Mesoplasma florum, a fast-growing near-minimal organism, is a compelling model to explore rational genome designs. Using sequence and structural homology, the set of metabolic functions its genome encodes was identified, allowing the reconstruction of a metabolic network representing ˜ 30% of its protein-coding genes. Growth medium simplification enabled substrate uptake and product secretion rate quantification which, along with experimental biomass composition, were integrated as species-specific constraints to produce the functional iJL208 genome-scale model (GEM) of metabolism. Genome-wide expression and essentiality datasets as well as growth data on various carbohydrates were used to validate and refine iJL208. Discrepancies between model predictions and observations were mechanistically explained using protein structures and network analysis. iJL208 was also used to propose an in silico reduced genome. Comparing this prediction to the minimal cell JCVI-syn3.0 and its parent JCVI-syn1.0 revealed key features of a minimal gene set. iJL208 is a stepping-stone toward model-driven whole-genome engineering.Coordination compounds including mainstream metal-organic frameworks and Prussian blue analogues receive extensive researches when they directly serve as electrocatalysts. Their reconstruction phenomena, that are closely associated with actual contributions and intrinsic catalytic mechanisms, are expected to be well summarized. Here, the recent advances in understanding reconstruction chemistry of coordination compounds are reviewed, including their main classifications and structural properties, reconstruction phenomena in electrocatalysis (e.g., oxygen/hydrogen evolution reaction, CO2 reduction), influence factors of reconstruction parameters (e.g., reconstruction rate and reconstruction degree), and reconstruction-performance correlation. It is outlined that the reconstruction processes are influenced by electronic structure of coordination compounds, pH and temperature of testing solution, and applied potentials. The characterization techniques reflecting the evolution information before and after catalysis are also introduced for reconstruction-related mechanistic study. Finally, some challenges and outlooks on reconstruction investigations of coordination compounds are proposed, and the necessity of studying and understanding of these themes under actual working conditions of devices is highlighted. The advances of surface-supported metal-organic framework (SURMOF) thin-film synthesis have provided a novel strategy for effectively integrating metal-organic framework (MOF) structures into electronic devices. The considerable potential of SURMOFs for electronics results from their low cost, high versatility, and good mechanical flexibility. Here, the first observation of room-temperature negative differential resistance (NDR) in SURMOF vertical heterojunctions is reported. By employing the rolled-up nanomembrane approach, highly porous sub-15 nm thick HKUST-1 films are integrated into a functional device. The NDR is tailored by precisely controlling the relative humidity (RH) around the device and the applied electric field. The peak-to-valley current ratio (PVCR) of about two is obtained for low voltages ( less then 2 V). A transition from a metastable state to a field emission-like tunneling is responsible for the NDR effect. The results are interpreted through band diagram analysis, density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations for quasisaturated water conditions. Furthermore, a low-voltage ternary inverter as a multivalued logic (MVL) application is demonstrated. These findings point out new advances in employing unprecedented physical effects in SURMOF heterojunctions, projecting these hybrid structures toward the future generation of scalable functional devices.

Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) and grip strength (GS) have been suggested to be related to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), but their association with type 2 diabetes (T2D) remains unclear. Therefore, we examined the combined association of ASM and GS with the prevalence of CVD in patients with T2D.

A total of 1230 patients with T2D were recruited and divided into four groups based on the sex-specific median values of ASM adjusted for body mass index (ASM/BMI; short SM) and GS high SM/high GS (HSM/HGS), high SM/low GS (HSM/LGS), low SM/high GS (LSM/HGS), and low SM/low GS (LSM/LGS).

The LSM/LGS group was older and had higher values of systolic blood pressure, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, waist circumference, and C-reactive protein but lower high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations than the HSM/HGS group. After adjusting for potential confounders, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% CIs for CVD, coronary heart disease (CHD), ischemic stroke, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) in the LSM/LGS group were 2.90 (1.89-4.47), 2.39 (1.46-3.92), 1.77 (0.84-3.71), and 5.83 (1.58-21.48), respectively. After adjusting for variable confounders among patients with higher glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) (≥7.1%), the ORs and 95% CIs for CVD and CHD in the LSM/LGS group were 7.27 (3.37-15.67) and 6.17 (2.65-14.37), respectively.

