To understand the changes in the activity of these enzymes further, the expression of related genes was detected. Diets supplemented with 600 or 900 mg/kg GSH significantly upregulated the genes expressions of cytosolic manganese SOD, mitochondrial manganese SOD, copper, zinc-SOD, GSH-Px, LZM, and prophenoloxidase activating factor, and significantly down regulated the expression of Toll-like receptor 1, Toll-like receptor 2, Dorsal, and the myeloid differentiation factor 88. However, a diet supplemented with 1200 mg/kg GSH decreased those positive indicators. Overall, our results demonstrated that an appropriate diet supplemented with 600 or 900 mg/kg GSH enhances antioxidant capacity and immunity, which will enhance the general health of E. Licorice is a widely used herbal medicine for the treatment of various diseases in southern Europe and parts of Asia. It has been reported that the isoliquiritin (ISL) from Glycyrrhiza root has the activity of promoting angiogenesis. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of ISL on the wound healing activity of zebrafish and its mechanism. 6-month-old zebrafish were injured in the skin (2 mm in diameter) and then treated with ISL. By measuring wound size and by histological examination, we found that ISL improved wound healing. In addition, 4-day-old zebrafish embryos of double transgenic line [Tg(fli-1EGFP)]/[Tg(mpegmCherry)] were suffered from tissue traumas and then treated with ISL. Through fluorescent microscopy, we found that ISL promoted macrophage recruitment and angiogenesis in the wound area. Through qPCR analysis, we found that ISL up-regulated the expression of genes related to inflammation and angiogenesis in zebrafish embryos. These results showed that ISL could promote inflammatory response and angiogenesis, which played key roles in promoting wound healing. Therefore, ISL can be used as a promising candidate to promote wound healing. Fermentation has been reported to improve the utilization of plant ingredients including soybean meal (SBM) by fish, but the detailed mechanism is still poorly understood. This study compared the effects of partial replacement of fish meal (FM) protein with SBM or Enterococcus faecium fermented SBM (EFSM) on the growth, antioxidant status, intestinal microbiota, morphology, and inflammatory responses in turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.). The FM-based diet was used as the control (CONT). Two experimental diets were formulated in which 45% of the FM protein was replaced with SBM or EFSM. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (7.57 ± 0.01 g) twice daily for 79 d. Inferior growth performance was observed in SBM group, however, no significant depression was observed in EFSM group compared to the CONT group. The CONT group had the highest values of lysozyme, complement component 3, total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase and catalase, followed by the EFSM group, and the lowest in SBM group. The malted that Enterococcus faecium fermentation effectively counteracted the negative effects of SBM by enhancing antioxidant capacity, suppressing inflammatory responses, and modulating gut microbiota in turbot. Hemocytes are immune cells in the hemolymph of invertebrates that play multiple roles in response to stressors; hemocyte mortality can thus serve as an indicator of overall animal health. However, previous research has often analyzed hemolymph samples pooled from several individuals, which precludes tracking individual responses to stressors over time. The ability to track individuals is important, however, because large inter-individual variation in response to stressors can confound the interpretation of pooled samples. Here, we describe protocols for analysis of inter- and intra-individual variability in hemocyte mortality across repeated hemolymph samples of California mussels, Mytilus californianus, free from typical abiotic stressors. To assess individual variability in hemocyte mortality with serial sampling, we created four groups of 15 mussels each that were repeatedly sampled four times at baseline (time zero) and three subsequent times separated by either 24, 48, 72, or 168 h. Hemocyte mortality was assessed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) of cells stained with propidium iodide. Our study demonstrates that hemolymph can be repeatedly sampled from individual mussels without mortality; however, there is substantial inter- and intra-individual variability in hemocyte mortality through time that is partially dependent on the sampling interval. Across repeated samples, individual mussels' hemocyte mortality had, on average, a range of ~6% and a standard deviation of ~3%, which was minimized with sampling periods ≥72 h apart. Due to this intra-individual variability, obtaining ≥2 samples from a specimen will more accurately establish an individual's baseline. Pooled-sample means were similar