Background In 2013, the American Thyroid Association (ATA) issued a "Policy Statement on Thyroid Shielding During Diagnostic Medical and Dental Radiology." The recently updated National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurement Radiation Protection in Dentistry and Oral and Maxillofacial Imaging (NCRP Report No. 177) prompts this review of progress related to patient thyroid shielding since the ATA statement was published. Summary Relevant publications appearing since the ATA statement were identified by querying PubMed for "thyroid and dental and (collar or shielding)" and substituting specific dental radiographic procedures in the search. The search was expanded by reviewing the cited papers in the PubMed-retrieved papers and by use of the Web of Science to retrieve papers citing the PubMed retrieved publications. Although many quantitative studies have appeared reflective of current dental radiographic instrumentation and practice, much more can be done to foster minimizing radiation to the thyroid. Conclusions We list seven areas that should be pursued. Among them are harmonizing guidelines for the use of thyroid collars based on the recent studies and a comprehensive survey of current dental radiological practice patterns.This study investigates college students' exposure to messages about campus dating and sexual violence (DSV) to discover classes of students based on the message source. Latent class analysis was performed with data assessing 5,284 students' exposure to 16 different sources of information regarding DSV, from having a professor discuss these topics to participating in related campus events. Several variables were included in the analysis to understand students' class membership in relation to pertinent student demographic factors. The best model indicated that there are five classes of students based on their exposure to messages, with some subgroups of students having high exposure to various sources of messages about DSV while others have low exposure. Still other subgroups are primarily exposed to messages through nonactive or noninstitutional sources of information. Subgroups of students, based on their exposure to DSV messaging, also differ regarding demographic makeup. The implications from these results include the need to tailor DSV programming on campus to subgroups of students based on their varying baseline levels of message exposure. As students are exposed to messaging through differing sources, including passive and noninstitutional, institutions can use this information when designing outreach efforts to better fit with the needs of various subgroups of students.
To capture and monitor flu-like symptoms in relation to the clinical characteristics and the oncologic treatment of a large head and neck cancer (HNC) patient cohort during the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Patients were monitored through by 2 rounds of interviews. Clinical characteristics of patients with no symptoms (group 0) and of those reporting ⩾1 (group A), ⩾3 (group B), or ⩾5 symptoms (group C) were analyzed. Patients with ⩾1 symptom at both interviews were defined as group A2.
Five hundred patients with HNC were analyzed. A higher frequency of patients with the following characteristics was observed in group A vs group 0 active treatment (40% vs 24%,
= 0.0002), gastrostomy (6% vs 2%,
= 0.027), recent active treatment (48% vs 29%,
< 0.0001), and higher number of concomitant medications (
= 0.01). A lower median age was observed in group B vs group no-B (patients with fewer than three symptoms) (59 vs 63.55 years,
= 0.016) and in group A2 vs group no-A2 (patients without at least one symptom at both interviews) (56 vs 63 years,
= 0.021); patients in group B received more recent active treatment than those in group no-B and in group A2 vs those in group no-A2 (
= 0.024 and 0.043, respectively); patients in group B had a lower body mass index than those in group no-B (22.4 vs 23.93 kg/m
,
= 0.0066).
This work is based on patient-reported symptoms and signs independently of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) testing. In the future, these results might serve as a a benchmark for clinicians triaging and managing patients with HNC during infectious outbreaks involving flu-like symptoms.

