The evaluation of both methods showed that this ELISA kit could be considered as a faster and equally reliable alternative method to HPLC in routine analysis for the determination of AFM1 in milk. Many studies have highlighted the relationship between food and health status, with the aim of improving both disease prevention and life expectancy. Among the different food groups, fermented foods a have huge microbial biodiversity, making them an interesting source of metabolites that could exhibit health benefits. Our previous study highlighted the capacity of raw goat milk cheese, and some of the extracts recovered by the means of chemical fractionation, to increase the longevity of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. In this article, we pursued the investigation with a view toward understanding the biological mechanisms involved in this phenomenon. Using mutant nematode strains, we evaluated the implication of the insulin-like DAF-2/DAF-16 and the p38 MAPK pathways in the phenomenon of increased longevity and oxidative-stress resistance mechanisms. Our results demonstrated that freeze-dried raw goat milk cheese, and its extracts, induced the activation of the DAF-2/DAF-16 pathway, increasing longevity. Concerning oxidative-stress resistance, all the extracts increased the survival of the worms, but no evidence of the implication of both of the pathways was highlighted, except for the cheese-lipid extract that did seem to require both pathways to improve the survival rate. learn more Simultaneously, the cheese-lipid extract and the dried extract W70, obtained with water, were able to reduce the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in human leukocytes. This result is in good correlation with the results obtained with the nematode.Secondary organizing pneumonia refers to a disease process caused by pulmonary tissue injury. Various insults can cause secondary organizing pneumonia, including multiple types of infections and cancer. The mainstay of diagnosis is a combination of imaging and lung biopsy showing inflammatory changes, specifically plugs with granulated tissue and fibrosis. Clinical suspicion needs to be raised for secondary organizing pneumonia when a patient is requiring increasing amounts of oxygen in the presence of treatment for pneumonia or another underlying lung disease. Here, we present the case of a 65-year-old male who presented with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in the setting of previously having been tested positive for influenza B. Aggressive steroids with eventual tapering of his O2 requirements led to a successful outcome. While influenza has been reported as a cause of secondary organizing pneumonia after proceeding infection, these cases are usually represented by type A, rather than B.Cold, damp and mouldy housing arises from the degradation of the housing stock over time due to weathering and a lack of maintenance. Living in such houses is associated with many adverse impacts on human health, especially for those with existing health issues. This paper presents a systematic review, using the PRISMA protocol, consisting of an exploratory analysis of housing-related risk factors associated with respiratory disease. The review consisted of 360 studies investigating 19 risk factors associated with respiratory conditions. Each fall into one of four categories, namely, (1) outdoor environment-related factors; (2) indoor air pollution-related factors; (3) housing non-structure-related factors; or (4) housing structure-related factors. The results show that effects of poor housing conditions on occupants' respiratory health is a growing research field, where poor indoor air quality, mainly due to a lack of adequate ventilation, was found to be the most influential risk factor. Usage of solid fuel and living in an urban area without a pollutant-free air filtration system are the main risk factors related to inadequate ventilation. Therefore, an adequate and reliable ventilation system with air-infiltration was considered to be the main mitigation solution to improve indoor air quality. It is suggested that government organisations and health practitioners could use the identified risk factors to measure the healthiness of existing dwellings and take measures to improve existing conditions and develop regulations for new housing construction to promote the healthy home concept. Further research is needed for risk mitigation strategies to reduce the respiratory health burden attributed to housing. This study investigated the effect of hemp fiber pretreatments (water and sodium hydroxide) combined with silane treatment, first on the fiber properties (microscale) and then on polylactide (PLA) composite properties (macroscale). At the microscale, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy investigations highlighted structural alterations in the fibers, with the removal of targeted components and rearrangement in the cell wall. These structural changes influenced unitary fiber properties. At the macroscale, both pretreatments increased the composites' tensile properties, despite their negative impact on fiber performance. Additionally, silane treatment improved composite performance thanks to higher performance of the fibers themselves and improved fiber compatibility with the PLA matrix brought on by the silane couplings. PLA composites reinforced by 30 wt.% alkali and silane treated hemp fibers exhibited the highest tensile strength (62 MPa), flexural strength (113 MPa), and Young's modulus (7.6 GPa). Overall, the paper demonstrates the applicability of locally grown, frost-retted hemp fibers for the development of bio-based composites with low density (1.13 to 1.23 g cm-3).Styrene monooxygenases are a group of highly selective enzymes able to catalyse the epoxidation of alkenes to corresponding chiral epoxides in excellent enantiopurity. Chiral compounds containing oxirane ring or products of their hydrolysis represent key building blocks and precursors in organic synthesis in the pharmaceutical industry, and many of them are produced on an industrial scale. Two-component recombinant styrene monooxygenase (SMO) from Marinobacterium litorale was expressed as a fused protein (StyAL2StyB) in Escherichia coli BL21(DE3). By high cell density fermentation, 35 gDCW/L of biomass with overexpressed SMO was produced. SMO exhibited excellent stability, broad substrate specificity, and enantioselectivity, as it remained active for months and converted a group of alkenes to corresponding chiral epoxides in high enantiomeric excess (˃95-99% ee). Optically pure (S)-4-chlorostyrene oxide, (S)-allylbenzene oxide, (2R,5R)-1,25,6-diepoxyhexane, 2-(3-bromopropyl)oxirane, and (S)-4-(oxiran-2-yl)butan-1-ol were prepared by whole-cell SMO.
