g., BSDS, MRSC). The merits of our proposed approach are that it is not sensitive to added noises and that the segmentation performance is higher with images of nonhomogeneous regions.Candidemia is an important cause of morbidity and mortality especially in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. We retrospectively collected data of candidemia cases that occurred in the seven Hematology-Oncology Departments/Units of Greece and the Stem Cell Transplant Unit between 2015 and 2019. In total, 19 episodes of candidemia in 19 patients were recorded. The majority of the patients (78.9%) had at least one risk factor for candidemia. The most frequent risk factors associated with candidemia observed in our patients were prolonged duration of hospitalization (30 days, range 1-141), presence of a central venous catheter at diagnosis of candidemia (73.7%) and antibiotics use during the last two weeks (84.2%). Candida parapsilosis was the most common species isolated accounting for 42.1%, followed by C. albicans (26.3%) and C. famata (15.8%). Nearly all of the patients (84.2%) received antifungal monotherapy with liposomal amphotericin B or echinocandins. The central venous catheter was removed in 78.6% of patients and the median time between the first positive blood culture and catheter removal was 3 days (range 1-9). Mortality at 28 days was 26.3%. In conclusion, a predominance of non-albicans species was observed in our study in conformity with the global trend. The disease caused by the new SARS-CoV-2, known as Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was first identified in China in December 2019 and rapidly spread around the world. Coinfections with fungal pathogens in patients with COVID-19 add challenges to patient care. We conducted a literature review on fungal coinfections in patients with COVID-19. We describe a report of a patient with disseminated histoplasmosis who was likely infected with SARS-CoV-2 and experienced COVID-19 during hospital care in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This patient presented with advanced HIV disease, a well-known factor for disseminated histoplasmosis; on the other hand, we suspected that COVID-19 was acquired during hospitalization but there is not enough evidence to support this hypothesis. Clinical correlation and the use of specific Histoplasma and COVID-19 rapid diagnostics assays were key to the timely diagnosis of both infections, permitting appropriate treatment and patient care.Rheumatic diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders which often affect the musculoskeletal system. Given the lack of definitive testing, there are limited diagnostic tools at clinicians' disposal. Over the recent decades, ultrasonography has gained widespread use within rheumatology due to its accessibility, safety, and relatively low cost. This review describes the clinical utility of ultrasound as a biomarker in the diagnosis and management of several rheumatic diseases.Titanium dioxide (TiO2), the golden standard among the photocatalysts, exhibits a varying level of photocatalytic activities (PCA) amongst the synthetically prepared and commercially available products. For commercial applications, superior photoactivity and cost-effectiveness are the two main factors to be reckoned with. This study presents the development of simple, cost-effective post-treatment processes for a less costly TiO2 to significantly enhance the PCA to the level of expensive commercial TiO2 having demonstrated superior photoactivities. We have utilized sequential calcination and ball milling (BM) post-treatment processes on a less-costlier KA100 TiO2 and demonstrated multi-fold (nearly 90 times) enhancement in PCA. The post-treated KA100 samples along with reference commercial samples (P25, NP400, and ST01) were well-characterized by appropriate instrumentation and evaluated for the PCA considering acetaldehyde photodegradation as the model reaction. Lattice parameters, phase composition, crystallite size, surface functionalities, titanium, and oxygen electronic environments were evaluated. Among post-treated KA100, the sample that is subjected to sequential 700 °C calcination and BM (KA7-BM) processes exhibited 90-fold PCA enhancement over pristine KA100 and the PCA-like commercial NP400 (pure anatase-based TiO2). Based on our results, we attribute the superior PCA for KA7-BM due to the smaller crystallite size, the co-existence of mixed anatase-srilankite-rutile phases, and the consequent multiphase heterojunction formation, higher surface area, lattice disorder/strain generation, and surface oxygen environment. The present work demonstrates a feasible potential for the developed post-treatment strategy towards commercial prospects. The red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum, is an important pest of stored products. We compared an existing standard commercial trap with five experimental trap designs differing from the status quo in shape, surface texture, and in forced air capability provided by fans. We tested the five new traps and a commercial trap with T. castaneum adults with the presence/absence of air flow and the availability of either the pheromone only or both the pheromone and kairomone. Without using the fans and baited with pheromone only, these new trap designs capture beetles three to five times as efficiently as the status quo trap. Use of both pheromone and kairomone doubled the capture efficiency of the status quo trap but did not significantly affect the capture efficiency of the new trap designs, all of which captured significantly more effectively than the status quo trap. Turning on fans for forced ventilation significantly improved trap efficiency of the more effective of the newer traps