To evaluate the effects of increased endogenous Antisecretory Factor (AF) synthesis using specially processed cereals (SPC) in a sample of patients with defined unilateral Meniere's disease (MD), compared to the results of a treatment protocol of intravenous glycerol and dexamethasone.

Twenty-six patients with unilateral MD were divided in 2 groups and treated with SPC and with intravenous glycerol and dexamethasone for 24months. Audio-vestibular evaluation was performed before (T0) and every six months. The number of vertigo spells were evaluated before and after therapy and the Efficacy Index (EI) was calculated. Questionnaires for hearing loss, tinnitus and quality of life were administered.

EI decreased in the SPC group after 18 (T18) (p=.0017) and 24 (T24) months of therapy (p=.0111). There was a significant reduction for tinnitus score in the SPC group at T24 (p=.0131). No significant differences were found between the two groups at T0 (p=.4723), while a significant difference was found at T24 (p=.0027). Quality of life showed a significant improvement in daily activities in the SPC group (p=.0033) compared to the infusion therapy group. No statistically significant changes in PTA thresholds were found in both groups between T0 and T24.

The preliminary results of our study show a significant reduction of vertigo spells and a positive effect on tinnitus severity and on quality of life in patients with unilateral MD treated with SPC and when compared to patients treated with intravenous glycerol and dexamethasone. Individuals routinely perform cognitive tasks concurrent to balance functions. The attention is one of the most important cognitive functions and it has effects on vestibular system. This study aims to investigate the connection between balance and cognitive tasks under different conditions.

Visual attention tasks (VAT) and auditory attention tasks (AAT) were given to 30 healthy adults (40.42 ± 11.22 years) during functional balance tasks. Sensory Organization Test (SOT) and Adaptation Test (ADT) were used for the evaluation of postural stability and adaptation. The sounds were presented from the computer speakers in AATs, and VATs were presented in the virtual reality (VR) environment.

The first SOT condition had a statistically significant difference between all dual VAT (DT-VAT) and single task (ST) (p < 0.001), but there was no statistically significant difference between ST and DT-AAT (p = 1.00). In the fourth SOT condition, there was a statistically significant difference between all DT-VATs versus ST and DT-VA (p < 0.001); there was no statistically significant difference between ST and DT-AA scores (p = 0.80). While there was a significant difference between DT-VA and ST and DT-AA (p < 0.001), no statistically significant difference was observed between ST and DT-AA in the ADT (p = 0.321).

Tonsillotomy with radiofrequency (RF) is one of the newest treatments for chronic tonsillitis, but the mechanism of RF effects and complications are still pending. AICAR mouse The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of RF on the histological and bacteriological characteristics of the tonsils (Case-control study).

In fifty-two patients with chronic tonsillitis in 2017-2018, immediately after tonsillectomy, the tonsils were divided into 2sections; one sample treated with RF, and the other one considered as control, without intervention. All tonsil samples sent for histological and bacteriological study morphometric assays made by Digitizer software, and type of bacterial colonies identified by microbiological and biochemical tests. Willcoxon and McNemar tests were used for statistical analysis and level of significance was p≤.05.

) were significantly lower in the RF+ group than other group (p=.001 and p=.01, respectively). There was no significant differences in thickness of the tonsil epithelium (p=.075), number of lymphoid nodules (p=.860), and the number of reticular tonsil epithelium (p=.813) between the two groups. Bacterial growth in RF- and RF+ groups had no statistically significant difference (p=.06), however, the average colony count of S. aureus in RF+ tonsils were significantly lower, and total number of bacterial colonies were significantly lower in RF+ group(1405±156 vs. 2471±156), (p=.001).

Extracts of several Asteraceae species in Brazil are popularly used as anti-inflammatory. Some of these species are popularly recognizes as "arnica" because of the morphological and sensorial analogy with the traditional European Arnica montana. These used species in Brazil were identified as Calea uniflora Less, Chaptalia nutans (L.) Polák, Lychnophora ericoides Mart. Lychnophora pinaster Mart. Lychnophora salicifolia Mart. Porophyllum ruderale (Jacq.) Cass, Pseudobrickellia brasiliensis (Spreng.) R. M. King & H. Rob. Sphagneticola trilobata (L.) Pruski and Solidago chilensis Meyen. However, the comparative chemical profile of these so-called "arnicas" has never been reported in the literature.
