During inflammation or tissue injury, pro-inflammatory mediators attract migratory monocytes to inflammatory sites and monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation occurs to activate macrophages. We report here that PAQR11, a member of the progesterone and AdipoQ receptor family, regulates monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation in vitro and in vivo. Paqr11 gene was highly induced during monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation. Knockdown or deletion of Paqr11 inhibited monocyte differentiation but had little effect on macrophage polarization. Mechanistically, PAQR11 promoted cell survival as apoptosis was increased by Paqr11 knockdown or deletion. Activation of the MAPK signalling pathway was involved in the regulatory role of PAQR11 on monocyte differentiation and cell survival. C/EBPβ regulated the expression of Paqr11 at the transcriptional level. In mice, deletion of Paqr11 gene alleviated progression of collagen-induced rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, these results provide strong evidence that PAQR11 has a function in monocyte-to-macrophage differentiation and such function is related to autoimmune disease in vivo.

We compared preschool age children born very preterm with term-born controls to (1) understand the association between very preterm birth and community participation, (2) determine if motor impairment or social risk affect participation differently between groups, and (3) understand environmental barriers and supports to participation for parents.

Forty-eight children born very preterm (<30wks' gestation; 22 males, 26 females) and 96 controls (47 males, 49 females) were assessed at 4 to 5 years' corrected age for community participation using the Young Children's Participation and Environment Measure. Motor skills were assessed using the Movement Assessment Battery for Children, Second Edition and the Little Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire.

Children born very preterm participated less frequently than term-born children (difference in means=-0.28, 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.54 to -0.03, p=0.029). Social risk was associated with lower frequency (interaction p<0.001) and involvement (interaction p=0.05) in community activities for children in the very preterm group only. Parents of children born very preterm perceived more barriers (odds ratio=4.32, 95% CI 1.46-12.77, p=0.008) and environmental factors to be less supportive of participation than parents of controls (difference in medians=-6.21, 95% CI -11.42 to -1.00, p=0.02).

Previously, compassion has been found to protect against depressive symptoms, while emotional adversities in childhood are suggested to increase inflammatory responses. The current study investigated (a) whether emotional family environment in childhood predicts levels of such cytokines in adulthood that are previously found to be elevated in depression (interleukin [IL]-2, IL-6, IL-1b, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, interferon-gamma [IFN-γ], and tumor necrosis factor alpha [TNF-α]) and (b) whether these associations are modified by compassion in adulthood.

The participants (N=1,198-1,523) came from the prospective population-based Young Finns data. Emotional family environment and parental socioeconomic factors were evaluated in 1980; participants' compassion in 2001; and participants' cytokine levels and adulthood covariates in 2007.

Risky emotional family environment in childhood predicted higher levels of IL-2, IL-6, IFN-γ, and TNF-α in adulthood. Additionally, there were significant interaction effects between compassion and emotional risk in childhood, when predicting IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-α. Specifically, individuals who grew up in a risky emotional family environment had on average higher levels of IL-2, IL-6, and TNF-α in adulthood when combined with low compassion.

To explore the associations of duration and quality of sleep during pregnancy with preterm birth and small for gestational age (SGA).

A prospective study was carried out on 1082 healthy women with singleton pregnancies from Chengdu, China. Self-report questionnaires, including duration and quality of sleep and other information, were administered at 8-12, 24-28, and 32-36weeks of pregnancy. Data on gestational age and weight and length of the neonates were recorded after delivery. After controlling the potential confounders, a multivariable logistic regression model was performed to evaluate whether duration and quality of sleep were associated with preterm birth and SGA.

Participants with short duration of sleep during the third trimester were more likely to report preterm birth (odds ratio [OR] 2.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26-4.81) and SGA (OR 2.67, 95% CI 1.18-6.54). Participants with poor quality of sleep during the third trimester were at high risk for preterm birth (OR 2.26, 95% CI 1.29-5.84) and SGA (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.19-5.38).

Growing interest in this phenomenon has fueled recent physiological, biochemical, and genomic insights into the mechanistic basis of desiccation tolerance. Although, desiccation tolerance is often viewed as binary and monolithic, substantial variation exists in the phenotype and underlying mechanisms across diverse lineages, heterogeneous populations, and throughout the development of individual plants. Most studies have focused on conserved responses in a subset desiccation-tolerant plants under laboratory conditions. Consequently, the variability and natural diversity of desiccation-tolerant phenotypes remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we discuss the natural variation in desiccation tolerance and argue that leveraging this diversity can improve our mechanistic understanding of desiccation tolerance. We summarize information collected from ~600 desiccation-tolerant land plants and discuss the taxonomic distribution and physiology of desiccation responses. We point out the need to quantify natural diversity of desiccation tolerance on three scales variation across divergent lineages, intraspecific variation across populations, and variation across tissues and life stages of an individual plant. Drawing on all 3,807 publications in Scopus that contain the word "intersectionality" in the title, abstract, or keywords, we map the spread of intersectionality in academia through its citations. Network analysis reveals the contours of its diffusion among the 6,098 scholars in our data set, while automated text analysis, manual coding, and the close reading of publications reveal how the application and interpretation of intersectional thinking has evolved over time and space. We find that the diffusion network exhibits communities that are not well demarcated by either discipline or geography. Communities form around one or a few highly referenced scholars who introduce intersectionality to new audiences while reinterpreting it in a way that speaks to their research interests.
