7 points (95%CI=11.6, 13.8). Participants who had recurrences of activity-limiting LBP, but who did not seek care, had an overall impact of 15.5 points (95% CI=13.5, 17.6), and those who had recurrences of LBP for which healthcare was sought had an overall impact of 16.9 points (95% CI=15.3, 18.4). CONCLUSION The average impact due to recurrence of LBP was low and dependent on the definition of recurrence. The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in the territory of Hong Kong was announced on January 23, 2020. Since then, oculoplastic surgeons in Hong Kong have been taking every measure to protect all healthcare workers and patients from contracting the disease. This paper aims to share the experiences of and measures taken by local oculoplastic surgeons in combating COVID-19. Three main aspects are discussed, namely clinical, administrative, and training and educational. We hope our experiences would provide reference to fellow oculoplastic colleagues in other parts of the world in fighting this COVID-19 pandemic.OBJECTIVE To compare opioid prescribing behavior of emergency medicine providers following the enactment of Connecticut Public Act (PA) 15-198 at a large academic tertiary medical center. METHODS This study is a single-center pre and postlaw retrospective cohort of ED patients discharged with opioid prescriptions. Patients discharged from January 1, 2015, to June 30, 2015, were analyzed as the prelaw cohort, and patients discharged from January 1, 2016, to June 30, 2016, were analyzed as the postlaw cohort. The primary outcome was the cumulative dose of solid dosage forms of opioids per prescription, calculated in morphine milligram equivalents (MME). RESULTS A total of 10,307 prescriptions included in the final analysis. A statistically significant decrease in the primary outcome was seen in the postlaw cohort compared with the prelaw cohort, respectively (75 MME [interquartile range, IQR 60-100) vs 80 MME [IQR 75-150]; P less then .001). The postlaw cohort also saw 1289 (22.2%) fewer opioid prescriptions, primarily driven by a reduction in the number of schedule II opioids prescribed. In a posthoc analysis, the primary outcome remained statistically significant even when opioid prescriptions were only included if their prebuilt settings were unchanged between pre and postlaw cohorts, respectively (85.1%; 95.6 MME (±56.0); n = 5041 vs 86.7 MME (±39.6); n = 3713; P less then .001). CONCLUSIONS The passage of PA 15-198 was associated with a decrease in the cumulative dose of opioids per prescription of solid dosage form products. This drop was precipitated by a transition from using opioids in schedule II to opioids in schedule IV and a modest decrease in prescribed opioid quantity.Internal circadian clocks organize animal behavior and physiology and are entrained by ecologically relevant external time-givers such as light and temperature cycles. In the highly social honey bee, social time-givers are potent and can override photic entrainment, but the cues mediating social entrainment are unknown. Here, we tested whether substrate-borne vibrations and hive volatiles can mediate social synchronization in honey bees. We first placed newly emerged worker bees on the same or on a different substrate on which we placed cages with foragers entrained to ambient day-night cycles, while minimizing the spread of volatiles between cages. In the second experiment, we exposed young bees to constant airflow drawn from either a free-foraging colony or a similar-size control hive containing only heated empty honeycombs, while minimizing transfer of substrate-borne vibrations between cages. After 6 days, we isolated each focal bee in an individual cage in an environmental chamber and monitored her locomotor activity. We repeated each experiment 5 times, each trial with bees from a different source colony, monitoring a total of more than 1000 bees representing diverse genotypes. We found that bees placed on the same substrate as foragers showed a stronger phase coherence and a phase more similar to that of foragers compared with bees placed on a different substrate. In the second experiment, bees exposed to air drawn from a colony showed a stronger phase coherence and a phase more similar to that of foragers compared with bees exposed to air from an empty hive. These findings lend credence to the hypothesis that surrogates of activity entrain circadian rhythms and suggest that multiple social cues can act in concert to entrain social insect colonies to a common phase. Background Human relaxin-2 is a peptide hormone capable of pleiotropic effects in several organ systems. Its recombinant formulation (serelaxin) has been demonstrated to reduce infarct size and prevent excessive scar formation in animal models of cardiac ischemia-reperfusion injury. B7-33, a synthetically designed peptide analogous to B-chain of relaxin-2, invokes signaling at relaxin family peptide receptor 1 (cognate receptor for relaxin-2) by preferentially phosphorylating the mitogen-activated protein kinase extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2. We sought to investigate the effects of B7-33 treatment post ischemia-reperfusion injury in mice. Methods and Results Adult male CD1 mice were subjected to ischemia-reperfusion via ligation of left anterior descending artery for 30 minutes, followed by 24 hours or 7 days of reperfusion. Echocardiography was performed to assess cardiac function, and cardiac tissue was stained to determine infarct size at 24 hours. B7-33 significantly reduced infarct size (21.99% versus 45.32%; P=0.02) and preserved fractional shortening (29% versus 23%; P=0.02) compared