This paper presents an experimental study about the preparation, by electrospinning, of uranium carbide fibers with nanometric grain size. Viscous solutions of cellulose acetate and uranyl salts (acetate, acetylacetonate, and formate) on acetic acid and 2,4-pentanedione, adjusted to three different polymer concentrations, 10, 12.5, and 15 weight %, were used for electrospinning. Good quality precursor fibers were obtained from solutions with a 15% cellulose acetate concentration, the best ones being produced from the uranyl acetate solution. As-spun precursor fibers were then decomposed by slow heating until 823 K under argon, resulting in a mixture of nano-grained UO2 and C fibers. A last carboreduction was then carried out under vacuum at 2073 K for 2 h. The final material displayed UC2-y as the major phase, with grain sizes in the 4 nm-10 nm range. UO2+x was still present in moderate concentrations (~30 vol.%). Elexacaftor solubility dmso This is due to uncomplete carboreduction that can be explained by the fiber morphology, limiting the effective contact between C and UO2 grains.Asymptomatic bacterial vaginosis (BV) in reproductive-age women has serious obstetric and gynecological consequences. Despite its high incidence, the behavior of vaginal lactobacilli in asymptomatic BV is unknown. We analyzed the functional properties of previously isolated vaginal lactobacilli from asymptomatic women with normal, intermediate, and BV microbiota. Lactic acid and antimicrobial activity against seven urogenital pathogens were evaluated from lactobacilli cell-free culture supernatants (CFCs) (n = 207) after 48 h incubation in MRS. Lactobacilli isolates were used to evaluate H2O2, autoaggregation and coaggregation with C. albicans. Lactobacilli from normal microbiota produced more d-lactate than lactobacilli from intermediate and asymptomatic BV (p = 0.007). L. plantarum, L. fermentum and L. reuteri produced greater d-lactate whereas L. rhamnosus, L. crispatus, L. johnsonii were greater producers of l-lactate. Interspecies positive correlation was observed in the lactic acid contents of CFCs. Distribution of H2O2-producing lactobacilli did not vary significantly among the groups. When lactic acid isomers were considered, species from intermediate and BV microbiota clustered together with each other and distinctly from species of normal microbiota. Broad-spectrum antagonism (≥90% inhibition) against E. coli, C. albicans, S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, G. vaginalis, N. gonorrhoeae, S. agalactiae were displayed by 46.86% (97) of isolates. Our study highlights the differential functional properties of vaginal lactobacilli from women with normal microbiota and asymptomatic BV.Obesity predisposes to several health problems including skin diseases. However, information on the relationship between obesity and skin disorders in pets is very scarce. Leptin (LEP) is mainly produced by adipose tissue and has a prominent role in skin biology. This study evaluated the LEP system in the skin of obese dogs compared to normal-weight animals. The investigation was carried out on 10 obese (Obese group) and 10 normal-weight (Normal-weight group) dogs through Real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry. Cells of skin associated immune system were also evaluated. No differences were evidenced between the two groups as well as skin inflammation. LEP differences were no significant, while LEPR transcript appeared 10-fold higher in obesedogs than in normal-weight ones. Immunostaining for both molecules was observed in several skin structures such as the epidermis, hair follicles, and glands. No differences appeared in the skin associated immune system composition. This study is a preliminary report showing that LEP system changes in obese dog skin. The increased LEPR expression observed in the obese group suggests that the receptor plays a modulating role in the system control. However, the exact role of LEPin the skin under obesity conditions needs further elucidation. In recent years, we have witnessed a growing adoption of serious games in telerehabilitation by taking advantage of advanced multimedia technologies such as motion capture and virtual reality devices. Current serious game solutions for telerehabilitation suffer form lack of personalization and adaptiveness to patients' needs and performance. This paper introduces "RehaBot", a framework for adaptive generation of personalized serious games in the context of remote rehabilitation, using 3D motion tracking and virtual reality environments. A personalized and versatile gaming platform with embedded virtual assistants, called "Rehab bots", is created. Utilizing these rehab bots, all workout session scenes will include a guide with various sets of motions to direct patients towards performing the prescribed exercises correctly. Furthermore, the rehab bots employ a robust technique to adjust the workout difficulty level in real-time to match the patients' performance. This technique correlates and matches the patterns of the precalculated motions with patients' motions to produce a highly engaging gamified workout experience. Moreover, multimodal insights are passed to the users pointing out the joints that did not perform as anticipated along with suggestions to improve the current performance. A clinical study was conducted on patients dealing with chronic neck pain to prove the usability and effectiveness of our adjunctive online physiotherapy solution. Ten participants used the serious gaming platform, while four participants performed the traditional procedure with an active program for neck pain relief, for two weeks (10 min, 10 sessions/2 weeks). Feasibility and user experience measures were collected, and the results of experiments show that patients found our game-based adaptive solution engaging and effective, and most of them could achieve high accuracy in performing the personalized prescribed therapies.Mutant alleles of CDH23, a gene that encodes a putative calcium-dependent cell-adhesion glycoprotein with multiple cadherin-like domains, are responsible for both recessive DFNB12 nonsyndromic hearing loss (NSHL) and Usher syndrome 1D (USH1D). The encoded protein cadherin 23 (CDH23) plays a vital role in maintaining normal cochlear and retinal function. The present study's objective was to elucidate the role of DFNB12 allelic variants of CDH23 in Saudi Arabian patients. Four affected offspring of a consanguineous family with autosomal recessive moderate to profound NSHL without any vestibular or retinal dysfunction were investigated for molecular exploration of genes implicated in hearing impairment. Parallel to this study, we illustrate some possible pitfalls that resulted from unexpected allelic heterogeneity during homozygosity mapping due to identifying a shared homozygous region unrelated to the disease locus. Compound heterozygous missense variants (p.(Asp918Asn); p.(Val1670Asp)) in CDH23 were identified in affected patients by exome sequencing.
