The efficacy of a surgical skills curriculum was assessed for third-year medical students focused on suturing training on soft embalmed cadavers, which simulate natural tissue more effectively for surgical procedures than traditionally preserved cadavers or surgical practice pads.

A retrospective cohort study compared pre- and post-survey results at a premier, accredited, nationally ranked academic medical center. Study participants were third-year medical students completing their required surgical clerkship rotation who participated in suturing sessions on both synthetic suture practice pads and soft-embalmed cadavers prior to beginning their operating room experience.

A total of 40 participants were included, with slightly more male participants. The majority of participants (52%) were interested in pursuing a non-surgical career. After participating in Clinical Anatomy Mentorship Program (CAMP), participants felt significantly more confident in their ability to suture in the operating room (median 4 [3-4] vs. 2 [1-3], p < 0.001); in their knowledge of basic suturing supplies and instruments (median 4 [4-4] vs. 3 [2-3], p < 0.001); and in their ability to determine when different suture techniques are appropriate in the operating room (median 3 [3-4] vs. 1 [1-2], p < 0.001). Participants felt more confident in their ability to suture in the operating room after their experience suturing on soft-embalmed cadavers compared to suture practice pads (median 5 [4-5] vs. 4 [4-4], p = 0.002).

Medical students' confidence in suturing skills and in the knowledge of important characteristics of suturing practice was improved significantly after a suture training session on soft-embalmed cadavers.

Among operatively treated pediatric forearm fractures, many different fixation constructs are described. The goal of this study was to define the biomechanical properties of a double stacked 1/3 tubular plate construct used by the senior author for some fractures and to review available literature regarding the use of stacked plates.

Biomechanical testing was performed by 4-point bending of three different plate constructs 1/3 tubular plate, stacked 1/3 tubular plates, and 2.7 mm LC-DCP plate. Five test specimens were evaluated for each of the three plate constructs. From stress-strain curves, flexural stiffness (N/mm), force to cause plastic deformation (N), and force to cause 10° bend (N) were calculated and compared using standard t-test statistics.

Key outcome parameter means (± SD) for the three plate constructs (1/3 tubular plate, stacked 1/3 tubular plates, and 2.7 mm LC-DCP plate) were reported respectively as follows flexural stiffness (55.4 ± 3.5 N/mm, 131.7 ± 3.5 N/mm, 113.3 ± 12.1 N/mm), force to cause plastic deformation (113.6 ± 11.0 N, 242.1 ± 13.0 N, 192.2 ± 17.9 N), and force to cause a 10° bend (140.0 ± 8.4 N, 299.4 ± 14.1 N, 265.5 ± 21.2 N). Mean values of all three measures were significantly larger for the stacked 1/3 tubular plates than for the other plate constructs.

The stacked 1/3 tubular plate construct was biomechanically superior to the other plate constructs tested. Stacked plating significantly improved stiffness of the fracture fixation construct supporting the use of this technique in selected trauma cases.

Collaborative puzzle games are interactive activities that can be played to foster the collaboration and verbal-communication skills of children with ASD. In this paper, we have designed an intelligent agent that can play collaborative puzzle games with children and verbally communicate with them as if it is another human player. Furthermore, this intelligent agent is also able to automatically measure children's task-performance and verbal-communication behaviors throughout game play. Two preliminary studies were conducted with children with ASD to evaluate the feasibility and performance of the intelligent agent. Results of Study I demonstrated the intelligent agent's ability to play games and communicate with children within the game-playing domain. Results of Study II indicated its potential to measure the communication and collaboration skills of human users.

given the lack of information about monoclonal gammopathies, our primary study outcome was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and biochemical profiles of monoclonal gammopathies in the Souss-Massa region, in southern Morocco.

we conducted a retrospective study, by selecting only complete medical records. We used records of patients diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy at the local oncology center during a period of over 10 years.

one hundred and seventeen patients were included in the study, with a high male predominance (65%) and a male/female sex-ratio of 1.85. The average age of our study population was 61.44 (ET 14.54) years. Diagnoses (based on frequency) included multiple myeloma 82.0% (n=96), solitary plasmacytoma 8.5% (n=10), monoclonal gammopathies of undetermined significance 2.6% (n=3), lymphoma 2.5% (n=3), secondary plasma cell leukaemia 1.7% (n=2), Waldenström´s disease 1.7%(n=2) and chronic lymphoid leukemia (n=1). The isotype distribution was as follows IgG Kappa 33.7% (n=28), IgG lambda 21.7% (n=18), IgA Kappa 12.0% (n=10), IgA lambda 7.2% (n=6), IgM kappa 3.6% (n=3), and IgD lambda 2.4% (n=2). Biconal peak was reached in two cases, with a percentage of 2.4%.

diagnostic delay was observed compared to international studies due to the unavailability of electrophoresis in the care structures.

