This study aimed to investigate the effects of particle size reduction and dispersants on the dissolution and bioavailability of ginsenosides in ginseng. Fine ginseng powder (FGP), ultrafine ginseng powder (UGP), and ultrafine ginseng powder with β-cyclodextrin as the dispersant (UGPD) were prepared using a planetary ball mill from coarse ginseng powder (CGP, as the control). The particle size, morphology, hydration, thermal properties, and in vitro dissolution behavior of ginseng powders were characterized. The relative oral bioavailability of ginsenosides (9 protopanaxadiol (PPD)-type and 7 protopanaxatriol (PPT)-type) was determined in a rat model. Both UGP and UGPD displayed improved physiochemical properties (e.g. reduced particle size, increased hydration and thermal properties). The total in vitro dissolution of ginsenosides from UGPD was ∼17.2% higher than that from CGP; in contrast, UGP did not differ from CGP. More importantly, the in vivo pharmacokinetic study showed that the relative bioavailability of a total of 16 ginsenosides in UGPD was 180.1 ± 9.9% (CGP set as 100%), which was significantly greater than that in FGP and UGP. This suggested that dispersants were essential for preserving the benefits of ultrafine milling by preventing ultra-pulverization induced agglomeration. In particular, PPD-type ginsenosides showed similar deglycosylation trends in in vitro and in vivo experiments; in contrast, the deglycosylation states of PPT-type ginsenosides varied, which might be attributed to the relatively low abundance, glycosylation linkage, and potential involvement of the gut microbiota metabolism. A population-based study was performed to compare vitiligo patients (

 = 20,851) with age-, sex- and ethnicity-matched control subjects (

 = 102,475) regarding the incidence of new-onset and the prevalence of preexisting CD. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by multivariable Cox regression and logistic regression, respectively.

The incidence rate of new-onset CD was evaluated at 3.6 (95% CI, 2.7-4.9) cases per 10,000 person-years (PY) in patients with vitiligo and 2.4 (95% CI, 2.0-2.9) cases per 10,000 PY in controls. Patients with vitiligo experienced an elevated risk of CD (fully adjusted HR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.10-2.34;

 = 0.015). Congruently, a history of preexisting CD predicted elevated odds of having subsequent vitiligo (fully adjusted OR, 1.49; 95% CI, 1.15-1.93;

 = 0.002). Compared to other patients with vitiligo, those with vitiligo and comorbid CD were older and had a higher prevalence of diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension but a comparable all-cause mortality rate.

The current study depicts a robust bidirectional association between vitiligo and CD. This knowledge is of clinical implication for physicians managing patients with both conditions. The diagnostic threshold for CD should be lowered in vitiligo patients with compatible symptoms.

Among them aliphatic and indolic glucosinolates (IGs) are usually highly abundant in the species from Brassicaceae family. The exception from this trend is constituted by species representing a subclade of Camelineae tribe, including Capsella and Camelina genera, which have reduced capacity to produce and metabolize IGs. Our study addresses contribution of specific glucosinolate-related MYB transcription factors to this unprecedented backward evolution of IG biosynthesis. To this end we performed phylogenomic and functional studies of respective MYB proteins. Obtained results revealed weakened conservation of glucosinolate-related MYB transcription factors, including loss of functional MYB34 protein, in the investigated species. We showed that introduction of functional MYB34 from Arabidopsis thaliana partially restores IG biosynthesis in Capsella rubella indicating that loss of this transcription factor contributes to the backward evolution of this metabolic pathway. Finally, we performed analysis of the impact of particular myb mutations on the feedback loop in IG biosynthesis, which drives auxin overproduction, metabolic dysregulation and strong growth retardation caused by mutations in IG biosynthetic genes. This uncovered unique function of MYB34 among IG-related MYBs in this feedback regulation and consequently in IG conservation in Brassicaceae plants.

We seek to inform radiotherapy (RT) delivery for adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck (ACC) by evaluating RT techniques and recurrence patterns.

We identified patients with ACC treated with curative-intent RT from 2005 to 2021. Imaging was reviewed to determine local recurrence (LR).

Ninety-one patients were included. The 5-year LR risk was 12.2% (6.6-22.7). One patient each experienced a marginal and out-of-field recurrence. Patients receiving >60 Gy postoperatively had a 5-year LR risk of 0% compared to 10.7% (4.2-27.2) with ≤60 Gy. Those receiving 70 and <70 Gy definitively had a 5-year LR risk of 15.2% (2.5-91.6) and 33.3% (6.7-100.0), respectively. No patients had regional nodal failure.

Modern, conformal RT for ACC results in low rates of LR. Doses >60 and 70 Gy may improve control in the postoperative and definitive settings, respectively. Elective nodal treatment can be omitted in well-selected patients.

The purpose of the study was to explore the experiences of an individual navigating life in the first year after stroke, with attention to the influence of health professionals on adjustment.

In-depth interviews were completed at regular intervals with an individual in rural Australia. This longitudinal approach supported the exploration of views over time. Interview transcripts were coded and analysed using strategies consistent with constructivist grounded theory methods. Findings are presented as an instrumental case study.

This study investigates the protein/PA (PPA) interaction and its effects on the structural, physicochemical, and functional properties of the system. This work particularly focused on the ability of PAs as a subgroup of phenolic compounds (PC) on the modification of proteins. Different aspects including the influence of structure affinity relationship and molecular weight of PA on the protein interaction have been discussed in this review. The physicochemical properties of PPA change mainly due to the change of hydrophilic/hydrophobic parts and/or the formation of some covalent and non-covalent interactions.
