This study identified adults' cooking practices patterns and tested their associations with children's consumption of ultra-processed foods. Cross-sectional study conducted with 551 adult-child pairs from São Paulo, Brazil. Children's food consumption was collected through dietary recalls. Adults' cooking practices were identified using a questionnaire developed for the Brazilian's context. Principal Component Analysis has been employed to identify cooking patterns and linear regression models (crude and adjusted for sociodemographic variables) have been used to test associations between pattern's scores and contribution of ultra-processed foods to total energy at dinners. Three cooking patterns were identified "Healthy", "Usual" and "Convenience". The first two patterns reflected behaviors of people who mostly cook "from scratch". Only the Healthy pattern (confidence to cook several meals using fresh foods and natural seasonings; healthier cooking techniques) was inversely associated with ultra-processed food consumption (β = -4.1; p = 0.002), whereas the Convenience pattern (less frequency and time to cook, using microwave and ready-to-heat meals) was positively associated with (β = 3.6; p = 0.008). Our results suggest that cooking at home, as an isolated action, is not enough to protect the consumption of ultra-processed foods. To promote healthy eating among children, the adults' cooking practices should be aligned with the preparation of meals made "from scratch", taking into account the healthiness of what is being cooked.

Due to COVID-19 and high demand for respirators, some healthcare professionals have been using the Halyard H600 fabric as an alternative to N95 respirators without testing the filtration efficiency of the fabric with established scientific methods. The purpose of this study was to assess the efficiency of the Halyard H600 as a respirator filtering material as compared to the NIOSH-certified N95 and P100 filters, and determine if H600 is a good alternative for respiratory protection for healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Three filter types (Halyard H600, N95, and P100) were challenged with salt particles inside an exposure chamber at a flow rate of 43 LPM and relative humidity of 40 ± 2%. N95 and P100 respirator filters were tested initially to establish the validity of the chamber, followed by the Halyard H600 fabric. Particle penetration was measured using an aerosol spectrometer. The filtration efficiency was calculated for different particle sizes by measuring the particle number co≤324 nm and the increased fabric breathing resistance demonstrate that the Halyard H600 has an inferior performance and is not a good substitute for N95 and P100. Thus, the use of the Halyard H600 fabric for respiratory protection is not recommended.Three pairs of enantiomers mucroniferals A-C (1-3), with a novel skeleton of 1,4-epoxynaphthalene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid first reported from nature source, were isolated from Corydalis mucronifera. Their structures were elucidated based on extensive spectroscopic data analysis of MS, 1D and 2D NMR, and their absolute configurations were confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis and comparison of the experimental and calculated ECD data. Mucroniferals A-C showed broad-spectrum inhibitory activities on seedling growth of all plants tested (Lepidium apetalum, Raphanus sativus, Lactuca sativa, and Arabidopsis thaliana) with a dose-dependent relationship. Additionally, mucroniferals A and B exhibited significant inhibitory effects on germination of most seeds at concentration of 80 μg/mL, and the inhibition was reversible. The chemical investigation of the secondary metabolites of Paramyrothecium roridum (homotypic synonym Myrothecium roridum), an endophytic fungus isolated from the medicinal plant Morinda officinalis, led to the isolation of twelve cytotoxic trichothecene macrolides, including two new ones, named myrothecines H and I. The structures of the new macrolides were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic measurements analyses. In addition, the cytotoxic activities of these compounds were evaluated against SF-268, NCI-H460, and HepG-2 tumor cell lines, and all isolated compounds (1-12) exhibited significant cytotoxic activity with the IC50 ranging from 0.0002-16.2 μM. Moreover, the inhibitory activity of myrothecines H and I was evidenced by inducing phosphorylation of JNK (c-Jun N-terminal protein kinase) protein and the PARP (poly ADP-ribose polymerase) cleavage, and eventually induce apoptosis of HepG-2 cells. The results indicated that myrothecines H and I could be applied as chemotherapeutic agents.Receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases (RLCKs) have been demonstrated to be involved in the regulation of growth, development, and pathogen responses in plants. However, the identity of RLCKs involved in abiotic tolerance remains elusive. In this study, we present data on OsRLCK241, a receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase that is induced by salt and drought stresses. Subcellular localization revealed the presence of an OsRLCK241-GFP fusion protein at the plasma membrane. Under normal conditions, we did not observe any measurable discrepancies between the development and growth of WT and OsRLCK241 transgenic plants. In OsRLCK241 transgenic plants, the overexpression of OsRLCK241 conferred improved tolerance to salt and drought stresses. OsRLCK241 expression improved ROS detoxification by enhancing the activities of ROS scavengers as well as the accumulation of compatible osmolytes to alleviate the osmotic stress evoked by salt and drought stresses. Additionally, several stress-responsive genes showed higher expression levels in OsRLCK241 transgenic plants upon exposure to salt and drought conditions. Collectively, our observations suggest that OsRLCK241 improved salt and drought tolerance in rice is mainly due to improved ROS detoxification, increased accumulation of osmolytes, and altered expression of stress-responsive genes.Regulated cell death (RCD) is a universal process in living organisms that is essential for tissue homeostasis or to the restoration of biological equilibrium following stress. Ferroptosis is a specific nonapoptotic cell death that is dependent on iron and is very different from other forms of RCD. Filgotinib Ferroptosis can affect the development of liver diseases such as drug-induced liver injury (DILI), liver fibrosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by regulating the level of intracellular iron, the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species, and lipid peroxides. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of ferroptosis, in terms of discovery, history, characteristics, mechanism, and the factors regulating liver diseases. We discuss how these factors and signaling pathways change in the context of liver disease. Furthermore, we focus on delineating the roles of effective therapeutic drugs or compounds in liver disease. In summary, we discuss the role of ferroptosis in liver disease, providing a strategy and new ideas for preventing liver disease, finding new therapeutic targets, and reducing liver damage.
