determine if the key fob is actually dead. If it seems to be dead, you'll need to replace the batteries. You can do it yourself by taking the fob off its clip, or by using a flat-head screwdriver. Be careful not to put too much pressure on the fob or you may cause damage to the fob. You should also make sure that you're using the correct type of battery. Certain models may require a different battery. You can determine what type of battery your car requires in the owner's manual, or you can visit an Interstate All Battery Center and get a specialist in battery care to assist you.

If the key fob actually isn't dead, you can sometimes revive it by moving closer to your vehicle. Since the majority of key fobs are RFID (radio-frequency identification) they only function for a short time and must be near enough to allow the ignition system to be able to recognize the signal. You can unlock your car, or even start it by moving a couple of inches closer.

Many car manufacturers have backup mechanisms that is activated when the key fob battery is dead. Ford for instance has a slot that is devoted to the key fob. If it is properly inserted, the key fob will start the car's engine. You can find instructions in the owner's manual on how to locate this slot and insert the key fob in the correct way. If you're unable to start your car using this method, make sure to contact roadside assistance for assistance.

The chip in the key fob is the one that communicates with your vehicle's immobilizer system to begin the engine. The chip could be damaged or there might be programming errors. If this happens, your key fob won't be able to send the correct identification code and your car won't begin. A damaged transponder may be caused by physical damage to the key shell, or wear and tear on the contact pads.

Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keyfobs has snapped off the tiny key loop at the top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've made a hole in it, and wet-sanded it to strengthen it however, I'm assuming that the issue isn't solved by this.

I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring in clear tape, but that isn't doing any good. It's a shame because I rely on the small split rings to keep my keys in place.

If the case for the key fob is damaged it is usually possible to open up the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). There are online kits available, but they only provide an interim solution. It is more efficient to get it fixed by a professional. You can also locate a new case at the locksmith or home improvement stores. They are not likely to cost as much as an entirely new key fob.
