The shear strength of the joints was determined by the brittle solder matrix, showing that the joint strength decreased with the coarsening of the δ phase in the eutectic structure.Thermoelectric generators are an excellent option for waste heat reuse. Materials for such devices have seen their thermoelectric properties improving constantly. The functioning of a generator, however, does not only depend on thermoelectric properties. Thermal and mechanical properties play a decisive role in the feasibility of any thermoelectric generator. To shed light on the properties exhibited by thermoelectric materials, we present the temperature dependent characterization of Young's modulus and coefficient of thermal expansion for Mg2Si0.3Sn0.7. Comparing undoped to Bi-doped n-type and Li-doped p-type material, we investigated the influence of doping in the relevant temperature regime and found the influences to be minor, proving similar properties for n- and p-type. We found a Young's modulus of 84 GPa for the p-type and 83 GPa for the n-type, similar to that of the undoped compound with 85 GPa. The thermal expansion coefficients of undoped, as well as n- and p-type were equally similar with values ranging from 16.5 to 17.5 × 10-6 1/K. A phase analysis was performed to further compare the two materials, finding a similar phase distribution and microstructure. Finally, using the gathered data, estimations on the possible thermally induced stresses under a temperature difference are provided to evaluate the relevance of knowing temperature dependent thermal and mechanical properties. The present work extends the examination of selective laser melting (SLM)-fabricated 15-5 PH steel with the 8%-transient-austenite-phase towards fully-reversed strain-controlled low-cycle fatigue (LCF) test. The cyclic-deformation response and microstructural evolution were investigated via in-situ neutron-diffraction measurements. SalinosporamideA The transient-austenite-phase rapidly transformed into the martensite phase in the initial cyclic-hardening stage, followed by an almost complete martensitic transformation in the cyclic-softening and steady stage. The compressive stress was much greater than the tensile stress at the same strain amplitude. The enhanced martensitic transformation associated with lower dislocation densities under compression predominantly governed such a striking tension-compression asymmetry in the SLM-built 15-5 PH.This article considers the use of additive manufacturing to produce cutting tools for various machining operations, especially turning, milling, and drilling. The right geometry and material of the tool as well as coatings applied on cutting edges are crucial as they improve the life and performance of the tool. The study described here focused on a four-flute end mill made of maraging steel 1.2709 using a Concept Laser M2 Cusing Direct Metal Laser Melting (DMLM) machine. Before the printed tool was first used, it was examined to determine its dimensional and geometric accuracy, surface roughness, and surface structure. The measurement data showed that the tool required machining, e.g., grinding, to improve its geometry because the total runout of the shank and the cutting edge radius were too high, amounting to 120 μm and 217 μm, respectively. The cutting edges were sharpened to obtain a fully functional cutting tool ready to perform milling operations. The study aimed to check the dimensional and geometric accuracy of the 3D printed milling cutter and determine the optimal machining allowance for its finishing. The tightening torque applied to a screw in a provisional restoration immediately after implant placement in a fresh extraction socket is often too low to gain sufficient preload force. Therefore, abutment screw loosening is a common complication. The aim of this study was to investigate whether it is possible to increase the preload force of a given tightening torque by anodizing parts of the implant-abutment complex. In test group 1 (TG1), only the abutment screw was anodized, in four different stages, whereas in test group 2 (TG2), the abutment and the threaded sleeve were anodized in four anodizing stages (TG2a-TG2d). The control group (CG) consisted of non-anodized components. The results were tested for normal distribution, and the components were subsequently parametrically analyzed using a linear model. Both test groups showed higher preload forces compared to the non-anodized control group. The CG obtained an average preload force of 390 N at a tightening torque of 35 Ncm. Comparable values were already obtained at a tightening torque of 20 to 30 Ncm in TG1c/D and TG2b/d. It can be concluded that anodization of abutment screws and components is an effective measure to increase the preload force of the abutment screws by a given tightening torque. The use of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in the biomedical field deserves a mindful analysis of the possible inflammatory response which could limit their use in the clinic. Despite the anti-cancer properties of Ag NPs having been widely demonstrated, there are still few studies concerning their involvement in the activation of specific inflammatory pathways. The inflammatory outcome depends on the synthetic route used in the NPs production, in which toxic reagents are employed. In this work, we compared two types of Ag NPs, obtained by two different chemical routes conventional synthesis using sodium citrate and a green protocol based on leaf extracts as a source of reduction and capping agents. A careful physicochemical characterization was carried out showing spherical and stable Ag NPs with an average size between 20 nm and 35 nm for conventional and green Ag NPs respectively. Then, we evaluated their ability to induce the activation of inflammation in Human Leukemic Monocytes (THP-1) differentiated into M0 macrophages using 1 µM and 2 µM NPs concentrations (corresponded to 0.1 µg/mL and 0.2 µg/mL respectively) and two-time points (24 h and 48 h). Our