Animals that lose one sensory modality often show augmented responses to other sensory inputs. The mechanisms underpinning this cross-modal plasticity are poorly understood. We probe such mechanisms by performing a forward genetic screen for mutants with enhanced O2 perception in Caenorhabditis elegans. Multiple mutants exhibiting increased O2 responsiveness concomitantly show defects in other sensory responses. One mutant, qui-1, defective in a conserved NACHT/WD40 protein, abolishes pheromone-evoked Ca2+ responses in the ADL pheromone-sensing neurons. At the same time, ADL responsiveness to pre-synaptic input from O2-sensing neurons is heightened in qui-1, and other sensory defective mutants, resulting in enhanced neurosecretion although not increased Ca2+ responses. Expressing qui-1 selectively in ADL rescues both the qui-1 ADL neurosecretory phenotype and enhanced escape from 21% O2. Profiling ADL neurons in qui-1 mutants highlights extensive changes in gene expression, notably of many neuropeptide receptors. We show that elevated ADL expression of the conserved neuropeptide receptor NPR-22 is necessary for enhanced ADL neurosecretion in qui-1 mutants, and is sufficient to confer increased ADL neurosecretion in control animals. Sensory loss can thus confer cross-modal plasticity by changing the peptidergic connectome.

Sperm morphology varies greatly across mammalian species and this variability is especially evident in murid rodents with both sperm head shape and tail length being sexually selected traits. The Palawan spiny rat, Maxomys panglima has a longer sperm tail than that currently recorded for any other mammalian species.

The aim of the current study was to determine the sperm morphology of an individual Palawan spiny rat, M. panglima .

Light and transmission electron microscopy were carried out.

We found that the sperm tail of M. panglima has an average length of 380μm with the midpiece being approximately 185μm in length with comparatively small mitochondria but very large coarse fibres. Furthermore, the sperm head has a less acutely flexed apical hook than that of most other murid rodents including those of several other Maxomys species.

The Palawan spiny rat has a highly divergent sperm morphology with an extremely long tail. It may turn out to be an important species for testing various hypotheses of sperm form and function in mammals.

These findings suggest markedly different selective pressures may have resulted in this unique sperm morphology, the functional significance of which remains to be determined.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading of cause of death in Mississippi. We explored trends in CVD death rates among adults in Mississippi aged 35 years or older to assess changes from 2000 through 2018.

We extracted data from Mississippi Vital Statistics from 2000 through 2018. We used underlying cause-of-death codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) to identify CVD deaths; we included all cases with codes I00-I09, I11, I13, I20-I51, I60-I69, and I70. We calculated age-adjusted CVD death rates for the overall population by age, race, sex, and race-by-sex groups.

