Defence-related genes were upregulated and enzyme activities were enhanced in rice treated with isolate TF-04. Our research supplies a microbiome-guided approach to screen biological control agents and provides Talaromyces isolates to biologically control rice sheath blight. The amalgamation of different disciplines is at the heart of reticular chemistry and has broadened the boundaries of chemistry by opening up an infinite space of chemical composition, structure, and material properties. Reticular design has enabled the precise prediction of crystalline framework structures, tunability of chemical composition, incorporation of various functionalities onto the framework backbone, and as a consequence, fine-tuning of metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) properties beyond that of any other material class. Leveraging the unique properties of reticular materials has resulted in significant advances from both a fundamental and an applied perspective. Here, we wish to review the milestones in MOF and COF research and give a critical view on progress in their real-world applications. Finally, we briefly discuss the major challenges in the field that need to be addressed to pave the way for industrial applications.

The use of telephone in delivering cancer care increases, but not in cancer workup. Current protocols for breaking bad news assume a single in-person meeting. Cancer workup involves multiple opportunities for patient information. We investigated the psychosocial consequences in gradually informed patients of receiving lung cancer workup results by telephone versus in-person.

A randomised, controlled, open-label, assessor-blinded, single-centre trial including patients referred for invasive workup for suspected malignancy (clinical trials no. NCT04315207). Patients were informed on probable cancer at referral, after imaging, and on the day of invasive workup (Baseline visit). Primary endpoint change (Δ) from baseline to follow-up (4weeks after receiving workup results) in scores of a validated, sensitive, condition-specific questionnaire (COS-LC) assessing consequences on anxiety, behaviour, dejection and sleep.

Of 492 eligible patients, we randomised 255 patients (mean age 68years; female 38%; malignancy diagnosed 68%) to the telephone (n=129) or in-person (n=126) group. Groups were comparable at baseline and follow-up, and no between-groups difference in ΔCOS-LC was observed in the intention-to-treat population, or in subgroups diagnosed with or without malignancy.

Breaking final result of cancer workup by telephone is not associated with adverse psychosocial consequences compared to in-person conversation in well-informed patients.

Successful application of phages requires detailed knowledge about the variability in phage susceptibility of the host communities. In this study, we analysed the genetic diversity of F. psychrophilum hosts and phages from the Baltic Sea area to identify genetic determinants of phage-host interaction patterns. A host range analysis of 103 phages tested against 177 F. psychrophilum strains (18 231 phage-host interactions) identified nine phage clusters, infecting from 10% to 91% of the strain collection. The core genome-based comparison of 35 F. psychrophilum isolates revealed an extremely low overall genomic diversity (>99.5% similarity). However, a small subset of 16 ORFs, including genes involved in the type IX secretion system (T9SS), gliding motility and hypothetical cell-surface related proteins, exhibited a highly elevated genetic diversity. These specific genetic variations were linked to variability in phage infection patterns obtained from experimental studies, indicating that these genes are key determinants of phage susceptibility. These findings provide novel insights on the molecular mechanisms determining phage susceptibility in F. psychrophilum and emphasizes the importance of phages as drivers of core genomic diversity in this pathogen.Bacteria are a globally sustainable source of fixed nitrogen, which is essential for life and crucial for modern agriculture. Many nitrogen-fixing bacteria are agriculturally important, including bacteria known as rhizobia that participate in growth-promoting symbioses with legume plants throughout the world. To be effective symbionts, rhizobia must overcome multiple environmental challenges from surviving in the soil, to transitioning to the plant environment, to maintaining high metabolic activity within root nodules. learn more Climate change threatens to exacerbate these challenges, especially through fluctuations in soil water potential. Understanding how rhizobia cope with environmental stress is crucial for maintaining agricultural yields in the coming century. The bacterial outer membrane is the first line of defence against physical and chemical environmental stresses, and lipids play a crucial role in determining the robustness of the outer membrane. In particular, structural remodelling of lipid A and sterol-analogues known as hopanoids are instrumental in stress acclimation. Here, we discuss how the unique outer membrane lipid composition of rhizobia may underpin their resilience in the face of increasing osmotic stress expected due to climate change, illustrating the importance of studying microbial membranes and highlighting potential avenues towards more sustainable soil additives.