with vehicle. The difference in fractional shortening further increased at 7 days post myocardial infarction (29% versus 20% for B7-33 and vehicle groups, respectively). In vitro, primary cardiomyocytes were isolated from adult hearts and subjected to simulated ischemia-reperfusion injury (simulated ischemia reoxygenation). B7-33 (50 and 100 nmol/L) improved cell survival and reduced the expression of GRP78 (glucose regulated protein), an endoplasmic reticulum stress marker. Subsequently, B7-33 (100 nmol/L) reduced tunicamycin (2.5 μg/mL) induced upregulation of GRP78 in an extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2-dependent manner. Conclusions B7-33 confers acute cardioprotection and limits myocardial infarction-related adverse remodeling in mice by attenuating cardiomyocyte death and endoplasmic reticulum stress as well as preserving cardiac function. Objective Management of brainstem metastatic tumor is challenging. This study aimed to evaluate overall survival and quality-of-life in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) brainstem metastases who were treated with the Cyberknife stereotactic radiosurgery. Methods From August 2007 through August 2016, a total of 32 patients with 34 brainstem metastases of NSCLC were consecutively enrolled and treated with the Cyberknife radiosurgery (CKRS) at The Huashan Hospital. Infigratinib research buy The study was limited to patients with NSCLC, which was confirmed by postoperative pathological examination. Patients were treated by CKRS as an initial treatment or a second treatment after whole-brain radiation therapy (WBRT). Quality of life was assessed by the SF-12 score and neurological examination. Results Four out of the 32 (12.5%) patients received WBRT before or concurrent with CKRS treatment. The mean survival time after CKRS was 10.0 (95%CI 6.0-14.0) months. Karnofsky performance score was not the independent predictor of survival after radiosurgery as analyzed by log-rank test (p = 0.392). Age, however, was a significant predictor of improved survival as analyzed by multivariate analysis (p = 0.024). SF-12 physical component scores demonstrated no significant change after treatment. Conclusions The CKSR is a non-invasive, safe, and effective modality in the treatment of patients with brainstem metastases of NSCLC. Better therapeutic outcomes of CKSR for brainstem metastasis might be achieved in the patients older than 65 years old.Purpose To investigate the physiological uptake of hybrid fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) before and after an uncomplicated endovascular aneurysm sealing (EVAS) procedure as a possible tool to diagnose EVAS graft infection and differentiate from postimplantation syndrome. Materials and Methods Eight consecutive male patients (median age 78 years) scheduled for elective EVAS were included in the prospective study (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier NCT02349100). FDG-PET/CT scans were performed in all patients before the procedure and 6 weeks after EVAS. The abdominal aorta was analyzed in 4 regions suprarenal, infrarenal neck, aneurysm sac, and iliac. The following parameters were obtained for each region standard uptake value (SUV), tissue to background ratio (TBR), and visual examination of FDG uptake to ascertain its distribution. Demographic data were obtained from medical files and scored based on reporting standards. Results Visual examination showed no difference between pre- and postprocedure FDG uptake, which was homogenous. In the suprarenal region no significant pre- and postprocedure differences were observed for the SUV and TBR parameters. The infrarenal neck region showed a significant decrease in the SUV and no significant decrease in the TBR. The aneurysm sac and iliac regions both showed a significant decrease in SUV and TBR between the pre- and postprocedure scans. Conclusion Physiological FDG uptake after EVAS was stable or decreased with regard to the preprocedure measurements. Future research is needed to assess the applicability and cutoff values of FDG-PET/CT scanning to detect endograft infection after EVAS.Objectives Though the pathophysiology underlying schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BD) is not fully understood, immune function may be dysregulated, with microglia, the brain's resident immune cells, implicated in this process. Signaling between the neuronal chemokine fractalkine (CX3CL1) and its microglial receptor CX3CR1 facilitates neuron-microglia interactions, influencing microglial activation and synaptic function. As such, alterations in fractalkine signaling may contribute to immune and synaptic alterations observed in SCZ and BD.Methods Protein and mRNA expression of fractalkine, CX3CR1, and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10), a sheddase that cleaves fractalkine, were quantified in postmortem frontal cortex from individuals with SCZ (n = 35), BD (n = 34), and matched controls (n = 35) using immunoblotting and droplet digital PCR. In addition, the relationship between fractalkine pathway members and levels of the pre-synaptic protein SNAP-25 was examined. Results Fractalkine protein levels were significantly lower in SCZ relative to controls. Expression of members of the fractalkine signaling pathway was unchanged in BD. CX3CR1 protein levels were significantly correlated with SNAP-25 levels. Conclusions The observed deficit in fractalkine protein levels in SCZ is consistent with impaired neuron-microglia crosstalk in this disorder. Furthermore, our data is suggestive of an aberrant association between microglial function and synaptic density in SCZ.