results showed a clear difference in Nuclear Factor κB (NF-κb) activation, Interleukins 6-8 (IL-6, IL-8) secretion, Tumor Necrosis Factor-α (TNF-α) and Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression exerted by the two kinds of Ag NPs. Green Ag NPs were definitely tolerated by macrophages compared to conventional Ag NPs which induced the activation of all the factors mentioned above. Subsequently, the exposure of breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) to the green Ag NPs showed that they exhibited antitumor activity like the conventional ones, but surprisingly, using the MCF-10A line (not tumoral breast cells) the green Ag NPs did not cause a significant decrease in cell viability. The field of molecular electronics is prompted by tremendous opportunities for using a single-molecule and molecular monolayers as active components in integrated circuits. Until now, a wide range of molecular devices exhibiting characteristic functions, such as diodes, transistors, switches, and memory, have been demonstrated. However, a full understanding of the crucial factors that affect charge transport through molecular electronic junctions should yet be accomplished. Remarkably, recent advances in transition voltage spectroscopy (TVS) elucidate that it can provide key quantities for probing the transport characteristics of the junctions, including, for example, the position of the frontier molecular orbital energy relative to the electrode Fermi level and the strength of the molecule-electrode interactions. These parameters are known to be highly associated with charge transport behaviors in molecular systems and can then be used in the design of molecule-based devices with rationally tuned electronic properties. This article highlights the fundamental principle of TVS and then demonstrates its major applications to study the charge transport properties of molecular electronic junctions. The use of gentamicin (GM) is limited due to its nephrotoxicity mediated by oxidative stress. This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of a flavonoid-rich extract of Sambucus nigra L. elderflower (SN) to inhibit lipoperoxidation in GM-induced nephrotoxicity. The HPLC analysis of the SN extract recorded high contents of rutin (463.2 ± 0.0 mg mL-1), epicatechin (9.0 ± 1.1 µg mL-1), and ferulic (1.5 ± 0.3 µg mL-1) and caffeic acid (3.6 ± 0.1 µg mL-1). Thirty-two Wistar male rats were randomized into four groups a control group (C) (no treatment), GM group (100 mg kg-1 bw day-1 GM), GM+SN group (100 mg kg-1 bw day-1 GM and 1 mL SN extract day-1), and SN group (1 mL SN extract day-1). Lipid peroxidation, evaluated by malondialdehyde (MDA), and antioxidant enzymes activity-superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPX)-were recorded in renal tissue after ten days of experimental treatment. The MDA level was significantly higher in the GM group compared to the control group (p 0.05), and its action was most probably due to the ability of flavonoids (rutin, epicatechin) and ferulic and caffeic acids to inhibit synthesis and neutralize reactive species, to reduce the redox-active iron pool, and to inhibit lipid peroxidation. In this study, we propose an innovative method for counteracting GM nephrotoxicity with a high efficiency and low cost, but with the disadvantage of the multifactorial environmental variability of the content of SN extracts. The CRTS I type double-block ballastless track (CRTS I TDBBT) has the advantages of convenient construction and low cost, but it has low crack resistance and the temperature field distribution of the railway on the bridge is uneven and frequently changes, so it is necessary to study the mechanical properties of the CRTS I TDBBT under the load of a temperature field. The temperature field model of the CRTS I TDBBT on the bridge is established by finite element software, the real-time temperature field of the track bed slab is brought into the coupled model as a load, and the variation laws of the temperature stress of the CRTS I TDBBT under different schemes are compared. The temperature gradient in the CRTS I TDBBT track bed slab has the largest fluctuation range, and the positive and negative temperature gradient range can reach 93.34 °C. For the temperature longitudinal stress around the sleeper block of the track bed slab, the edge is the largest; the temperature longitudinal stress is reduced by at most 5.27% after the anti-cracking diagonal bars are added. When the expansion joint is added, the temperature stress can be reduced by up to 80.29%. The fluctuation range of the temperature gradient of the track bed is basically consistent with the fluctuation range of the local air temperature. The huge temperature difference leads to the occurrence of cracks in the track structure, and cracks are more likely to occur at the corners of the sleeper block. The addition of both anti-crack diagonal bars and expansion joints has an anti-crack effect, but the effect of adding expansion joints is better.A polymer network (PN) can sustain the uniform lying helix (ULH) texture in a binary cholesteric liquid crystal (LC) comprising a calamitic LC and a bimesogenic LC dimer. Upon copolymerization of a bifunctional monomer with a trifunctional monomer at a concentration of 5 wt% to create the desired polymer network structure, the PN-ULH was obtained with high stability and recoverability even when cycles of helical unwinding-to-rewinding processes were induced after the electrical or thermal treatment. Utilizing dielectric spectroscopy, the flexoelectric-polarization-dominated dielectric relaxation in the PN-ULH state was characterized to determine two frequency regions, f fdi results in a frequency dispersion of transmittance analogous to that of flexoelectric-polarization-dominated dielectric relaxation. The unique combination of the bimesogen-doped cholesteric LC with a stable and recoverable PN-ULH texture is thus promising for developing a frequency-modulated electro-optic device.
