Treatment of bone infections with PMMA is mainly for two-stage rTKA where antibiotic-loaded PMMA is inserted as a spacer. This review also shows that using antibiotic-loaded PMMA might cause complications such as toxicity to surrounding tissue, incomplete antibiotic agent release from the PMMA, roughness and bacterial colonization on the surface of PMMA. Although PMMA is the only commercial bone cement used in rTKA, there are concerns associated with using PMMA following rTKA. More research and clinical studies are needed to address these complications.This study aims to develop nanofibrous membranes where Eucalyptus globules oil (EGO) is wrapped in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The EGO-based nanofibrous membranes are then evaluated for the protection against Forcipomyia taiwana (F. taiwana). In the first stage, the PVA solutions are formulated with different concentrations and are measured for viscosity and electrical conductivity. In the next stage, PVA solution and EGO are blended at different ratios and electrospun into PVA/EGO nanofibrous membranes (i.e., EGO-based repellent). In this study, a PVA concentration of 14 wt% has a positive influence on fiber formation. Furthermore, the finest nanofibers of 291 nm are presented when the voltage is 15 kV. The repellent efficacy can reach 80% in a 60-min release when the repellent is composed of a PVA/oil ratio of 90/10. To sum up, the nanofibrous membranes of essential oil exhibit good repellent efficacy against F. taiwana and significant slow-release effect, instead of adversely affecting the cell viability.Technical errors have an impact on the results of surgical lower limb revascularization. Use of ultrasound scanning or angiography on the operating table is inconvenient and, in case of angiography, carries a certain risk of radiation and contrast exposure. A simpler method of screening for errors is required. This study assessed the accuracy of a new simple hydrostatic bypass flow technique during surgical limb revascularization. In all, 885 patients were included in the retrospective study. All were treated for Chronic Limb-Threatening Ischemia (CLTI) with a femoropopliteal bypass. Preoperatively, the radiological Vascular Surgery/International Society of Cardiovascular Surgery (SVS/ISCVS) score was used to assess the complexity of the anatomical changes. The surgeon made a subjective runoff assessment for every surgery. In 267 cases, the hydrostatic bypass flow (HBF) technique was used, and, in 66 cases, a digital subtraction angiography (DSA) was used. In each case, a postoperative Doppler ultrasound (DUS) examination was performed following the HBF. Good early results were achieved in 89.46%, and 154 errors (17.4%) were detected (85 were detected on the operating table, including 57 technical errors). Independent efficacy in error detection was proven with a postoperative Doppler examination (Aera Under Curve (AUC) = 0.89; criterion mid-graft peak systolic velocity (PSV) less then 24 cm/s, p = 0.00001) and hydrostatic bypass flow (AUC = 0.71, criterion HBF less then 53 mL/min, p = 0.00001) during surgery. The hydrostatic bypass flow technique is an effective intraoperative screening method in bypass surgery. Algorithmic use of HBF, DSA if needed, and DUS postoperatively improves the outcome. HBF sufficiently reduced the need for on-table angiography.We recently demonstrated that the sympathetic nervous system can be voluntarily activated following a training program consisting of cold exposure, breathing exercises, and meditation. This resulted in profound attenuation of the systemic inflammatory response elicited by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration. Herein, we assessed whether this training program affects the plasma metabolome and if these changes are linked to the immunomodulatory effects observed. A total of 224 metabolites were identified in plasma obtained from 24 healthy male volunteers at six timepoints, of which 98 were significantly altered following LPS administration. Effects of the training program were most prominent shortly after initiation of the acquired breathing exercises but prior to LPS administration, and point towards increased activation of the Cori cycle. Elevated concentrations of lactate and pyruvate in trained individuals correlated with enhanced levels of anti-inflammatory interleukin (IL)-10. In vitro validation experiments revealed that co-incubation with lactate and pyruvate enhances IL-10 production and attenuates the release of pro-inflammatory IL-1β and IL-6 by LPS-stimulated leukocytes. Our results demonstrate that practicing the breathing exercises acquired during the training program results in increased activity of the Cori cycle. Furthermore, this work uncovers an important role of lactate and pyruvate in the anti-inflammatory phenotype observed in trained subjects.From the East Asian social and cultural perspectives and contexts, this study aimed to understand the relationships and behaviors between nursing students' sense of filial piety and their decision-making behind selecting nursing education as their major. Forty-two traditional-age nursing students (i.e., six men and 36 women) at their final year of a bachelor's degree program in nursing were invited. The findings indicated that many nursing students disliked their university major and the potential career pathway as a nursing professional, as