The bark of Amphipterygium adstringens Schiede ex Schltdl (Anacardiaceae), commonly known as 'cuachalalate' has been used in Mexican traditional medicine for the treatment of skin and oral lesions, gastric ulcers, and other conditions. The use as wound healing of the bark of this plant has been known since before the Spanish conquest of Mexico. Its uses are mentioned in the first writings of the Spanish in the 16th century. It is important to highlight that its use for wound healing treatment has no scientific previous reports.

The objectives of this study were to determine the wound healing effect of the hydroalcoholic extract of the stem bark of Amphipterygium adstringens and its main metabolites, using a model of excision in the back of Wistar rats. To evaluate its antimicrobial effect against common bacteria that living on the skin of wounds and to evaluate its effect on angiogenesis.

The hydroalcoholic extract of cuachalalate (HAE, 10 mg/wound/day), the 3α-hydroxymasticadienoic acid (3MA, 300 μg/wodroxymasticadienoic acid and anacardic acids showed a better tissue structure and reduced the time closure of the wound. In addition, the anacardic acids showed antimicrobial effects and both metabolites promote angiogenesis, suggesting that these effects may be related to their action mechanism. These metabolites of cuachalalate could be a good alternative for wound healing treatment.The response of the human body to multiple spaceflight stressors is complex, but mounting evidence implicate risks to CNS functionality as significant, able to threaten metrics of mission success and longer-term behavioral and neurocognitive health. Prolonged exposure to microgravity, sleep disruption, social isolation, fluid shifts, and ionizing radiation have been shown to disrupt mechanisms of homeostasis and neurobiological well-being. The overarching goal of this review is to document the existing evidence of how the major spaceflight stressors, including radiation, microgravity, isolation/confinement, and sleep deprivation, alone or in combination alter molecular, neurochemical, neurobiological, and plasma metabolite/lipid signatures that may be linked to operationally-relevant behavioral and cognitive performance. We suggest a dimensional approach, according to which these partially opposing disorders fall onto a continuum that reflects variability regarding alterations of cortico-striato-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuits and of the processing of neural noise during cognition. By using theoretical accounts of human cognitive metacontrol, we develop a framework according to which OCD can be characterized by a chronic bias towards exaggerated cognitive persistence, equivalent to a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)-which facilitates perseverative behaviour but impairs mental flexibility. In contrast, ADHD is characterized by a chronic bias towards inflated cognitive flexibility, equivalent to a low SNR-which increases behavioural variability but impairs the focusing on one goal and on relevant information. To test the relationship between effective accommodation and mental health on its continuum, we studied the relative association of magnitude of capability with symptoms of anxiety or depression compared with quantifications of rotator cuff pathology such as defect size, degree of retraction, and muscle atrophy among patients presenting for specialty care.

Fragility fractures are a significant source of morbidity and have high associated mortality. Identifying risk factors for poor outcomes is essential for guiding treatment and for setting expectations for patients and their families. Although fragility hip fractures have been abundantly explored, there is a paucity of information regarding proximal humerus fractures (PHFs).

We retrospectively review the electronic medical records of 379 patients who presented to a level 1 trauma center with a PHF secondary to a fall. Patient demographics, handedness, comorbidities, treatment, imaging data, follow-up data, and death date (if applicable) were recorded.

Our cohort consisted of 279 females and 100 males with an average age of 71.4 years. Distribution of injuries was 178 left, 141 right, and 7 bilateral. Compared with handedness, 179 were ipsilateral, 141 were contralateral, and 59 were unknown. A total of 81.3% of injuries were treated nonoperatively, whereas 18.7% were managed surgically. The purpose of this study was to systematically review the literature to ascertain the clinical outcomes of the open Latarjet (OL) procedure using either a subscapularis-split (SS) or subscapularis tenotomy (ST) via a deltopectoral (DP) approach.

Two independent reviewers performed a literature search using the PubMed, Embase, and Scopus databases according to PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses) guidelines. Only studies reporting on outcomes of the OL procedure via a DP approach comparing both SS and ST were considered for inclusion. Meta-analysis to compare clinical outcomes was performed using RevMan software.

Our search found 5 studies that met our inclusion criteria, including 615 shoulders (80.8% male patients), with an average age of 27.8±12.6 years (range, 15-79 years) and mean follow-up period of 50.1±29.4 months (range, 12-180 months). A total of 410 shoulders and 205 shoulders underwent the OL procedure via a DP approach using the ST technique and the SSn cases of OL procedures being carried out via a DP approach, the SS technique results in significantly better functional outcome measures and significantly lower rates of subscapularis insufficiency when compared with an L-shaped ST technique at medium-term follow-up. Furthermore, there were lower rates of recurrent instability that were trending toward significance in favor of the SS technique.

Animal models expressing mutant genes associated to CMI represent either rare mutations or those contributing only minimally to genetic risk. Non-genetic causes of CMI can be modeled by disturbing downstream signaling pathways, for example by inducing protein misassembly or aggregation. The Disrupted-in-Schizophrenia 1 (DISC1) gene was identified to be disrupted and thereby haploinsufficient in a large pedigree where it was associated with CMI. In a subset of CMI patients, the DISC1 protein misassembles to an insoluble protein. This has been modeled in a rat (tgDISC1 rat) where the full-length, non mutant human transgene was overexpressed and cognitive impairments were observed. Here, we investigated the scope of effects of DISC1 protein misassembly by investigating spatial memory, social behavior and stress resilience. In water maze tasks, the tgDISC1 rats showed intact spatial learning and memory, but were deficient in flexible adaptation to spatial reversal learning compared to littermate controls. They also displayed less social interaction. Additionally, there was a trend towards increased corticosterone levels after restraint stress in the tgDISC1 rats. Our findings suggest that DISC1 protein misassembly leads to disturbances of cognitive flexibility and social behaviors, and might also be involved in stress sensitization. Since the observed behavioral features resemble symptoms of CMI, the tgDISC1 rat may be a valuable model for the investigation of cognitive, social and - possibly - also stress-related symptoms of major mental illnesses.
