The wireless pH capsule is widely used to evaluate gastroesophageal reflux disease in patients. Common complications include premature capsule detachment, dysphagia, chest pain, and technical malfunctions. We present a 6-year-old boy who presented to our institution with a 2-day history of coffee-ground emesis. A pH capsule was found to be lodged in his distal esophagus 45 days after initial placement. We explore the possible reasons for capsule retention and briefly discuss the safety implications of this finding because we believe that this complication may be underreported.

An electronic medical record was used to retrospectively identify revision ACLR procedures performed by 2 surgeons between the years 2010 and 2016 in patients younger than 18 years at initial reconstruction. Descriptive information, intraoperative findings, surgical techniques, and rehabilitation data were recorded from initial and revision surgeries. Descriptive statistics were used.

A total of 32 patients (17 girls, 15 boys) met the inclusion criteria, with a mean age of 15.8 years at initial reconstruction. Hand and wrist injuries (HWIs) are common in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball players and can negatively affect performance. There is limited literature available on this topic.

To open a discussion on prevention strategies and encourage future research on HWIs in basketball athletes.

Descriptive epidemiology study.

HWIs sustained by male and female NCAA basketball players during the 2009-2010 through 2013-2014 academic years and reported to the NCAA Injury Surveillance Program (NCAA-ISP) database were utilized to characterize the epidemiology thereof. Rates and distributions of HWIs were identified within the context of mechanism of injury, injury recurrence, and time lost from sport.

Over the 5-year period, 81 HWIs in women and 171 HWIs in men were identified through the NCAA-ISP database. These were used to estimate 3515 HWIs nationally in women's basketball athletes and 7574 HWIs nationally in men's basketball athletes. The rate of HWIs in women was 4.20 per 10,000 athl more likely to be injured compared with women, and injuries were most common in the setting of competition for both sexes. The majority of injuries was considered minor and did not extensively limit participation; however, prevention and detection remain important for optimal performance.

At least 760,000 outpatient meniscectomies are performed in the United States each year, making this the most common musculoskeletal procedure. However, meniscal resection can alter the joint biomechanics and overload the articular cartilage, which may contribute to degenerative changes and the need for knee replacement. Avoiding or delaying knee replacement is particularly important in younger or more active patients. Synthetic meniscal implants have been developed in an attempt to restore the natural joint biomechanics, alleviate pain and disability, and potentially minimize degenerative changes in patients who require meniscectomy.
