Decision makers spend significant time and effort interpreting information derived from large multidimensional databases; data are usually represented by several dashboard diagrams. The Complexity Design (CoDe) methodology provides a technique modeling graphical reports on data extracted by a data warehouse, where the charts composing the dashboard diagrams are integrated with a visual representation of the logical relationships among them. The generated visualizations (CoDe Graphs) are automatically obtained by connecting dashboard diagrams through graphical conceptual links. After analyzing the state of the art regarding the evaluation of graphical representation comprehensibility, we propose a classification of those evaluation approaches and evaluate the comprehensibility of CoDe Graphs concerning dashboard reports through a controlled experiment, involving 47 participants. Results show that CoDe Graphs reduce participants effort while improving effectiveness and efficiency in comprehension tasks. We aimed to examine heel prick (capillary) and serum thyroid function test (TFT) results in neonates with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) to evaluate the effect of asphyxia and therapeutic hypothermia (TH) on thyroid functions. This retrospective chart review included infants who were born after 34 weeks of gestation, were diagnosed and treated for HIE. The patients were divided into those who did and did not undergo TH and the groups were compared in terms of demographic characteristics, laboratory results, capillary thyroid-stimulating hormone (cTSH) levels, and serum thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and free thyroxine (fT4) levels. A total of 111 neonates were included in the study. There was no difference between the TH group (n = 90) and the nonhypothermia group (n = 21) in terms of median gestational age (38.3 ± 2.1 weeks vs. 38.6 ± 1.8 weeks, p = 0.42) or birth weight (3182 ± 509 g vs. 3174 ± 573 g, p = 0.72). Serum TFT was performed at a median of 10 days (range, 2-43) and capillary TSH analyzed at a median of 6 days (range, 1-26). Capillary TSH at 96 hours was analyzed in 36 patients in the TH group and 19 patients in the nonhypothermia group. Serum TSH and fT4 levels were similar in both groups (p = 0.29, p = 0.1). Overall cTSH and cTSH obtained in the first 4 days were 2.2 (0.5-10) and 4.3 (0.5-94), p = 0.059; 2 (0.5-22) and 5 (0.5-94), p = 0.04, respectively, whereas cTSH obtained after day 4 was similar in both groups (p = 0.058). Abnormal serum TSH (>5.5 mU/mL) was more frequent in the hypothermia group (44.4% vs. 19%, p = 0.026). Our results suggest that TH may cause some alterations on TFTs. Therefore, it may be reasonable to repeat TSH screening after TH.Aim Orthostatic Hypotension (OH) is an indicator of deteriorating autonomic dysfunction. Adherence to BP and OH measurement guidelines in an inpatient specialist palliative care unit (SPCU) was unknown. Compliance of BP and OH measurement in an advanced cancer cohort was audited. Methods A retrospective analysis of four consecutive months of patients admitted with an advanced cancer diagnosis to the inpatient SPCU was conducted. Data was obtained from 168 clinical records, and audited against current institutional clinical standards. Results Falls risk screening including BP and OH measurements were not measured on admission in 19% (n=32) cases as recommended by institutional guidelines. Where falls risks were identified in 94 (69%) patients only 71 (76%) of these had completed risk assessments. OH testing was incomplete or not conducted in 59% (n=42) of risk assessments. This had patient care and safety implications e.g. under-reporting falls risk. In addition, institutional guidelines were inflexible in clinical practice specific to a palliative care cohort of patient. Conclusions Institutional guidelines need regular reviewing. In cases where a healthcare professional determines it is inappropriate to perform an assessment, we recommend a modification to the tools allowing for recording of this decision. OH is an underestimated reality in hospice populations and the impact on hospice services is worthy of further study.L-theanine involves a great number of health benefits and dietary supplements containing this molecule are becoming increasingly popular. There is, therefore, a growing need to find ways to discriminate between natural L-theanine extracted from tea leaves and the cheaper, synthetic one obtained using specific bacterial enzymes. A first attempt of stable isotope ratio analysis characterization of the possible synthetic adulterant L-theanine (δ13C of -14.3 ± 1.5‰), obtained from vegetable substrates with C4 photosynthetic cycle, and of the more expensive natural L-theanine (δ13C of -24.4 ± 1.3‰), extracted from Camellia sinensis plants with C3 photosynthetic cycle, is reported here.Flaxseed is considered an indispensable generally recognized as safe (GRAS) source of polyphenolic lignans, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), fibers as well as minerals and vitamins. The metabolite content of flaxseed reflects its nutritional and medicinal value. Therefore, the selection of flaxseed variety for food industry is dependent on its metabolome. A metabolomics approach based on liquid or gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry has been applied to discriminate different flaxseed cultivars that are commercially available in Egypt. The available Sakha cultivars were subjected to a comprehensive metabolomics and lipidomics approach for investigation of their metabolomes. Our results showed that among the screened cultivars, Sakha 6, with its yellow-colored testa, showed marked metabolic discrimination. This