A high-performance voltammetric methodology was developed to achieve ultra-sensitive detection of riboflavin, employing an electrode modified by graphene oxide-covered hollow MnO2 spheres nanocomposite with high catalytic activity, large surface area, and hierarchical layered structure. Under the optimal conditions, the current responses of the oxidation peak located at -0.39 V showed a good linear relationship versus the concentration of riboflavin in the range of 1.0 nM-4.0 μM in acetate buffer (pH 5.4). The limit of detection was determined as 0.26 nM. Moreover, the proposed electrode exhibited high reproducibility (relative standard deviation of 1.7%, n = 10) and excellent stability (97.6% sensitivity within two months), which has been successfully applied to the quantification of riboflavin in complicated food matrices, with results in good accordance with those obtained by chromatography as a reference method, indicating it is an effective sensing platform for ultra-sensitive determination of riboflavin in practical applications.Avocado peel is a by-product obtained in high amounts in the food industry with no further applications despite its richness in bioactive compounds. In this context, an efficient "green" microwave assisted extraction (MAE) was optimized to maximize the extraction of bioactive polyphenols. Moreover, the phenolic composition of the developed green avocado extract was characterized by HPLC coupled to MS analysers and the potential applications for the food industry were studied assaying different bioactivities. Thus, the matrix metalloproteinases inhibition, the antioxidant capacity and the antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, yeast and mold were tested. The results pointed out both, high matrix metalloproteinases inhibitory capacity and antioxidant activity of avocado peel MAE extract. These findings suggest the potential food industry applications of this extract as natural food preservative, functional food ingredient or nutraceuticals with antioxidant and anti-aging activities. The formations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) in barbecued meatballs formulated with different animal fats [beef intermuscular and/or sheep tail (ST)] were investigated. Meatballs were also analyzed in terms of some qualitative and quantitative properties. From perspective of nutrition, meatballs formulated with ST fat at level 10% contained the highest ratios of linoleic acid (2.29%), ∑PUFA (2.52%), and ∑PUFA/∑SFA (0.05). Animal fat type had no significant effect on total HAAs amount of the samples and total HAAs amount was ranged between 1.35 and 2.91 ng/g. On the other hand, the usage of different animal fat significantly affected amount of BaP and PAH4, and the levels of BaP and PAH4 were ranged between 2.33-4.30 and 8.41-15.48 ng/g, respectively. From perspective of health risk, it can be noted that the meatballs formulated with ST fat at level 10% are more risky due to their total amounts of food toxicants. The sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicas, is an important economic species with high nutritive value. In recent years, driven by significant market demand, the sea cucumber breeding industry has developed rapidly. Body color and number of papillae are important factors that determine the value and price of sea cucumbers. In this study, metabolite profiling of four sea cucumber varieties (green, white, purple and spiny) was performed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) combined with multivariate analysis. Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) clearly discriminated the body wall metabolites of four sea cucumber varieties. Differential metabolites included fatty acids, phospholipids, and sugars. KEGG metabolic pathway analysis revealed that carbohydrate, protein, and phospholipid metabolism were highly conserved among the varieties. These results provide a comprehensive insight into differences in the metabolite profile of four A. japonicus varieties and a deeper understanding of sea cucumber varieties breeding.

Salvage transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) are associated with poor prognosis, especially in patients with Child-Pugh C cirrhosis. Since preemptive TIPS improved prophylaxis of variceal bleeding in those patients, recourse to salvage TIPS may now affect patients with a better prognosis.

To assess the impact of the preemptive TIPS policy on outcomes after salvage TIPS placement.

We conducted a retrospective monocentric study on cirrhotic patients undergoing salvage TIPS with polytetrafluoroethylene-covered stents from 2002 to 2017 (period 1 until February 2011; period 2 after the preemptive TIPS policy in March 2011). The primary endpoint was one-year transplant-free survival.

We included 106 patients (period 1/2 = 53/53 patients, male gender 82%, age 54 ± 9 years, alcoholic cirrhosis 70%, Child-Pugh score B/C 94%). One-year transplant-free survival was 46.0% during period 1 compared to 40.2% during period 2 (p = 0.65). Amongst 61 patients with history of variceal bleeding, 32 (52.5%) had an inadequate secondary prophylaxis, including 19 (59.4%) with a previous indication of preemptive TIPS. One-year transplant-free survival was 33.2% if inadequate secondary prophylaxis vs 65.2% if adequate (p = 0.008). Independent factors associated with survival were a lower Child-Pugh or MELD score, infection, failure to control bleeding, and hepatic encephalopathy after TIPS.

Prognosis after salvage TIPS remained poor in our series. Optimizing secondary prophylaxis, including preemptive TIPS placement, should be the main concern to improve prognosis.

