This study presented clear knowledge regarding OPP contamination and possible risk for aquatic ecosystems. Hence, OPPs should be listed as one of the main priority contaminants in pesticide mitigation management in the future.Groundwater is one of the most important sources of water for drinking and cooking in rural India. A total of 382 groundwater samples were collected from 58 villages and analyzed for HMs and Sr by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The average concentrations of HMs and Sr in water was in the order of strontium (Sr) > arsenic (As) > chromium (Cr) > lead (Pb) > mercury (Hg) > cadmium (Cd). Out of 58 villages, 21, 37, 35, 35, 35 and 39 villages had Cr, As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Sr higher (WHO limit) than their respectively permissible levels. Health risk assessment of HMs and Sr for humans revealed that the non-carcinogenicity hazard quotients (HQi+d) for HMs and Sr were higher than unity for adult and children. The hazard index (HI) was 531.066 for adult and 902.926 for children. The HI > 1 was observed in 45 villages for adults and 56 villages for children. The lifetime cancer risk in adult for Asi, Asd, and Pbi in 36, 25 and 23 villages, whereas in children was 42, 20 and 22 villages, respectively. In conclusion, the health risks arising from consumption of groundwater containing HMs and Sr indicated that there is a significant carcinogenic risks for adult and children. This is the first attempt to provide information on the health risks of Sr in drinking water in India. The present findings can be useful for the development of potential strategies for risk control and management.The aim of this research is to investigate the interception effect of heavy metals, such as zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), and cadmium (Cd) in different ages of Chinese fir plantations. The study was conducted in 21-year-old (CF21, near mature stand) and 29-year-old (CF29, old stand) pure Chinese fir forest stands (CF) as well as a mixed coniferous and broad-leaved forest stand (MF) in Huitong from November 2016 to October 2017. The study results revealed the variation ranges of interception of Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Pb by the research forest stands were respectively, 3.436-36.778 mg·m-2·month-1, 7.458-98.763 mg·m-2·month-1, 0.003-0.608 mg·m-2·month-1, 0.094-4.471 mg·m-2·month-1, and 1.251-23.141 mg·m-2·month-1. Compared with the different ages of CF, the average monthly interception of Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Pb in CF21 were respectively, higher 6.0%, - 3.3%, 59.0%, 1.4%, and 3.4% than those in CF29. However, seasonal changes of that in CF of different ages were those in CF21 > in CF29 in summer and autumn, and those in CF21 less then in CF29 in winter and spring. Compared in different forest types, the average monthly interception of Cu, Zn, Cd, As, and Pb in MF was respectively, higher 20.2%, 5.8%, 185.2%, 2.6%, and 12.3% than those in CF. Furthermore, the seasonal flux of heavy metal retention in the forest ecosystems was higher during winter and spring than in summer and in autumn. This study provided an important information regarding the dynamics of heavy metal interception in forest ecosystems.While fundamental research into key mechanisms and interactions is important, the practical investigations that scientists also undertake have additional considerations, since the results are applicable in the real world but need disseminating in a way that reaches the intended audience. Worldwide, rapid population growth produces multiple pressures on land, meaning agriculture must become more efficient and productive. Other pressures on farmers are also increasing to meet environmental quality standards, to follow legislation about application of chemical products, to remain financially viable against uncertain markets, and more. Applied research addresses specific aspects, but often reports do not describe local contexts or are too restricted, lacking details that enable an understanding of their wider application. We illustrate from our experience within UK agriculture, with a particular focus on soil, the identification of current shortcomings in many research publications; provide examples of good practice; and make suggestions for how scientists can help agriculturalists use their work to address the global issues currently faced. Specifically, we recommend that communication between science and agricultural communities is nurtured, to improve mutual understanding and facilitate two-way flow of ideas. In scientific publications, provision of as much contextual information as possible, and consideration for climatic/temporal/location influences, will enable investigations and results to be used for maximum practical effect and should increase citations.Zinc is an essential trace element and a vital microelement for human health. Zinc can be toxic when exposures exceed physiological needs. Toxic effects in humans are most evident from inhalation exposure to high concentrations of Zn compounds. Urban air pollution can be especially dangerous due to the Zn content in airborne dust. Tree leaves can absorb significant levels of zinc. In this study, leaf deposition of Zn was investigated in Chelyabinsk, Russia. Russian zinc production plant and metallurgical plant are located in Chelyabinsk. Extremely high concentrations of Zn (316-4000 mg kg-1) were found in the leaves of birch trees. It is well known that traffic also is Zn source in an urban environment. Trees, growing at the different distances from zinc production and metallurgical plants and road to identify the contribution of each source (road or industry), were studied. Through SEM analysis, the prevalence of small particulates (PM10 and less), containing Zn, illustrated leaf Zn deposition from the air by passing root accumulation. It