yellow cultivar showed high accumulation of essential amino acids. Additionally, the oil of this cultivar accumulated the highest content of the two essential PUFA alpha-linolenic acid (an ω-3 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an ω-6 fatty acid). Interestingly, the content of the main antinutritional cyanogenic glycosides such as linustatin and neolinustatin was lower, while, the content of medicinally-important secondary metabolites was higher in Sakha 6 cultivar. These results support the use of this cultivar for human consumption owing to its high nutritional and medicinal value.A total of 81 lemon juices samples were detected using an optimized UHPLC-QqQ-MS/MS method and colorimetric assays. Concentration of 3 organic acids (ascorbic acid, malic acid and citric acid), 3 saccharides (glucose, fructose and sucrose) and 6 phenolic acids (trans-p-coumaric acid, 3-hydroxybenzoic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid) were quantified. Their total polyphenol, antioxidant activity and Ferric reducing antioxidant power were also measured. For the prediction of authentic and adulterated lemon juices and commercially sourced lemonade beverages based on the acquired metabolic profile, machine learning models including linear discriminant analysis, Gaussian naïve Bayes, lasso-regularized logistic regression, random forest (RF) and support vector machine were developed based on training (70%)-cross-validation-testing (30%) workflow. The predicted accuracy on the testing set is 73-86% for different models. Individual conditional expectation analysis (how predicted probabilities change when the feature magnitude changes) was applied for model interpretation, which in particular revealed the close association of RF-probability prediction with nuance characteristics of the density distribution of metabolic features. Using established models, an open-source online dashboard was constructed for convenient classification prediction and interactive visualization in real practice.Human Breast Milk (HBM) is a storehouse of micronutrients, macronutrients, immune factors, microbiota and numerous other bioactive macromolecules. Fulfilment of optimum nutritional requirements of more than 240 million malnourished infants worldwide is possible via adequate amount (570-900 mL/d) of breast milk administration to infants in first few years of life. Technological advancements enable study of multiple components of HBM like stem cells, bioactive proteins, micro RNAs, immunoglobulins and epithelial cells to understand their role in enhancement of nutritional value of HBM. Furthermore, immunological and protective functions of HBM against various illnesses like diabetes, anemia, respiratory and cardiovascular abnormalities, otitis media and gastrointestinal diseases prove superiority of HBM over artificial milk. Panobinostat molecular weight Presence of major macronutrients like fatty acids, sphingomyelins, proteins, peptides, lactoferrin, lactalbumins, lysozymes, mucins, growth factors, oligosaccharides and cytokines increase nutritive value of HBM. In the future, HBM can serve as a carrier for delivery of drugs, vaccines and genes to infants and offer novel therapeutic applications to stimulate effective health, growth and development of infants. The review article highlights multimodal nutritional benefits of HBM, provides insight into preclinical and clinical studies of HBM-based therapeutics and encourages further research on HBM therapy to suffice nutritional needs of infants.A gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous detection and quantification of five phytogenic compounds (carvone, menthol, thymol, carvacrol and methyl salicylate) in chicken breast. Chicken breast samples were analyzed using a QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) approach using acetonitrile as extraction solvent, followed by a d-SPE (dispersive-solid phase extraction) clean up step. The linearities for the 5 substances were studied in the range between 2 and 100 μg/L and the coefficients of determination (R2) were always > 0.995. Matrix effects were also assessed by comparing the slopes obtained in solvent and chicken breast matrix. The recoveries for all the substances at 3 different spike levels (5, 10 and 50 μg/kg) were in the range 80-102% with RSDs less then 15%. The instrumental limits of quantification were in the range 2.7-4.8 μg/kg, while the reporting level of the method was 5 μg/kg for all the aforementioned compounds. The method was successfully applied to 10 chicken breasts samples from the local market.Kadsura heteroclita (Roxb) Craib stem (KHS) is a medicinal plant used for the treatment of rheumatism arthritis diseases in Tujia ethnomedicine. Thus far, the complex chemical compositions in KHS are not clear, and the levels of the major compounds in KHS are not well understood. In this study, a novel UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS method was established for the simultaneous quali-quantitative analysis of KHS. A total of 204 compounds were identified, including triterpenoids, lignans, sesquiterpenes, fatty acids, phenolic acids, and flavonoids, more than 100 of which were first discovered in KHS. Using the same method, 12 representative bioactive components were successfully quantified. The method was fully validated by linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision, stability, recovery, and matrix effects, and it was applied to quantify the 12 representative compounds in 4 batches of KHS. As this method enables retrospective data analysis and has no upper limit to the number of analytes in a single run, it can be applied to quantify more active components of KHS in the future.
