While we report this to be true for the neocortex, we find no such evidence within the LHb; rather that NDNF is expressed without restriction to a particular neuronal subpopulation. These results hence indicate that molecular markers can represent broadly diverse populations of neurons on a region-to-region basis and that therefore each population as defined by molecular marker expression should be validated in each brain structure.

What is the central question of this study? The purpose of this study was to determine intra-individual reproducibility of follicular phase changes in endothelial function (flow-mediated dilatation) over two menstrual cycles in healthy, premenopausal women. What is the main finding and its importance? Phase changes in endothelial function were not consistent at the individual level across two menstrual cycles, which challenges the utility of interpreting individual responses over one cycle.

Evidence regarding the impact of menstrual phase on endothelial function is conflicting, and studies to date have examined responses only over a single cycle. It is unknown whether the observed inter-individual variability of phase changes in endothelial function reflects stable, inter-individual differences in responses to oestrogen (E

; a primary female sex hormone). The purpose of this study was to examine changes in endothelial function from the early follicular (EF; low-E

) phase to the late follicular (LF; hire was no impact of phase or cycle on FMD (P = 0.48 and P = 0.65, respectively). The phase change in FMD in cycle 1 did not predict the phase change in cycle 2 (r = 0.03, P = 0.92). Using threshold-based classification (2 × typical error threshold), four of 14 participants (29%) exhibited directionally consistent phase changes in FMD across cycles. Oestrogen was not correlated between cycles, and this might have contributed to variability in the FMD response. The intra-individual variability in follicular fluctuation in FMD between menstrual cycles challenges the utility of interpreting individual responses to phase over a single menstrual cycle.

What is the topic of this review? We have conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis on the current evidence for the effect of heat therapy on blood pressure and vascular function. What advances does it highlight? We found that heat therapy reduced mean arterial, systolic and diastolic blood pressure. We also observed that heat therapy improved vascular function, as assessed via brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation. Our results suggest that heat therapy is a promising therapeutic tool that should be optimized further, via mode and dose, for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Lifelong sauna exposure is associated with reduced cardiovascular disease risk. Recent studies have investigated the effect of heat therapy on markers of cardiovascular health. We aimed to conduct a systematic review with meta-analysis to determine the effects of heat therapy on blood pressure and indices of vascular function in healthy and clinical populations. Four databases were searched uct of heat therapy on mean arterial pressure and flow-mediated dilatation. Heat therapy is an effective therapeutic tool to reduce blood pressure and improve macrovascular function. Future research should aim to optimize heat therapy, including the mode and dose, for the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease. The present study was conducted to investigate the effects of the activator factor of the WNT pathway, chir98014, leading to the in vitro sheep oocyte maturation medium, on the cumulus cell development, different nuclear maturation stages and the following process of embryonic development. Experiments included (a) addition of different concentrations (0, 0.1, 0.5, 1 µm) of chir98014 to the maturation medium and evaluation of the cumulus cell expansion, (b) addition of different concentrations of chir98014 to the maturation medium and investigation of different nuclear maturation stages, (c) addition of different concentrations of chir98014 to the maturation medium and examination of the subsequent embryonic maturation process and (d) addition of different concentrations of chir98014 to the embryonic development culture medium (the first 48 hr) and investigation of the subsequent embryonic development process. The extracted data were analysed using the SPSS software, considering the significance level of p less then .05 and making the mean comparisons. The results showed that the addition of the 0.1 µM concentration of chir98014 to the maturation medium had no significant effects on the oocyte maturation and embryo development post-fertilization but it enhanced the Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) expansion. In the fourth experiment, the low concentration of chir98014 in the embryo culture media improved the embryo development process, whereas the high one had a detrimental effect on it, as compared to the control group. Thus, the presence of the lower concentrations of this compound in the embryonic culture medium had favourable effects on the development of embryos.

What is the central question of this study? Animal infarct studies indicate a delayed window of cardiac protection after remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC); however, the presence and duration of this delayed effect have not been examined in human microvasculature in vivo. What is the main finding and its importance? Cutaneous vasodilatation induced by local heating or ACh was increased significantly 24 and 48h after a single bout of RIPC, respectively. Neither response persisted beyond ∼48h. Sodium nitroprusside-induced cutaneous vasodilatation was not altered. These findings reveal a delayed increase in microvascular endothelial function after a single bout of RIPC.

Remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) induces protective effects from ischaemia-reperfusion injury. learn more In the myocardium and conduit vasculature, a single bout of RIPC confers delayed protection that begins 24h afterwards and lasts for 2-3days. However, the extent and the time line in which a single bout of RIPC affects the human microvasnse that peaked ∼48 h post-RIPC.

What is the central question of this study? Is blood flow regulation to hypoxia different between the internal carotid arteries (ICAs) and vertebral arteries (VAs), and what is the measurement error in unilateral extracranial artery assessments compared to bilateral? What is the main finding and its importance? ICA and VA blood flow regulation to hypoxia is comparable when factoring for vessel type and vessel side. Compared to bilateral assessment, vessels assessed unilaterally had individual measurement errors of up to 37%. Assessing the vessel with the larger resting blood flow, not the left or right vessel, reduces unilateral measurement error.

Whether blood flow regulation to hypoxia is similar between left and right internal carotid arteries (ICAs) and vertebral arteries (VAs) is unclear. Extracranial blood flow is regularly calculated by doubling a unilateral assessment; however, lateral artery differences may lead to measurement error. This study aimed to determine extracranial blood flow regulatio not the left or right vessel, reduces unilateral measurement error.

Breast cancer treatments bring adverse consequences that interfere with everyday functioning. Importantly, some of these treatments are associated with cognitive and language changes. Tamoxifen is a selective estrogen receptor modulator and is a common endocrine therapy treatment for breast cancer. The current review examines the specific domains of cognitionand language affected by the use of tamoxifen in women with breast cancer.

We conducted a systematic search that examined cognitive and/or language functions in chemotherapy-naïve women with breast cancer taking tamoxifen. PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL Complete, PsycINFO, Scopus, EMBASE, and the Grey Literature Report (greylit.org) were searched. Covidence Systematic Review software (covidence.org) was used to manage the screening process of study titles and abstracts as well as full texts. A total of 17 studies were included in the review.

A range of cognitive and language domains were reported. These were grouped into seven broad domains attention, memory, speed, executive functioning, verbal abilities, visual abilities, and language abilities. Results showed that there is compelling evidence that specific domains of memory and speed are negatively affected by the use of tamoxifen. In addition, there was a pattern of change in domains of executive functions and verbal abilities.

Tamoxifen affects specific cognitive and language domains. Language domains beyond semantics have not been studied and thus conclusions related to these domains, and language in general, could not be made. Studies exploring the effects of tamoxifen on the different domains of language are recommended.

However, there are many challenges associated with the mass spectrometric detection and identification of lipids because of the highly complex nature of plant lipids. Studies into lipid biosynthetic pathways, gene functions in lipid metabolism, lipid changes during plant growth and development, and the holistic examination of the role of plant lipids in environmental stress responses are often hindered. Here, we leveraged a robust pipeline that we previously established to extract and analyze lipid profiles of different tissues and developmental stages from the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. We analyzed seven tissues at several different developmental stages and identified more than 200 lipids from each tissue analyzed. The data were used to create a web-accessible in silico lipid map that has been integrated into an electronic Fluorescent Pictograph (eFP) browser. This in silico library of Arabidopsis lipids allows the visualization and exploration of the distribution and changes of lipid levels across selected developmental stages. Furthermore, it provides information on the characteristic fragments of lipids and adducts observed in the mass spectrometer and their retention times, which can be used for lipid identification. The Arabidopsis tissue lipid map can be accessed at http//bar.utoronto.ca/efp_arabidopsis_lipid/cgi-bin/efpWeb.cgi.In the operating conditions of the 21st century it is impossible to be competent alone' (O'Hara & Leicester, 2019, p. 16). Competence in leading and managing, as in any professional practice, is best understood as the ability to work with others to meet important challenges in complex human systems (Rychen & Salganik, 2003). Systems thinkers such as Oshry (1999, 2007, 2018, 2019, 2020) recognise that competence is a function of systems and culture; that is, of relationships. This insight acknowledges the importance of being able to work effectively in group settings but goes further in recognising that our lives are always lived in complex patterns of relationships with others (O'Hara & Leicester, 2019).