none of them selected the major based on their choice and interest. The environmental context and family's recommendations were the major impacts to influence the decision-making process of the participants. The result also indicated that filial piety, parents' recommendations, and elderly people's suggestions were the key factors to influence the selections and decisions of university major and career development pathways. The study provided a blueprint for related staff and professionals to create and design career counselling and services for East Asian youths to enable life investment and development.Highly dimensional data generated from bacterial whole-genome sequencing is providing an unprecedented scale of information that requires an appropriate statistical analysis framework to infer biological function from populations of genomes. The application of genome-wide association study (GWAS) methods is an appropriate framework for bacterial population genome analysis that yields a list of candidate genes associated with a phenotype, but it provides an unranked measure of importance. Here, we validated a novel framework to define infection mechanism using the combination of GWAS, machine learning, and bacterial population genomics that ranked allelic variants that accurately identified disease. This approach parsed a dataset of 1.2 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and indels that resulted in an importance ranked list of associated alleles of porA in Campylobacter jejuni using spatiotemporal analysis over 30 years. We validated this approach using previously proven laboratory experimental alleles from an in vivo guinea pig abortion model. This framework, termed µPathML, defined intestinal and extraintestinal groups that have differential allelic porA variants that cause abortion. Divergent variants containing indels that defeated automated annotation were rescued using biological context and knowledge that resulted in defining rare, divergent variants that were maintained in the population over two continents and 30 years. This study defines the capability of machine learning coupled with GWAS and population genomics to simultaneously identify and rank alleles to define their role in infectious disease mechanisms.The influence of the degree of a neuromuscular block (NMB) on surgical operating conditions during laparoscopic surgery is debated controversially. The extent of abdominal distension during the time course of the NMB was assessed as a new measurement tool. In 60 patients scheduled for gynecologic laparoscopic surgery, the increase of the abdominal wall length induced by the capnoperitoneum was measured at 5 degrees of the NMB intense NMB-post-tetanic count (PTC) = 0; deep NMB-train-of-four count (TOF) = 0 and PTC = 1-5; medium NMB-PTC > 5 and TOF = 0-1; shallow NMB-TOF > 1; full recovery-train-of-four ratio TOFR > 90%. Simultaneously, the quality of operating conditions was assessed with a standardized rating scale (SRS) reaching from 1 (extremely poor conditions) to 5 (excellent conditions). Fifty patients could be included in the analysis. The abdominal wall length increased by 10-13 mm induced by the capnoperitoneum. SRS was higher during intense NMB (4.7 ± 0.5) vs. full recovery (4.5 ± 0.5) (mean ± SD; p = 0.025). Generally, an intense NMB did not increase abdominal wall length induced by capnoperitoneum. Additionally, its influence on the quality of surgical operating conditions seems to be of minor clinical relevance.The experiment studied the effect of two different fat inclusion levels (30% and 40%), NaCl contents (2.4 and 2.6%) and starter cultures (lactic acid bacteria (LAB) 6 L. curvatus/S. xylosus; LAB 8 L. sakei/S. xylosus) on the weight loss and nutritional composition of Italian-type ostrich salami. With this purpose, 8 batches of 9 salami each (n = 72) were prepared. Salami were ripened for 20 weeks weight loss was monitored throughout the experiment, while salami nutritional composition was evaluated at 10 and 20 weeks of ripening. Reducing the NaCl inclusion from 2.6% to 2.4%, the weight loss of ostrich salami was retarded by approximately 1 week, without affecting the nutritional composition of the final product. Results of the study suggested that it is feasible to produce salami with lower fat and salt contents, while ensuring satisfactory product quality.Due to the complex visual environment, such as lighting variations, shadows, and limitations of vision, the accuracy of vacant parking slot detection for the park assist system (PAS) with a standalone around view monitor (AVM) needs to be improved. To address this problem, we propose a vacant parking slot detection method based on deep learning, namely VPS-Net. VPS-Net converts the vacant parking slot detection into a two-step problem, including parking slot detection and occupancy classification. In the parking slot detection stage, we propose a parking slot detection method based on YOLOv3, which combines the classification of the parking slot with the localization of marking points so that various parking slots can be directly inferred using geometric cues. In the occupancy classification stage, we design a customized network whose size of convolution kernel and number of layers are adjusted according to the characteristics of the parking slot. Experiments show that VPS-Net can detect various vacant parking slots with a precision rate of 99.