Most patients had their diagnosis done during childhood due to the frequent association to cardiac anomalies that speak for themselves earlier in life. Multiple spleens, cardiac defect and vascular malformation of the inferior vena cava with azygos or hemiazygos continuation are the most frequent observed malformations. Our patient was one this rarest adulthood incidental diagnosis, who presented in the emergency department for nephritic colic, and while imaging for this, multiples spleens and other visceral malformations were diagnosed. Hopefully, cardiac ultrasound hadn't showed any cardiac malformation and the patient was discharged aware of this condition. Through this publication we report the possible incidental diagnosis of polysplenia condition and highlight the fact that people with such important malformation can lead a normal life, and only awareness should be given for future surgeries, instrumental treatment or else.Child health services remain one of the most cost-effective strategies in reducing child mortality which is still disturbingly high in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Efforts by governments and other stakeholders in response to the COVID-19 pandemic have inadvertently disrupted the provision of other essential health services including those focusing on children. This comes at the backdrop of the World Health Organization´s guidelines for countries to sustain priority services while fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. Underpinned by the Socio-Ecological Model (SEM), we propose population-based interventions which could help in sustaining child health services in the midst of COVID-19 in SSA. At the intrapersonal and interpersonal levels, educating mothers during routine community outreach services, during child welfare clinics, and in church/mosques could be useful. Education and sensitization of male partners could also be an important intervention. At the institutional and community levels, we recommend the allocation of more funds to other essential health services including child health services. The training and deployment of more general nurses, community health nurses/officers, and public health officers is imperative. The provision and adherence to COVID-19 preventive protocols at health facilities are also recommended at these levels. At the public policy level, insurance and tax relief packages for frontline professionals providing child health services and micro-credit facilities at reduced interest rates for women could be implemented towards sustaining the utilisation of child health services.Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an inherited condition that is characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentation and hamartomatous polyposis in the gastrointestinal tract. It increases significantly the risk for developing of several cancers such as breast, colon, rectum, pancreas and stomach. Solitary Peutz-Jeghers polyp is defined as a unique hamartomatous polyp having the same histological features as Peutz-Jeghers syndrome polyps without associated intestinal polyposis, mucocutaneous pigmentation and family history of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Gastric solitary Peutz-Jeghers polyp is extremely rare. (Z)-4-Hydroxytamoxifen mw We found only 13 cases in the literature. We report a new case of solitary gastric Peutz-Jeghers polyp associated with a branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm revealed by an acute pancreatitis. Computed tomography of the abdomen found a branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm with a pedicled polypoid formation in the greater gastric curvature. Endoscopic resection was performed without complications. Histologic examination showed Peutz-Jeghers hamartomatous polyp. The risk of cancer remains unclear in this entity. Therefore, the follow-up of these patients is necessary because of the possible risk of malignancy.

there is few data on epidemiology or clinico-pathology of primary bone tumours in Ethiopia. Bone tumors often have a similar presentation and clinical approach, but they present individual characteristics that are important for treatment and prognosis. This study aimed to provide a brief overview of histopathological pattern of primary bone tumours and the distribution of specific diagnosis by age, sex and anatomic locations.

a retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2015 to October 2019 in the Department of Pathology, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University based on surgical biopsy results.

there were 335 patients; 158 (47%) had benign tumours and 177 (53%) had malignant tumours. Osteochondroma was the most common benign bone tumour with 32.3% followed by giant cell tumour 16.5%, chondroma 11% and others 40.2%. Osteosarcoma constitutes 62% of all primary malignant bone neoplasms, followed by ewing sarcoma 15.2%, chondrosarcoma 11.3%, and others 11.5%. Most age group affected by primary bone tumours were 10-29 yrs and most common locations of presentation for primary malignant bone tumours were distal femur and proximal tibia.

the present study results parallel the findings previously reported in literature and show a similar distribution of primary bone tumors as in the other developed and underdeveloped countries.
