In recent years, a growing chorus of researchers has argued that psychological theory is in a state of crisis Theories are rarely developed in a way that indicates an accumulation of knowledge. Paul Meehl raised this very concern more than 40 years ago. Yet in the ensuing decades, little has improved. We aim to chart a better path forward for psychological theory by revisiting Meehl's criticisms, his proposed solution, and the reasons his solution failed to meaningfully change the status of psychological theory. We argue that Meehl identified serious shortcomings in our evaluation of psychological theories and that his proposed solution would substantially strengthen theory testing. However, we also argue that Meehl failed to provide researchers with the tools necessary to construct the kinds of rigorous theories his approach required. To advance psychological theory, we must equip researchers with tools that allow them to better generate, evaluate, and develop their theories. We argue that formal theories provide this much-needed set of tools, equipping researchers with tools for thinking, evaluating explanation, enhancing measurement, informing theory development, and promoting the collaborative construction of psychological theories. The antimicrobial activity of an experimental solution containing essential oil of Lippia sidoides for denture cleaning was evaluated by (1) minimum inhibitory (MIC) and fungicidal/bactericidal concentration (MFC/MBC) tests against Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomona aeruginosa; (2) the metabolic activity of C. albicans biofilm formed on flat-bottom microplates and denture base specimens based on the reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT); and (3) scanning electron microscopy, to evaluate the fungal biofilm morphology. The solution showed antimicrobial action against the pathogens tested (C. albicans - MIC and MFC 19.53 µg ml-1, S. aureus - MIC and MBC 78.12 µg ml-1, P. aeruginosa - MIC 625 µg ml-1, MBC 2,500 µg ml-1), reduced the metabolic activity of C. albicans biofilm up to 97%, and caused cell wall damage at low concentrations (195.3-390.6 µg ml-1) and in short time periods (20 min). Therefore, the experimental solution has the potential to be used as an alternative in the prevention and treatment of denture-induced infections. There is currently a debate in political psychology about whether dogmatism and belief superiority are symmetric or asymmetric across the ideological spectrum. Toner, Leary, Asher, and Jongman-Sereno (2013) found that dogmatism was higher among conservatives than liberals, but both conservatives and liberals with extreme attitudes reported higher perceived superiority of beliefs. In the current study, we conducted a preregistered direct and conceptual replication of this previous research using a large nationally representative sample. Consistent with Toner et al.'s findings, our results showed that conservatives had higher dogmatism scores than liberals, whereas both conservative and liberal extreme attitudes were associated with higher belief superiority compared with more moderate attitudes. As in their study, we also found that whether conservative or liberal attitudes were associated with higher belief superiority was topic dependent. Contrasting Toner et al.'s findings, our results also showed that ideologically extreme individuals had higher dogmatism. We discuss implications of these results for theoretical debates in political psychology.
This study investigated whether demographic variables, risk factor presence or absence and universal newborn hearing screening (UNHS) results can be used to predict permanent childhood hearing loss (PCHL) in infants referred from screening.
Retrospective analysis of a UNHS database.
Data were extracted from the state-wide UNHS database storing details of the 613,027 infants who were born in Queensland, Australia between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2016 and participated in UNHS. This study included the 6735 children who were referred from the UNHS program for diagnostic audiology due to failing the screen in one or both ears or bypassing screening.
Factors with a significant positive association with PCHL that were incorporated into a logistic regression model were female gender, non-indigenous status, family history of PCHL, craniofacial anomalies and syndromes associated with PCHL, and a bilateral refer result on screening.
Odds of PCHL vary among infants referred for diagnostic assessment from UNHS programs. When an infant refers on the newborn hearing screen, information about their gender, indigenous status, identified risk factors and specific screening outcome can be used to predict the likelihood of a congenital PCHL diagnosis.

The influence of such formulaic disease modelling has pervaded public health policy and practice during the Covid-19 pandemic. Avadomide The critical vocabulary of epidemiology, and now popular debate, thus includes R0, the basic reproduction number of the virus, 'flattening the curve', and epidemic 'waves'. How did this happen? What are the consequences of framing and foreseeing the pandemic in these modes? Focusing on historical and contemporary disease responses, primarily in Britain, I explore the emergence of statistical modelling as a 'crisis technology', a reductive mechanism for making rapid decisions or judgments under uncertain biological constraint. I consider how Covid-19 might be configured or assembled otherwise, constituted as a more heterogeneous object of knowledge, a different and more encompassing moment of truth - not simply as a measured telos directing us to a new normal.