The combination of low SM and GS was strongly associated with CVD, CHD, and PAD in patients with T2D, especially in those with higher HbA1c levels.

The increasing numbers of older people (age 65+) make it important to understand how to attract nurses to work with this population.

A secondary analysis using qualitative descriptive methods was used to understand how student nurses' perceptions about older people may influence their desire to work with older people.

Student nurses perceive a generational divide between them and older people, regardless of practice settings. SodiumPyruvate They believe working with older people is heavy work, and not high acuity, and although good to learn skills as a student, not a population they want to work with until they are close to retirement themselves.

It is important to enhance nursing education so that students understand the older generation, how to communicate with them and the prevalence of older people in healthcare settings, so that they are more likely to choose to work with older people.

The study aimed to collect and compare practice characteristics for dental hygienists (DHs) in New Zealand (NZ) and Sweden.

Dental hygienists from NZ and Sweden were invited to participate in an anonymous online survey focusing on their working practices. An email, with a link to the online survey and a participant information sheet, was sent to DHs registered with their professional association in their respective country. Frequency analyses and cross-tabulations were conducted using Chi-square and Fisher's Exact tests to investigate possible statistical associations to allow for comparisons between the countries.

DH is a female-dominated workforce with equal distribution of gender in both countries. The majority of DHs in NZ worked in private practice while Swedish DHs mostly worked in the public sector. NZ participants were younger and with a more recent qualification than their Swedish counterparts. The highest degree of education was a PhD for DHs working in Sweden, compared with a Masters' Degree for NZ participants. The majority of participants from both countries treated patients 65 years of age or older, with the most common medical conditions being cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. The most common dental condition observed/treated was periodontal disease. Over 60% agreed to have an understanding of information technology (IT). The most used technical equipment was digital radiology, followed by other diagnostic tools.

Findings confirm previous international data on demographical uptake for the DH workforce in NZ and Sweden. A coherence was seen in patient characteristics, DHs attitudes towards information technology and use of technical equipment.

However, as the presentation of DS in neonates is less obvious, a phenotype-based presumptive diagnosis is more challenging. Recently, an artificial intelligence (AI) application, Face2Gene, was developed to help physicians recognize specific genetic syndromes by using two-dimensional facial photos. As of yet, there has not been any study comparing accuracy among physicians or applications. Our objective was to compare the facial recognition accuracy of DS in Thai neonates, using facial photographs, among physicians and the Face2Gene. Sixty-four Thai neonates at Thammasat University Hospital, with genetic testing and signed parental consent, were divided into a DS group (25) and non-DS group (39). Non-DS was further divided into unaffected (19) and those affected with other syndromes (20). Our results revealed physician accuracy (89%) was higher than the Face2Gene (81%); however, the application was higher in sensitivity (100%) than physicians (86%). While this application can serve as a helpful assistant in facilitating any genetic syndrome such as DS, to aid clinicians in recognizing DS facial features in neonates, it is not a replacement for well-trained doctors.Electronic devices with various functions bring great convenience and revolutionize the way we live. They are inevitable to degrade over time because of physical or chemical fatigue and damage during practical operation. To make these devices have the ability to autonomously heal from cracks and restore their mechanical and electrical properties, self-healing materials emerged as the time requires for constructing robust and self-healing electronic devices. Here the development of self-healing electronic devices with different functions, for example, energy harvesting, energy storage, sensing, and transmission, is reviewed. The new application scenarios and existing challenges are explored, and possible strategies and perspectives for future practical applications are discussed.Recovery from bone, osteochondral, and cartilage injuries/diseases has been burdensome owing to the damaged vasculature of large defects and/or avascular nature of cartilage leading to a lack of nutrients and supplying cells. However, traditional means of treatment such as microfractures and cell-based therapy only display limited efficacy due to the inability to ensure cell survival and potential aggravation of surrounding tissues. Exosomes have recently emerged as a powerful tool for this tissue repair with its complex content of transcription factors, proteins, and targeting ligands, as well as its unique ability to home in on target cells thanks to its phospholipidic nature. They are engineered to serve specialized applications including enhancing repair, anti-inflammation, regulating homeostasis, etc. via means of physical, chemical, and biological modulations in its deriving cell culture environments. This review focuses on the engineering means to functionalize exosomes for bone, osteochondral, and cartilage regeneration, with an emphasis on conditions such as osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and osteonecrosis.
