45 kJ/mol. Therefore, HCO2 dehydrogenation is recognized as the rate-determining step. The proposed skeletal reaction scheme can be used to well understand the microcosmic reaction process of HCHO oxidation on Pt/TiO2 catalyst. Clam farming comprises an important part of China's economy. However, increasing pollution in the ocean caused by toxic metals has led to the bioaccumulation of toxic metals in marine animals, especially the bivalves such as clams, and the consequence of heavy metal-associated toxicity in these animals. Such toxicity can enhance the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) within the tissues of the animals. In aquatic species, oxidative stress mechanisms have been studied by measuring the antioxidant and oxidative damage index in the tissues. The objectives of this study were to investigate the levels of different toxic metals and the extent of oxidative stress responses in the clam Sinonovacula constricta at different growth periods (from May to October) in an aquaculture farm in Wengyang, an important economic shellfish culture zone in Zhejiang Province, China. Water and sediment samples taken from the farm were subjected to Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr assays. Overall, the levels of these metals in the water and sedil pollution should be taken into account when selecting the site to be used as an aquaculture farm. In addition, the visceral mass should be considered to be a good tissue for measuring the level of metal pollutants. A computer casing plastic waste containing brominated flame retardants (BFRs) was pyrolyzed in a two-stage vertical quartz tube reactor using iron and nickel metals modified MCM-41 catalysts. Various catalysts with different ratios of Fe and Ni were prepared and utilized to study their catalytic performance. At the presence of 20%Ni/MCM-41 catalyst, the pyrolytic yield of oil and gas reached maximum values of 49.9 wt% and 13.8 wt% respectively. The co-existence of Fe and Ni showed synergistic effect on oil composition by promoting the formation of valuable single ring hydrocarbons. With regard to the 15%Fe-5%Ni/MCM-41, 10%Fe-10%Ni/MCM-41 and 5%Fe-15%Ni/MCM-41 catalysts, the production of single ring hydrocarbons were 64.58%, 65.93% and 64.74% respectively. The bimetallic catalysts also exhibited remarkable effect on eliminating bromine from pyrolytic oil. At the presence of Fe-Ni/MCM-41, the bromine in pyrolytic oil was reduced to below 4 wt% compared with 10 wt% without catalyst. Higher amounts of Fe in the catalyst is beneficial for the debromination efficiency. The debromination process by the Fe-Ni/MCM-41 may be realized by these different mechanisms catalytic cracking of organobromines, reaction of loaded metal oxides with HBr/SbBr3, and deposition of organobromines on the surface of catalyst. Thiophanate-methyl (TM) is widely used all over the world and is a typical example of pesticide residues, which can be detected in the soil, and even in vegetables and fruits. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the hepatotoxicity of TM are not well understood. In this study, we utilized zebrafish to comprehensively evaluate the hepatotoxicity of TM and explore how the molecular mechanisms of hepatotoxicity are induced. The zebrafish larvae were exposed in 6.25, 12.5 and 25 mg/L TM from 72 to 144 hpf, while the adults were exposed in 2, 4 and 6 mg/L TM for 28 days. Here, we found that 12.5 and 25 mg/L TM induces specifically serious hepatotoxicity but not the toxicity of other organs in zebrafish larvae and adults. Moreover, it might triggered hepatotoxicity by activating the caspase-3 through apoptotic pathways and oxidative stress in zebrafish. Subsequently, this resulted in a metabolic imbalance in the zebrafish's liver. In conclusion, our results disclosed the fact that TM may induce severe hepatotoxicity by mediating activation of caspase-3 and oxidative stress in zebrafish. selleck products Degradation of phenols with different substituent groups (including -OCH3, -CHO, -NHCOCH3, -NO2, and -Cl) at boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes has been studied previously based on the removal efficiency and •OH detection. Innovatively, formations of CO2 gas and various inorganic ions were examined to probe the mineralization process combined with quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) analysis. As results, all phenols were efficiently degraded within 8 h with high COD removal efficiency. Three primary intermediates (hydroquinone, 1,4-benzoquinone and catechol) were identified during electrochemical oxidation and degradation pathway was proposed. More importantly, CO2 transformation efficiency ranked as no N or Cl contained phenols (p-CHO, p-OCH3 and Ph) > N-contained phenols (p-NHCOCH3 and p-NO2) > Cl-contained phenols (p-Cl and o,p-Cl). Carbon mass balance study suggested formation of inorganic carbon (H2CO3, CO32- and HCO3-) and CO2 after organic carbon elimination. Inorganic nitrogen species (NH4+, NO3- and NO2-) and chlorine species (Cl-, ClO3- and ClO4-) were also formed after N- and Cl-contained phenols mineralization, while no volatile nitrogen species were detected. The phenols with electron-withdrawing substituents were easier to be oxidized than those with electron-donating substituents. QSAR analysis indicated that the reaction rate constant (k1) for phenols degradation was highly related to Hammett constant (∑σo,m,p) and energy gap (ELUMO - EHOMO) of the compound (R2 = 0.908), which were key parameters on evaluating the effect of structural moieties on electronic character and the chemical stability upon radical attack for a specific compound. This study presents clear evidence on mineralization mechanisms