to individual-sample means; however, pooled samples masked the individual variation in each group. Overall, these data lay the foundation for future work exploring individual mussels' temporal responses to various stressors on a cellular level. BACKGROUND Randomized clinical trials demonstrated the efficacy and safety of apixaban in preventing stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). However, data on patients with low creatinine clearance (CCr), especially CCr 15-29 mL/min, are limited. METHODS The J-ELD AF Registry is a large-scale, multicenter prospective observational study of Japanese nonvalvular AF patients aged ≥75 years taking on-label dose (standard dose of 5 mg bid or reduced dose of 2.5 mg bid) of apixaban. The entire cohort (3,015 patients from 110 institutions) was divided into 3 CCr subgroups CCr ≥50 mL/min (n = 1,165, 38.6%), CCr 30-49 mL/min (n = 1,395, 46.3%), and CCr 15-29 mL/min (n = 455, 15.1%). RESULTS The event incidence rates (/100 person-years) were 1.76, 1.39, and 1.67 for stroke or systemic embolism (log rank P = .762); 1.39, 1.93, and 3.13 for bleeding requiring hospitalization (log rank P = .159); 1.75, 2.76, and 7.87 for total deaths (log rank P  less then  .001); and 0.46, 0.84, and 2.62 for cardiovascular deaths (log rank P  less then  .001), respectively. After adjusting for confounders by Cox regression analysis, CCr 15-29 was an independent risk for total death and cardiovascular death but not for stroke or systemic embolism, or bleeding requiring hospitalization. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of events in each CCr value group was comparable for stroke or systemic embolism and bleeding requiring hospitalization, and significantly higher for total deaths and cardiovascular deaths only in the CCr 15- to 29-mL/min group, in Japanese nonvalvular AF patients aged ≥75 years. BACKGROUND Studies assessing the impact of sleep restriction (SR) on blood pressure (BP) are limited by short study length, extreme SR ( less then 4 hours a night), and lack of attention to psychological distress as a possible mediator. METHODS A community-based cohort was assembled with 237 women (age 34.1 ± 13.5 years; body mass index 25.4 ± 5.4 kg/m2), and a randomized, crossover, intervention study was conducted in 41 women (24 completed age 30.2 ± 6.5 years; body mass index 24.3 ± 2.8 kg/m2) to determine the causal effect of SR on BP. Sleep was maintained as usual (HS) or reduced by 1.5 hours a night (SR) for 6 weeks. In the cohort, associations between sleep and psychosocial factors were evaluated using multivariable models adjusted for demographic and clinical confounders. In the intervention study, in-office BP was measured weekly; ambulatory BP was measured at end point. Psychological factors were assessed at baseline and end point. Mixed-model analyses with total sleep time (TST, main predictor), week and fraction of time spent in physical activity (covariates), and subject (random effect) were performed. RESULTS Among the community cohort, higher perceived stress, stressful events and distress, and lower resilience were associated with shorter sleep, worse sleep quality, and greater insomnia symptoms (P  less then  .05). In the intervention, systolic BP increased as TST decreased (TST × week interaction, [coefficient ± standard error] -0.0097 ± 0.0046, P = .036). Wake ambulatory diastolic blood pressure (-0.059 ± 0.022, P = .021) and mean arterial pressure (-0.067 ± 0.023, P = .018) were higher after SR versus HS. Psychological distress variables were not affected by TST and did not mediate the effects of SR on BP. link3 CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that SR influences CVD risk in women via mechanisms independent of psychological stressors. A passing maneuver allows drivers to maintain their desired speed on two-lane highways. However, it entails a high risk of collision with vehicles travelling in the opposite direction. Investigating drivers' behavior while performing passing maneuvers could provide helpful information on the factors that influence this process. Driving simulators have become important tools for driving behavior research studies as they are safe, facilitate the controlled use of experimental variables, and generate detailed output data. It remains to be seen whether simulator results can be considered representative of real-life driving conditions. With respect to passing maneuvers, no study has made a comprehensive and direct comparison between drivers' passing behavior in the field and driver behavior observed in a simulated environment. In this validation study, a fixed-base interactive simulator was used to collect data from fifty-four participants (eighteen Iranians and thirty-six Italians) involved in several traffic scenarios on a two-lane rural highway segment (obtained by varying the speed of opposing vehicles, lead vehicles and headways in the opposite direction).
