Burn survivors may be at increased risk for suicide due to the nature of their injury and psychiatric comorbidities. The purpose of this review is to assess the evidence as to the prevalence of suicidal ideations and behaviors (attempts and completed suicides) in burn survivors as well as evaluate risk and protective factors. PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Cochrane, PsycINFO, and Web Science databases were searched using search terms regarding suicide, suicidality, and burn. Fourteen full-text manuscripts and two published abstracts were included in the review. Overall, burn survivors demonstrate elevated suicidal ideations and a higher lifetime prevalence of suicide attempts compared to the general population. There is mixed evidence as to rates of completed suicide postburn injury, though rates appear to be relatively low. Risk factors include pain at discharge, perceived level of disfigurement, premorbid psychiatric comorbidities, and past suicide attempts. Results of this systematic review shed light on the scarcity of data on rates of suicidality among burn survivors, which is surprising given the multiple risk factors burn survivors possess including chronic pain, sleep disturbances, history of substance abuse, posttraumatic stress disorder, social isolation, and depression which are linked to suicidality in the general population. Suicide risk screening should be included as an integral part of burn survivors' care, and more research is needed to better understand the magnitude of this phenomenon and offer targeted interventions to vulnerable individuals.

To analyze TNXB gene status and to clinically evaluate the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome phenotype in a large cohort of Argentine congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) patients to assess the prevalence of this condition in our population.

TNXB-gene analysis was performed in 66 non-related CAH patients that were carriers of the CYP21A2 gene deletion. A molecular strategy based on Multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification and Sanger sequencing analysis was developed allowing for the detection of different, previously described TNXA/TNXB chimeras, named CH1, CH2, and CH3.

TNXA/TNXB CH1 was found in 41%, CH2 in 29% and CH3 in 1.5% of non-related alleles carrying the CYP21A2 deletion. Thus, overall 71% of alleles were found to carry a contiguous gene deletion. 67% of patients analyzed had a monoallelic and 6% a biallelic form. All patients with the biallelic form had severe skin hyperextensibility and generalized joint hypermobility.

Based on the high frequency of TNXB alterations in CYP21A2-deletion carrier alleles found, we recommend to evaluate TNXB status in these patients, and to assess connective tissue dysplasia including cardiologic alterations in positive cases. The number of patients undergoing cardiological evaluation should be expanded to determine the incidence of structural and functional abnormalities in this cohort.

Dual-tasking deficiencies are common in people with Huntington disease (HD) and contribute to reduced functional independence. To date, few studies have investigated the determinants of dual-tasking deficiencies in this population. The reliability of dual-tasking measures has also been poorly investigated in HD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of clinical determinants on dual-tasking performance and to determine the association of disease burden outcomes on dual-tasking performance in individuals with premanifest HD.

Thirty-six individuals with premanifest HD and 28 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited for this study. see more Participants performed 3 single-task (2 cognitive and 1 motor) and 2 dual-task assessments, comprising motor (postural stability) and cognitive (simple or complex mental arithmetic) components. We assessed the effectiveness of plasma jet treatment in altering the expression of genes involved in wound healing in a prospective longitudinal observational animal study. Six male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 350 g were used, and burn wounds were made by applying a preheated brass comb (100°C) to the back of the rats, resulting in 4 full-thickness burn wounds separated by 3 interspaces. A total of 18 burn wounds were induced on 3 rats. One side of the burn, on each rat received plasma treatment (plasma group), while the other side did not (control group). The interspaces were subjected to the plasma jet for 2 min per day until 7 days post-wounding. Plasma treatment significantly decreased the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, an increase in the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines was observed in the plasma group. We showed that plasma jet treatment could improve burn wound healing by altering the expression of genes involved in the development of wound healing.