Overall, the age-adjusted CVD death rate declined from 832.3 deaths per 100,000 population in 2000 to 550.5 deaths per 100,000 in 2018, a relative decline of 33.9% and an average annual decline of -2.3% (95% CI, -2.7% to -1.8%). Age-adjusted CVD death rates declined from 2000 through 2018 for all groups, but the magnitude of decline varied by subgroup (men, -2.0%; women, -2.6%; non-Hispanic Black, -.During a survey of microbial communities in the influent (ambient water) and effluent of a water purification facility with aeration and supplement of starch as carbon source, a novel bacterial strain, designated SZ9T, was isolated from the effluent sample. Colonies of strain SZ9T were small (approximately 0.5-1.0 mm in diameter), creamy-white, circular, smooth, translucent and convex. Cells were facultative anaerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, rod-shaped, multiplied by binary fission, Gram-stain-negative, oxidase-positive and catalase-negative. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences suggested that strain SZ9T formed a lineage within the family Caulobacteraceae of the class Alphaproteobacteria and showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities to Aquidulcibacter paucihalophilus TH1-2T (92.44%), be distinguished from other genera, suggesting that it represents a novel species of a novel genus in the family Caulobacteraceae, for which the name Pseudaquidulcibacter saccharophilus gen. nov., sp. nov is proposed. The type strain is SZ9T (=CCTCC AB2021029T=KCTC 82788T).Three closely related, facultative anaerobic, Gram-stain-negative, twitching motile, short rod-shaped, non-endospore-forming, moderately thermophilic bacteria, designated strains SYSU G05001T, SYSU G05003 and SYSU G05004, were isolated from a hot spring microbial mat, collected from Rehai National Park, Tengchong, Yunnan Province, south-western China. The results of phylogenetic analysis based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that these three strains were closely related to Thermus scotoductus SE-1T (97.97, 98.18, 97.90 % sequence similarity). Whole genome sequencing and polyphasic taxonomic approach were used to determine the genomic profile and taxonomic status of the novel strain SYSU G05001T. On the basis of the presented polyphasic evidence and genotypic data, it is proposed that strain SYSU G05001T (=KCTC 82627T=MCCC 1K06118T) represents a novel species of the genus Thermus, for which the name Thermus brevis sp. nov. is proposed.Midlife women with HIV (WWH) are disproportionately impacted by cardiovascular disease (CVD), yet little is known about perceptions of CVD risk and the factors that influence engagement in heart health behaviors in this population. Few (if any) studies have used a qualitative approach to examine these perceptions, which has important implications for minimizing the negative impact of HIV-related noncommunicable diseases, the risk for which increases after midlife. Eighteen midlife WWH (aged 40-59) in Boston, MA, completed semistructured interviews to explore perceptions of CVD, HIV, and barriers and facilitators to healthy lifestyle behaviors. Interviews were analyzed via thematic analysis. Participants viewed heart health as important but were unaware of HIV-associated CVD risk. Facilitators included family and generational influences, social support, and access to resources. Physical symptoms, menopause, mental health challenges, and limited financial resources were barriers. Our results found that women had higher disabilities than men. The age-based trend of gender disparity in Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) continued to decline; that in Functional Limitation (FL) increased at first and then declined. The cohort-based trend of gender disparity in IADL showed a decreasing trend with each subsequent cohort; that in FL showed an increasing trend. Among the disablement process factors, health behaviors and social supports were the most important contributors to gender disparity in disability. The disability was higher for women than men, and the gender differences were attenuated at very old ages. To reduce gender disparities in disability, more attention should be paid to relevant factors of gender disparity in disability.

To report a bilateral diffuse uveal melanocytic proliferation (BDUMP) patient whose initial presentation was glaucoma.

Clinical review of a BDUMP case.

A 65-year-old woman presented with ocular pain of the left eye for 1 day and vision loss of the right eye for 1week. An ophthalmological examination revealed increased intraocularr pressure in the left eye and shallow anterior chamber in both eyes. BDUMP was diagnosed following a series of auxiliary examinations. After 1.5years of follow-up, progressive cataracts appeared, and the patient accepted cataract surgery in both eyes. Visual acuity improved from light perception to 20/100 in both eyes 1.5years after cataract surgery, but declined to light perception again at the last follow-up.

BDUMP can be initially presented as glaucoma, and cataract surgery can be considered in BDUMP patients in order to improve the patients' quality of life, even if exudative retinal detachment exists.

To compare the outcomes of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) versus methotrexate (MTX) in non-infectious ocular inflammatory disease (NIOID).

The study was performed as per the PRISMA Guidelines. A search identified all studies comparing MMF versus MTX in NIOID. Treatment result and side effects were primary outcomes.

Four studies enrolling 905 patients were identified. There was no significant difference between MMF and MTX groups in overall treatment success (OR=0.97, P =.96), treatment failure (OR=0.86, P =.85). MTX showed a significantly improved effect in cases involving posterior uveitis and panuveitis (OR=0.41, P =.003). In addition, MTX was associated with a faster median time to treatment success and had less side effects when compared to MTX, however this was not significant. For secondary outcomes, no significant difference was found in visual acuity and resolution of macular oedema.