of phenols degradation at BDD anodes. The objective of the study was to determine the human serum elimination half-life of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) adjusted for ongoing exposure in subjects moving from a higher exposure region (North America) to a lower exposure region (Australia). The study population was comprised of exchange students and long-term visitors from North America moving to Brisbane, Australia (N = 27) and local residents (N = 23) who were followed by repeated serum sampling every other month. The local residents were sampled to adjust for ongoing exposure in Australia. Only one visitor remained in Australia for a period of time similar to the elimination half-life and had a sufficiently high initial concentration of PBDEs to derive a half-life. This visitor arrived in Australia in March of 2011 and remained in the country for 1.5 years. Since the magnitude of PBDE exposure is lower in Australia than in North America we observed an apparent 1st order elimination curve over time from which we have estimated the serum elimination half-lives for BDE28, BDE47, BDE99, BDE100, and BDE153 to be 0.942, 1.19, 1.03, 2.16, and 4.12 years, respectively. Uncertainty in the estimates were estimated using a Monte Carlo simulation. The human serum elimination half-life adjusted for ongoing exposure can allow us to assess the effectiveness and reduction in exposure in the general population following phase out of commercial penta- and octaBDE in 2004 in the United States. Endometriosis and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) are common conditions among young women of reproductive age. The etiologies to the diseases are uncertain, but multifactorial pathophysiology has been proposed for each of them. Many studies have examined the two conditions separately, but the literature on the associations between endometriosis and IBS is sparse. However, there is an increasing amount of research on how endometriosis patients are likely to also have a diagnosis of IBS. Furthermore, endometriosis shares several features with IBS, such as low-grade inflammation and visceral hypersensitivity. This systematic review summarized published original articles in English that have compared associations between endometriosis and IBS. The inclusion criteria for articles in the review were i) endometriosis was diagnosed by surgical methods, ii) gastrointestinal symptoms were examined in a structured manner and iii) IBS was diagnosed by Rome criteria. From the initial 254 publications identified on PubMed, morbidity between endometriosis and IBS, or whether the gastrointestinal symptomatology in endometriosis depends on medication. Additionally, the adequacy of the Rome criteria to differentiate IBS from the shared symptomatology of other diseases with visceral hypersensitivity must be further evaluated. OBJECTIVE Peritoneal adhesions may develop after every abdominopelvic surgery. Many agents and technical modifications have been investigated to minimize adhesions. Punica granatum (pomegranate) flower has some anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects that would reduce the formation of peritoneal adhesions. In the present study, the effects of different doses of oral Punica granatum flower extract on postoperative peritoneal adhesions were evaluated in a rat model. STUDY DESIGN Thirty-two female Wistar rats were divided into four groups one control group (CG) and three experimental groups, treated with 100 (EG100), 200 (EG200), and 400 (EG400) mg/kg/day Punica granatum extract orally for eight days. Induction of peritoneal adhesions was done in all groups using the same method. Two weeks after the first surgery, all rats re-operated and adhesions were evaluated via both macroscopic and microscopic changes. RESULTS We observed that rats in the control group had statistically higher adhesion area and more severe adhesions when compared to all experimental groups. Besides, those in the EG-400 group had a significantly lower rate of foreign body reaction in serosal layer when compared to the other three study groups. Other microscopic findings were comparable between the four groups. CONCLUSION Administration of the oral Punica granatum flower extract was associated with a decreased quantity and quality of the adhesions in the animal model of rat in this study. This therapy might be an effective and safe strategy to reduce intraperitoneal adhesion after abdominal surgeries in animal models. V.PURPOSE Differentiating between epileptic seizures, convulsive syncope or non-epileptic seizures is a common diagnostic challenge in the acute setting. Plasma-lactate levels have previously been proposed as a tool to aid in differentiating between epileptic and non-epileptic seizures, with lower levels of lactate suggesting a non-epileptic origin. The aim of this study was to investigate levels of lactate in non-epileptic seizures. METHODS Healthy subjects were asked to perform a simulated seizure lasting no more than 5 min. Venous blood samples were taken before and immediately after the simulated seizure and analyzed using an ABL90 FLEX yielding information about lactate, pH, pO2,pCO2, electrolytes and plasma glucose. RESULTS 8 people participated in the study 6 men and 2 women aged 27-45. The average pre-simulation lactate was 1.1 mmol/L while the average pH was 7.39. The average post-simulation lactate was 10.2 mmol/L while the average pH was 7.25. This means an average increase in plasma-lactate of 9.1 mmol/L and an average drop of 0.15 in pH. CONCLUSION Our data indicate that high rises in lactate levels are not specific for an epileptic origin. Further study of lactate as a marker for epileptic seizures is warrented.