compared to monitoring with both pheromone and kairomone but no fan. This study provides new insights into factors affecting trap efficiency for monitoring of T. castaneum in grain storage facilities, and suggests ways in which existing traps might be improved. The synthesis, structural characterization and influence of solvents on the crystal packing of solvated complexes of ethacridine with phthalic acid 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridinium phthalate methanol solvate (1), 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridinium phthalate ethanol solvate (2), 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridinium phthalate isobutanol solvate (3), and 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridinium phthalate tert-butanol solvate monohydrate (4) are described in this article. Single-crystal XRD measurements revealed that the compounds 1-4 crystallized in the triclinic P-1 space group, and the 6,9-diamino-2-ethoxyacridinium cations, phthalic acid anions and solvent molecules interact via strong N-H···O, O-H···O, C-H···O hydrogen bonds, and C-H···π and π-π interactions to form different types of basic structural motifs, such as heterotetramer bis[···cation···anion···] in compound 1 and 2, heterohexamer bis[···cation···alcohol···anion···] in compound 3, and heterohexamer bis[···cation···water···anion···] in compound 4. read more Presence of solvents molecule(s) in the crystals causes different supramolecular synthons to be obtained and thus has an influence on the crystal packing of the compounds analyzed.Securiniga suffruticosa is known as a drug that has the effect of improving the blood circulation and relaxing muscles and tendons, thereby protects and strengthen kidney and spleen. Therefore, in this study, treatment of Securiniga suffruticosa showed protective effect of inhibiting the vascular inflammation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) by inducing nitric oxide (NO) production and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) coupling pathway. In this study, Securiniga suffruticosa suppressed TNF-α (Tumor necrosis factor-α) induced protein and mRNA levels of cell adhesion molecules such as intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6). Pretreatment of HUVEC with Securiniga suffruticosa decreased the adhesion of HL-60 cells to Ox-LDL (Oxidized Low-Density-Lipoprotein)-induced HUVEC. Moreover, Securiniga suffruticosa inhibited TNF-α induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Securiniga suffruticosa also inhibited phosphorylation of IκB-α in cytoplasm and translocation of NF-κB (Nuclear factor-kappa B) p65 to the nucleus. Securiniga suffruticosa increased NO production, as well increased the phosphorylation of eNOS and Akt (protein kinase B) which are related with NO production. In addition, Securiniga suffruticosa increased the protein expression of GTPCH (Guanosine triphosphate cyclohydrolase Ⅰ) and the production of BH4 in HUVEC which are related with eNOS coupling pathway. In conclusion, Securiniga suffruticosa has a protective effect against vascular inflammation and can be a potential therapeutic agent for early atherosclerosis.Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disease in the world. In primary healthcare, knee OA is diagnosed using clinical examination and radiographic assessment. Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) atlas of OA radiographic features allows performing independent assessment of knee osteophytes, joint space narrowing and other knee features. This provides a fine-grained OA severity assessment of the knee, compared to the gold standard and most commonly used Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) composite score. In this study, we developed an automatic method to predict KL and OARSI grades from knee radiographs. Our method is based on Deep Learning and leverages an ensemble of residual networks with 50 layers. We used transfer learning from ImageNet with a fine-tuning on the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI) dataset. An independent testing of our model was performed on the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST) dataset. Our method yielded Cohen's kappa coefficients of 0.82 for KL-grade and 0.79, 0.84, 0.94, 0.83, 0.84 and 0.90 for femoral osteophytes, tibial osteophytes and joint space narrowing for lateral and medial compartments, respectively. Furthermore, our method yielded area under the ROC curve of 0.98 and average precision of 0.98 for detecting the presence of radiographic OA, which is better than the current state-of-the-art.The P2X7 receptor (P2X7R) possesses a unique structure associated to an as yet not fully understood mechanism of action that facilitates cell permeability to large ionic molecules through the receptor itself and/or nearby membrane proteins. High extracellular adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels-inexistent in physiological conditions-are required for the receptor to be triggered and contribute to its role in cell damage signaling. The inconsistent data on its activation pathways and the few studies performed in natively expressed human P2X7R have led us to review the structure, activation pathways, and specific cellular location of P2X7R in order to analyze its biological relevance. The ATP-gated P2X7R is a homo-trimeric receptor channel that is occasionally hetero-trimeric and highly polymorphic, with at least nine human splice variants. It is localized predominantly in the cellular membrane and has a characteristic plasticity due to an extended C-termini, which confers it the capacity of interacting with membrane structural compounds and/or intracellular signaling messengers to mediate flexible transduction pathways.