Epithelioid haemangioendothelioma (EHE) is an ultrarare vascular sarcoma with an incidence of <1/million/year and a large clinical heterogeneity. Data on supportive care needs of rare cancer patients are scarce. This study aimed to investigate the level of supportive care needs of EHE patients and its association with sociodemographic, clinical and symptom burden characteristics.

We present secondary data of a cross-sectional questionnaire study involving EHE patients recruited from the international EHE Facebook group. Data were collected using the web-based PROFILES registry. Unmet needs were measured with Supportive Care Needs Survey Short Form (SCNS-SF34).

115 EHE patients from 20 countries completed the online questionnaire. Mean level of supportive care needs was 68.4 (range 34-170), with the highest mean score on the psychological domain. Supportive care needs were associated with age, disease stage, years since diagnosis and number of tumour locations. Highly symptomatic patients (33%) reported more supportive care needs than patients with low or intermediate symptom burden.

Supportive care needs were found in all domains, highest in the psychological domain, and were associated with sociodemographic, clinical and symptom burden characteristics. Adequate and tailored supportive care should be offered especially to highly symptomatic EHE patients.

The rapid review consisted of two elements, the first was a review of guidance published by national and international agencies relating to measures to support those in isolation (due to case status) or quarantine (due to close contact status) during the Covid-19 pandemic. Five categories of support measures were identified in the international guidance, they were Psychological, addiction and safety supports, Essential supplies, Financial aid, Information provision and Enforcement. The second element was a rapid literature review of the effectiveness of measures used to support individuals in isolation or quarantine during any pandemic or epidemic setting, due to respiratory pathogens. A systematic search of published peer-reviewed articles and nonpeer-reviewed pre-prints was undertaken from 1 January 2000 to 26 January 2021. Two Australian publications met the inclusion criteria, both based on data from a survey undertaken during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic. The first reported that 55% of households were fully compliant with quarantine recommendations, and that there was increased compliance reported in households that understood what they were meant to do compared with those who reported that they did not (odds ratio [OR] 2.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.35-3.80). The second reported that access to paid sick and or carer's leave did not predict compliance with quarantine recommendations (OR 2.07, 95% CI 0.82-5.23). Neither reported on reduction in transmission.Safeguarding of genome integrity is a key process in all living organisms. Due to their sessile lifestyle, plants are particularly exposed to all kinds of stress conditions that could induce DNA damage. However, very few genes involved in the maintenance of genome integrity are indispensable to plants' viability. One remarkable exception is the POLQ gene, which encodes DNA polymerase theta (Pol θ), a non-replicative polymerase involved in trans-lesion synthesis during DNA replication and double-strand break (DSB) repair. The Arabidopsis tebichi (teb) mutants, deficient in Pol θ, have been reported to display severe developmental defects, leading to the conclusion that Pol θ is required for normal plant development. However, this essential role of Pol θ in plants is challenged by contradictory reports regarding the phenotypic defects of teb mutants and the recent finding that rice (Oryza sativa) null mutants develop normally. Here we show that the phenotype of teb mutants is highly variable. Taking advantage of hypomorphic mutants for the replicative DNA polymerase epsilon, which display constitutive replicative stress, we show that Pol θ allows maintenance of meristem activity when DNA replication is partially compromised. Furthermore, we found that the phenotype of Pol θ mutants can be aggravated by modifying their growth conditions, suggesting that environmental conditions impact the basal level of replicative stress and providing evidence for a link between plants' responses to adverse conditions and mechanisms involved in the maintenance of genome integrity.Trabecular plates and rods determine apparent elastic modulus and yield strength of trabecular bone, serving as important indicators of bone's mechanical integrity in health and disease. Although trabecular bone's apparent-level mechanical properties have been widely reported, tissue mechanical properties of individual trabeculae have not been fully characterized. We systematically measured tissue mineral density (TMD)-dependent elastic modulus of individual trabeculae using microindentation and characterized its anisotropy as a function of trabecular type (plate or rod), trabecular orientation in the global coordinate (longitudinal, oblique, or transverse along the anatomic loading axis), and indentation direction along the local trabecular coordinate (axial or lateral). Human trabecular bone samples were scanned by micro-computed tomography for TMD and microstructural measurements. Individual trabecula segmentation was used to decompose trabecular network into individual trabeculae, where trabecular type and orientation were determined.