Amphipods are important model organisms in environmental toxicology. Despite this, field monitoring of male fertility in invertebrates has rarely been used in monitoring programs. The aim of this study was to compare sperm quality/quantity in an amphipod collected at six UK locations with differing water quality. Due to low sperm counts and an observed lack of relationship between sperm count and weight in amphipods collected from a nationally protected conservation area (Langstone Harbour, England), we also compared datasets from this site over a decade to determine the temporal significance of this finding. One collection to evaluate a female reproductive endpoint was also performed at this site. Interestingly, this harbour consistently presented some of the lowest sperm counts comparable to highly industrial sites and low eggs number from females. Amphipods collected from all the sites, except from Langstone Harbour, presented strong positive correlations between sperm count and weight. Given Langstone Harbour has several international and national protected statutes primarily for marine life and birds, our results indicate that E. marinus, one important food component for wading birds, might be impacted by unknown reproductive stressors. These unknown stressors maybe related to agricultural runoff, leachate from historical landfills and effluent from storm water overflows. This study highlights the importance of exploring new reproductive endpoints such as sperm quantity/quality in marine monitoring programs.Fluoride has been found to cause detrimental effects on fish gills. Despite essential roles in various metabolism activities, whether and how miRNAs participate in the course of toxicity caused by fluoride in gills is still unclear. In this study, male zebrafish were exposed to 0, 20, 40 mg/L fluoride for 60 days to study the underlying osmotic regulatory mechanism by determining the influences of fluoride on the miRNAs and regulated genes in gills. mRNAs were isolated from the gills and the expression profiles were analyzed by using Illumina Hiseq 2500 platforms. Expressions of 7 differentially miRNAs and some related-genes in gills were validated by qRT-PCR. The results showed that miRNAs expressions were notably altered by fluoride. A total of 584 and 327 miRNAs were remarkably changed after 20 and 40 mg/L fluoride exposure, of which 322 were increased and 262 were decreased in 20 mg/L fluoride group, whereas 219 were elevated and 108 were reduced in 40 mg/L fluoride group. The differentially expressive miRNAs confirmed by qRT-PCR were consistent with micro-assay data. Cluster of Orthologous Groups of proteins (COG) function classification showed that the target genes of differentially expressive miRNAs are mainly related to signal transduction mechanisms, replication, transcription, inorganic ion transport and metabolism, repair and recombination, and energy formation and transformation. PRT4165 supplier In addition, fluoride disturbed the expressions of target genes involved in the osmoregulation of the gill in the fluoride-exposed zebrafish, such as the increased expressions of OSTF1 and the decreased expressions of Na+-K+-ATPase, CFTR, and AQP-3, which provides a possibility that miRNAs regulation induced by fluoride has an effects on osmotic regulation, providing new hints to the osmotic regulatory mechanism of the toxicity caused by fluoride in zebrafish, and distinguishes new biomarkers of miRNAs for fluoride toxicity.

Mitral insufficiency is a common valve disease with a prevalence of 2% and increases after the age of 65. This is the second valvulopathy operated after aortic stenosis. The surgical management of mitral insufficiency has been completely changed in recent years. The mitral valvular replacement with was the gold standard; is currently preceded by conservative surgery thanks to the emergence of reproducible and durable surgical techniques. The aim of our study is to highlight the place of Neogortex in the treatment of mitral valvular prolapse.

This is a retrospective study that includes 6 adult patients operated on for mitral insufficiency by prolapse of the large valve between October 2016 and June 2018 in the Cardiovascular Surgery Department A of the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, Morocco.

We collected 6 patients. The average age is 56 years. The clinical presentation was made of dyspnea in the 6 patients. On the echocardiographic level, all patients had mitral insufficiency due to prolapse of the large mitral valve in 2 patients and a restriction of the play of the valve by shortening of the ropes in 2 patients. The 6 patients were operated. The technique was the installation of a prosthetic ring with neogortex fixation between the free edge and the abutment and a tricuspid plasty type Devega. The operative sequences were simple.

Mitral valve repair gives satisfactory results in terms of survival and symptomatic improvement with a low operative risk.

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) includes disorders caused by compression of the neurovascular structures in the upper thoracic outlet (Roos and Owens, 1996 [1]; Bürger, 2014; Curuk, 2020 [3]). Depending on the compressed structure, it is categorized into neurological, arterial and venous TOS. SAPHO syndrome (synovitis-acne-pustulosis-hyperostosis-osteitis syndrome) is a rare chronic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology. With its typical involvement of sternoclavicular joint and clavicle, complication due to hyperostosis in this region, leading to thrombosis of the subclavian vein have been reported in some cases of SAPHO syndrome. Between 2015 and 2019 488 patients, suffering from neurological, vascular or combined TOS presented at our department. Depending on clinical and diagnostic results surgical therapy was performed in 175 cases via the transaxillary approach, including complete first rib and/or cervical rib resection, neurolysis of plexus brachialis, thoracic sympathectomy and vascular reconstruction if indicated (Curuk, 2020).
