3%). The presence of denture stomatitis was significantly higher in the maxilla relative to the mandible (p = 0.0029), in subjects cleaning their dentures less than twice a day (p < 0.001), in subjects regularly using CHX-containing products (p = 0.036) and in subjects with a plaque index > 40% (p < 0.001).
Root cap-retained overdentures with precision attachments are a viable treatment option in partially dentate subjects, even over long-term periods. However, high complication rates should be expected.
Establishing good oral hygiene is a decisive factor in preventing complications in RODs. Furthermore, CHX-containing products may not be recommended for routine domestic use.

To investigate the associations between dental conditions, sliver diamine fluoride (SDF) application, parental satisfaction, and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of preschool children.
In a clinical trial conducted in Hong Kong, preschool children who had carious lesions into dentine were randomly assigned to receive an application of SDF solution or placebo on their caries lesions 10 weeks before they received restorations. Additionally, a random sample of caries-free children was also recruited. Parents of the study children rated their satisfaction with their child's teeth using a 5-point scale (5 = very satisfied, 1 = very dissatisfied) 10 weeks after SDF or placebo application. Cytidine Besides, the Chinese version of the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (C-ECOHIS) was used to assess the children's OHRQoL.
There were 127, 133, and 154 children in the SDF, placebo, and caries-free groups, respectively. The parents whose child had 4 or more decayed teeth reported lower satisfaction scores (mean = 2.0 ± 0.7) with their child's dental health status compared with those of parents whose child had fewer (mean = 2.6 ± 0.9) or no (mean = 3.7 ± 0.7) decayed teeth (p < 0.001). These parents also reported higher C-ECOHIS scores. However, there was no significant difference in parental satisfaction and children's OHRQoL between the SDF and placebo groups (p > 0.05).
In this study population, parental satisfaction and children's OHRQoL were associated with children's dental caries status but not with SDF application.
This study provides valuable information about the factors, including SDF application, that can influence parental satisfaction and OHRQoL of preschool children.

The presence of true desmoplastic reaction facilitates the diagnosis of invasion. However, desmoplasia-like changes can be observed in benign gallbladder conditions, and recognition of desmoplasia may be challenging based on morphology. In this study, we tested the expression pattern of microfibril-associated protein 5 (MFAP5), a promising immunohistochemical marker for desmoplasia, in benign gallbladders with desmoplasia-like reaction and gallbladders with invasive adenocarcinoma. We also evaluated the diagnostic utility of MFAP5 in challenging cases with an interobserver agreement study. The results showed that all benign cases retained intact/positive MFAP5 staining pattern in periglandular connective tissue, whereas 79.3% (23 out of 29) of cases of adenocarcinomas demonstrated diffuse and complete loss of MFAP5 staining in the tumor stroma. Interobserver agreement was improved by 2.66 times when images of MFAP5 immunohistochemistry were provided. In conclusion, MFAP5 expression is downregulated in the desmoplastic stroma of gallbladder adenocarcinoma and may provide a useful diagnostic marker in difficult cases.Rice blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is a highly damaging disease. Introducing genes, which confer a broad spectrum resistance to the disease, such as Pib, makes an important contribution to protecting rice production. However, little is known regarding the mechanistic basis of the products of such genes. In this study, transcriptome of the cultivar Lijiangxintuanheigu (LTH) and its monogenic IRBLb-B which harbors Pib treated with M. oryzae were compared. Among the many genes responding transcriptionally to infection were some encoding products involved in the metabolism of ROS (reactive oxygen species), in jasmonate (JA) metabolism, and WRKY transcription factors, receptor kinases, and resistance response signal modulation. The down-regulation of genes encoding peroxiredoxin and glutathione S transferases implied that the redox homeostasis is essential for the expression of Pib-mediated resistance. The up-regulation of seven disease resistance-related genes, including three encoding a NBS-LRR protein, indicated that disease resistance-related genes are likely tend to support the expression of Pib resistance. These data revealed that potential candidate genes and transcriptional reprogramming were involved in Pib-mediated resistance mechanisms. The biomanufacturing industry has now the opportunity to upgrade its production processes to be in harmony with the latest industrial revolution. Technology creates capabilities that enable smart manufacturing while still complying with unfolding regulations. However, many biomanufacturing companies, especially in the biopharma sector, still have a long way to go to fully benefit from smart manufacturing as they first need to transition their current operations to an information-driven future. One of the most significant obstacles towards the implementation of smart biomanufacturing is the collection of large sets of relevant data. Therefore, in this work, we both summarize the advances that have been made to date with regards to the monitoring and control of bioprocesses, and highlight some of the key technologies that have the potential to contribute to gathering big data. Empowering the current biomanufacturing industry to transition to Industry 4.0 operations allows for improved productivity through information-driven automation, not only by developing infrastructure, but also by introducing more advanced monitoring and control strategies.Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) shows rapid spread around the world. Its classic presentation is a respiratory illness. However, cutaneous manifestations have rarely been described as the first clinical manifestation in patients with this infection. The aim of this article is to describe cutaneous manifestations in patients with COVID-19 through three case reports.Postmortem detection of pathogens in infectious deaths is quite important for diagnosing the cause of death and public health. However, it is difficult to detect possible bacterial pathogens in forensic practice using conventional methods like bacterial culture, especially in cases with putrefaction and antibiotic treatment. We report a fatal case caused by necrotizing fasciitis due to bacterial infection. An 8-year-old girl was found dead during sleep 4 days after a minor trauma to her left knee. The gross autopsy suggested that bacterial soft tissue infection might be the cause of death, and the microscopic examination confirmed the diagnosis. The slight putrefaction found at gross autopsy might interfere through postmortem bacterial translocation and reproduction with bacterial culture. High-throughput 16S rDNA sequencing was employed to identify possible pathogens. Bacterial DNA sequencing results suggested Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus, typical pathogens of necrotizing fasciitis in the tissue. 16S rDNA sequencing might thus be a useful tool for accurate detection of pathogens in forensic practice.Latinx immigrants and men, in particular, living in the US are disproportionally impacted by HIV. Despite these concerns, there is limited research on the development, implementation, and evaluation of community-based HIV education and HIV testing interventions. The current study describes such efforts within a historic Mexican immigrant enclave in Chicago. A mixed-methods case study was used to describe intervention development, as well as preliminary evaluation data. Community intervention components were refined through early focus groups, asset mapping, community networking and consultation with cultural advisors. We exceeded our activity goals. We were successful in reaching a segment of the population that is often overlooked and remains unaware of HIV and its risks. Incorporating social network approaches could facilitate reaching at-risk community groups. Demonstration projects require more time and resources (fiscal and technical) to develop, refine, evaluate and sustain community-level intervention components.Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is the most common cause of neurological disability in infancy. Superimposed inflammation may further worsen neurological outcomes. Reliable biomarkers which are both sensitive to hypoxic-ischemia and inflammation are critically needed. We tested plasma osteopontin (OPN) and glial fibrillary astrocytic protein (GFAP) within the reported therapeutic window (90 min after hypoxic-ischemic (HI) injury) in neonatal rats with different HI severity and inflammation. Two different HI severity groups (mild-HI with 75 min hypoxia and severe-HI with 150 min hypoxia) were established. Inflammation-sensitized HI brain injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) further increased apoptotic neurons and infarct volumes. In HI alone groups, OPN was significantly decreased (p less then 0.001) but GFAP was slightly increased (p less then 0.05) at 90 min after HI either in mild-HI or severe-HI compared with naïve group. In LPS-sensitized HI groups, both OPN and GFAP were significantly increased either in LPS-mild-HI or LPS-severe-HI groups compared with the naïve group (all p less then 0.05). Induced inflammation by LPS exaggerated neonatal HI brain injury. The plasma OPN and GFAP levels may be useful to differentiate HI alone groups from inflammation-sensitized HI groups or naïve group. We study resident-invader dynamics in fluctuating environments when the invader and the resident have close but distinct strategies. First we focus on a class of continuous-time models of unstructured populations of multi-dimensional strategies, which incorporates environmental feedback and environmental stochasticity. Then we generalize our results to a class of structured population models. We classify the generic population dynamical outcomes of an invasion event when the resident population in a given environment is non-growing on the long-run and stochastically persistent. Our approach is based on the series expansion of a model with respect to the small strategy difference, and on the analysis of a stochastic fast-slow system induced by time-scale separation. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that the total size of the resident and invader population varies stochastically and dramatically in time, while the relative size of the invader population changes slowly and asymptotically in time. Thereby the classification is based on the asymptotic behavior of the relative population size, and which is shown to be fully determined by invasion criteria (i.