In the future, these results might serve as a a benchmark for clinicians triaging and managing patients with HNC during infectious outbreaks involving flu-like symptoms.Several studies claimed C60 fullerenes as a prospective geroprotector drug due to their ability to capture free radicals effectively and caused a profound interest in C60 in life extension communities. Multiple additives are already sold for human consumption despite a small body of evidence supporting the beneficial effects of fullerenes on the lifespan. To test the effect of C60 fullerenes on lifespan and healthspan, we administered C60 fullerenes dissolved in virgin olive oil orally to 10-12 months old CBA/Ca mice of both genders for 7 months and assessed their survival. To uncover C60 and virgin olive effects, we established two control groups mice treated with virgin olive oil (vehicle) and mice treated with drinking water. To measure healthspan, we conducted daily monitoring of health condition and lethality and monthly bodyweight measurements. We also assessed physical activity, glucose metabolism, and hematological parameters every 3 months. TAPI-1 mouse We did not observe health deterioration in the animals treated with C60 compared with the control groups. Treatment of mice with C60 fullerenes resulted in an increased lifespan of males and females compared with the olive oil-treated animals. The lifespan of C60-treated mice was similar to the mice treated with water. These results suggest that the lifespan-extending effect in C60-treated mice appears due to the protective effect of fullerenes in opposition to the negative effect of olive oil in CBA/Ca mice.Reports of chilblain-like lesions (CLL) coinciding with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have been described in the literature, but this phenomenon has not been critically summarized. The aim of this paper is to summarize reports of CLL coinciding with SARS-CoV-2 infection to clarify the prevalence, clinical relevance, and prognostic value of these lesions. A literature search was conducted using the Embase, Pubmed, and Scopus databases from December 2019 to June 16, 2020 using the search terms ("COVID-19" OR "coronavirus" OR "2019-nCoV" OR "SARS-CoV-2") AND ("chilblain-like" OR "COVID toes" OR "acral"). Papers that described skin changes in patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 were included. A total of 31 papers were summarized, representing 813 cases of CLL. Available data suggests an equal gender distribution, mean age of 21 years, and median age of 14 years. Mild extracutaneous symptoms were reported in 53% of cases and 47% were asymptomatic. CLL occurred an average of 16 days after extracutaneous symptoms. Patients with CLL were positive for SARS-CoV-2 in 15% of cases. Lesions were mainly described as asymptomatic and/or pruritic erythematous to violaceous acral macules and plaques. Partial or complete resolution occurred in 85% of cases in a mean of 13 days. The most common histologic findings were perivascular and perieccrine superficial and deep lymphocytic infiltrates. Although a causal relationship between CLL and SARS-CoV-2 has not been confirmed, the temporal association and 15% positive SARS-CoV-2 rate in affected individuals should not be ignored.Acromegaly is a pathological condition that is caused by over-secretion of growth hormone (GH) and develops primarily from a pituitary adenoma. Excess GH exposure over a prolonged period of time leads to a wide range of systemic manifestations and comorbidities. link2 Studying the effect of excess GH on the cellular level could help to understand the underlying causes of acromegaly health complications and comorbidities. In our previous publications, we have shown that excess GH reduces body side population (SP) stem cells and induces signs of premature ageing in an acromegaly zebrafish model. Here, we study acromegaly ageing in greater depth at the level of gene expression. We investigated whether acromegaly induces an ageing genetic signature in different organs. Using the GenAge database, our acromegaly model showed a significant enrichment of ageing genetic datasets in the muscle but not in other organs. Likewise, the hierarchical clustering of wild type (WT), acromegaly and aged RNA data from various organs revealed the similarity of gene expression profiles between the acromegaly and the aged muscles. We therefore identified overlapping differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in different organs between acromegaly and aged zebrafish. Importantly, about half of the muscle, liver and brain acromegaly DEGs overlapped with aged zebrafish DEGs. Interestingly, overlapping was observed in the same way; acromegaly-up DEGs overlapped with aged zebrafish up DEGs, not down DEGs, and vice versa. We then identified the biological functions of overlapping DEGs. Enrichment database analysis and gene ontology showed that most overlapping muscle genes were involved in ageing metabolism, while overlapping liver DEGs were involved in metabolic pathways, response to hypoxia and endoplasmic reticulum stress. Thus, this study provides a full ageing genetic signature of acromegaly at the gene expression level.With lifetime intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization rates for self-identified men between 14% and 20%, and an expanding understanding of gender as a nonbinary construct, practitioners in some clinical environments have expressed interest in screening all patients for IPV. Yet, few IPV screening instruments have been validated for use in nonfemale populations. This research tests the appropriateness and acceptability of a screening instrument developed for use with women.A literature review was completed to determine the current state of research into IPV screening practices tailored to men. Next, cognitive interviews were conducted to test a 9-question IPV screening instrument with men considered at average and elevated risk for experiencing partner violence. Participants were read the questions aloud and asked about item comprehension and question appropriateness and acceptability.The literature review uncovered no published reports describing routine clinic based IPV screening of men, and only two screening instruments had been validated with men. Twenty men participated in cognitive interviews from a variety of settings in a large urban center. All participants accurately described the intended meaning of each question and verified the appropriateness of asking the questions.This work addresses the gap in research on routine IPV screening with men, building on efforts to screen individuals and support improved health and response to violence to those across the gender spectrum.
A lack of representation of skin of color (SoC) in dermatology curricula is well-documented across North American medical schools and may present a barrier to equitable and comprehensive undergraduate medical education.
This study aims to examine representation in dermatologic educational materials and appreciate a link between bias in dermatologic education and student diagnostic ability and self-rated confidence.
The University of Toronto Dermatology Undergraduate Medical Education curriculum was examined for the percentage photographic representation of SoC. A survey of 10 multiple-choice questions was administered to first- and third-year medical students at the University of Toronto to assess diagnostic accuracy and self-rated confidence in diagnosis of 5 common skin lesions in Fitzpatrick skin phototypes (SPT) I-III (white skin) and VI-VI (SoC).
The curriculum audit showed that <7% of all images of skin disease were in SoC. link3 Diagnostic accuracy was fair for both first- (77.8% and 85.9%) and third-year (71.