was shown that emission of zinc production plant and the metallurgical plant is the main source of leaf Zn deposition in Chelyabinsk.Human activities, especially in industry, have contributed to soil contamination with heavy or toxic metals. The objective of this study was to determine the chelating effect and antioxidant activity of pyrogallol, as well as to evaluate its cytoprotective activity in prokaryotic and eukaryotic models, animal and plant, respectively, against toxic mercury chloride action. Antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH where pyrogallol showed considerable action, chelating even iron ions. For the microbiologic activity assays, microdilution was performed to obtain the minimal inhibitory concentration, minimum bactericidal and minimum fungicide concentration, from which the sub-inhibitory concentrations were determined. The product did not conferred cytoprotection to the tested bacteria and fungi. To evaluate plant cytoprotection, Lactuta sativa seeds were used together with the product at a sub-allelopathic concentration with different HgCl2 concentrations. In this case, the tannin conferred cytoprotection to the plant model, allowing the best growth and development of caulicles and radicles, thus preserving tissues necessary for plant survival. From the results, it is observable that pyrogallol possesses cytoprotective action in the eukaryotic plant model, this action being useful as an alternative which favors the growth of plants in contaminated areas, as the recovering of crop fields or reforestation projects.Background Research is lacking regarding the eating habits of cartoon characters in relation to their body weight. The present study explored the context of food consumption and the cartoon characters' traits, according to body weight. Studies show that slim cartoon characters are usually considered as attractive; however, little is known regarding the type of messages projected about their physical appearance. Method One hundred episodes of ten series with high TV audience rates were reviewed. Characters' body weight status was classified into underweight, normal weight, and overweight, and food consumed as processed and less processed. Characters' traits such as physical activity and attractiveness were classified as positive, negative, or neutral. Comments made by the characters themselves regarding their proper physical appearance or the appearance of partner characters were recorded and classified as positive or negative. Results Results show that characters' body weight was related to both type and quantity of foods consumed, as 58% of the non-core and 48% of all foods were actually eaten by oversized characters. Positive characters' traits, as defined by attractiveness and physical activity engagement, referred consistently to slim characters, with nine out of ten shown as good-looking and physically active. In addition, the majority (51 out of 58) of the positive comments on physical appearance were recorded for slim and attractive characters, either expressed by fellow actors or the characters themselves. Conclusion Body weight of cartoon characters seems to follow stereotypic perceptions which value slimness and relate unhealthy food consumption with overweight.Background Informal caregivers of patients admitted to the neuroscience intensive care unit (Neuro-ICU) are at risk for developing chronic anxiety. Resiliency factors may reduce risk, yet their differential effects for female and male caregivers have not been studied in this population. We aim to examine interactions between gender and baseline resiliency factors and anxiety at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. Method Prospectively studied caregivers (N = 96) of patients admitted to the Neuro-ICU completed baseline sociodemographics and resiliency measures (coping, mindfulness, self-efficacy, intimate care, and caregiver preparedness), and anxiety severity at baseline (hospitalization), 3 months, and 6 months. selleck chemical Results Baseline anxiety predicted future anxiety (3 and 6 months). Caregivers who reported high (versus low) baseline coping, mindfulness, self-efficacy, and preparedness for caregiving reported lower baseline anxiety (ps ≤ 0.012). An interaction between caregiver gender and baseline mindfulness was seen at 3 months (p = 0.021), with high mindfulness males reporting lower anxiety than high mindfulness females, and low mindfulness males reporting higher anxiety than low mindfulness females. Conclusion Results emphasize the protective role of resilience in the trajectory of anxiety among informal caregivers. Findings emphasize the need to rapidly deploy skills-based treatment to Neuro-ICU caregivers to prevent future development and maintenance of anxiety, specifically emphasizing mindfulness in male caregivers.Background Although self-help strategies to improve sleep are widely accessible, little is known about the ways in which individuals interact with these resources and the extent to which people are successful at improving their own sleep based on sleep health recommendations. The present study developed a lab-based model of self-help behavior by observing the development of sleep health improvement plans (SHIPs) and examining factors that may influence SHIP development. Method Sixty healthy, young adults were identified as poor sleepers during one week of actigraphy baseline and recruited to develop and implement a SHIP. Participants viewed a list of sleep health recommendations through an eye tracker and provided information on their current sleep health habits. Each participant implemented their SHIP for 1 week during which sleep was assessed with actigraphy. Results Current sleep health habits, but not patterns of visual attention, predicted SHIP goal selection. Sleep duration increased significantly during the week of SHIP implementation.
