To examine whether children who are deaf or hard of hearing who have hearing parents can develop age-level vocabulary skills when they have early exposure to a sign language.

This cross-sectional study of vocabulary size included 78 children who are deaf or hard of hearing between 8 and 68months of age who were learning American Sign Language (ASL) and had hearing parents. Children who were exposed to ASL before 6months of age or between 6 and 36months of age were compared with a reference sample of 104 deaf and hard of hearing children who have parents who are deaf and sign.

Deaf and hard of hearing children with hearing parents who were exposed to ASL in the first 6months of life had age-expected receptive and expressive vocabulary growth. Children who had a short delay in ASL exposure had relatively smaller expressive but not receptive vocabulary sizes, and made rapid gains.

Although hearing parents generally learn ASL alongside their children who are deaf, their children can develop age-expected vocabulary skills when exposed to ASL during infancy. Children who are deaf with hearing parents can predictably and consistently develop age-level vocabularies at rates similar to native signers; early vocabulary skills are robust predictors of development across domains.

Even some works have shown the LCC can efficiently scavenge the intracellular and endogenous reactive oxygen species (ROS), while little work has been carried out to investigate the potential application of LCC for ROS-related treatment in biological filed, especially for the treatment of periprosthetic osteolysis in vivo. In this work, Lignin-rich (LCC-A) and carbohydrate-rich (LCC-B) fractions in wheat straw are isolated and used as the ROS scavenger to promote osteoblast differentiation and inhibit osteoclast differentiation. The chemical composition and structures are characterized by high performance anion exchange chromatography (HPAEC) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technologies (quantitative 13C NMR and 2D-HSQC NMR), respectively. The results showed LCC-A possesses higher in vitro ROS-scavenging ability than LCC-B (89.8% vs 57.8%) and to inhibit osteoclast differentiation, whereas LCC-B more significantly activates cellular antioxidant activities via the KEAP1-NRF2-ARE pathway (218.5% vs 438.0% in the level of HO-1), thus promoting osteoblast differentiation in an inflammatory environment. Moreover, the therapeutic administration of LCC-A and LCC-B for Ti-particle-induced osteolytic murine calvariae showed both of them positively regulate and restore the bone metabolism, while preventing calvaria impairment. Hence, LCC from wheat straw exhibits efficient bone protective effects, suggesting it may be used as the promising ROS scavenger for clinical treatment of periprosthetic osteolysis.Fluoroquinolone antibiotics are widely used in human and veterinary medicine. Semaglutide mouse However, untreated fluoroquinolone seriously threatens the ecosystem and human health. In this study, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) were applied for the hydrolysis of waste feathers, and the keratin particles (KPs) in a low-cost teabag were utilized to adsorb fluoroquinolone norfloxacin. Results showed that choline chloride/ethylene glycol DES rapidly hydrolyzed feathers within 10 min, and the undissolved particles effectively adsorbed norfloxacin. Adding KOH markedly shortened the hydrolysis time (6 min) and increased the adsorption ability of KPs. The optimum hydrolysis conditions were DES ratio of 1 g 4.67 g, KOH of 35.68 g L-1, and temperature of 90 °C. When KPDES+KOH of 2 g L-1, norfloxacin of 25 mg L-1, and pH0 7 were used, 94% of norfloxacin was removed in 60 min. A low-cost teabag effectively separated the KPs from the solution after adsorption and did not decrease the adsorption ability of the KPs. The Langmuir isotherm model well described the adsorption behavior of KPsDES+KOH (qmax = 79.36 mg g-1, R2 = 0.9972). In addition, acetone efficiently regenerated the exhausted KPsDES+KOH. The KPs maintained >80% of its adsorption ability after seven cycles of regeneration.Sweet-waxy is a new type of maize with waxy and sugary double recessive genes. This study aims to clarify starch structural and functional properties of this maize type. Grains with sweet-waxy and waxy phenotypes were separated from an ear using the two sweet-waxy maize hybrids of ATN and NKY as materials. Compared with waxy maize starch, the sweet-waxy maize starch mainly comprises small-sized round granules despite the typical waxy character of both starches. Mw, Mn, and relative crystallinity of sweet-waxy starch were higher than those of waxy starch in both hybrids. The average chain length of waxy starch was higher in ATN but lower in NKY compared with that of sweet-waxy starch. However, polydispersity (Mw/Mn) and F1 fraction were high in sweet-waxy and waxy starches in ATN and NKY, respectively. Breakdown viscosity, gelatinization enthalpy and temperatures of both hybrids were low in sweet-waxy starch. Peak viscosity was higher in waxy starch in NKY and similar between sweet-waxy and waxy starches in ATN. Retrogradation percentage was high and low for sweet-waxy starches in ATN and NKY, respectively. An exopolysaccharide (EPS) was purified from the probiotic bacterium Bacillus licheniformis AG-06 isolated from the polyherbal fermented traditional medicine (Ashwagandharishta) of Indian Ayurveda. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based compositional analysis exhibits the heteropolymeric nature of the EPS consisting of galactose, rhamnose, xylose, mannose, and glucose, as the monomeric units. Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analyses confirm the presence of typical carbohydrate polymer functional groups and structural units, respectively. The purified EPS demonstrates the web-like fibrous and porous nature in scanning electron microscopic and atomic force microscopic studies. The purified EPS had shown 71.83% and 67.79% of flocculation and emulsification activities, respectively. Antioxidant activity was evaluated against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), nitric oxide, and superoxide free radicals and the scavenging actions were increased in a dose-dependent manner.
