Drawing on hospital-based interviews and fieldwork in a deprived Parisian suburb, this paper analyses the spatio-temporal dynamics of risk, exposure, and mobilities in individual stories of undocumented Pakistani male migrants, and asylum seekers-receiving treatment for single and combined diagnoses of HIV, and Hepatitis C and B. Inviting alignments with the 'sexual' turn in mobility studies, it prioritises the interface of all-male undocumented migration, mobility, sexuality, and homosociality in circumscribing disease transmission geneaologies. It questions the extent to which illegal migration routes are transmission routes, and risk environments assume different levels of intensity in everyday life in Pakistan, during the journey, and in France. It emphasises inadequately addressed epidemics of HIV and hepatitis in Pakistan, the significance of unequal routes to migrant healthcare in France, and the transnational adaptation of homosocial and sexual behaviours, including MSM. These factors interplay with intensified vulnerabilities relating to childhood sexual abuse, family traumas, sexual risks related to illegal migration and undocumented status in France, chronic stresses leading to depleted mental and physical health, and restrictions on heterosexual sex facing marginalised migrants. Further, temporal vulnerabilities relate to the colonial criminalisation of homosexuality in Pakistan, widespread sexual violence-and forms of contemporary exclusion and hostility regarding Muslim migrants in Europe. Particularly, we emphasise the paradox, and need to sensitively address, a complex confluence of hidden risks that are deeply embedded in ethnic communities of solidarity and support. The findings trouble the tendency to partition global hepatitis and HIV prevalence rates by 'developed' and 'developing' country variation.Objectives Many persons with dementia live at home with support from home care services. Despite this, research is scarce concerning how risks in daily life among persons with dementia are perceived and handled by home care staff. This study aimed to explore how home care staff identify risks in the everyday lives of persons with dementia, and to inquire into how they reasoned about their own actions related to those risks.Method A qualitative approach was applied for the study. Both individual interviews and focus groups were conducted with home care staff (n = 23). Data was analysed using a constant comparative method.Results Identifying, reasoning and acting upon risks in the everyday lives of persons with dementia were related to several dilemmas for the home care staff. These dilemmas are described and elaborated on in three categories 1) Strategies for tracking risks, 2) Dilemmas concerning where to draw the line and deciding when to act, and 3) Dilemmas when acting on risks.Conclusion The study provides new knowledge about the dilemmas that staff in home care services may face and how they reason about managing risks in the homes of persons with dementia. The study shows that the staff had to weigh risk and safety against the autonomy of persons with dementia. Based on these findings, we want to highlight the importance of competence among home care staff and the organizational conditions that must exist in order to manage the challenges of risky situations.Objective To determine the efficacy and characteristics of psychological or educational eHealth interventions on reducing symptoms of mental illness in parents of preterm or low birthweight infants.Background Many parents suffer psychological disorders after preterm birth. Computer or mobile application-based interventions are a promising alternative.Methods We searched seven electronic databases up to January 2020 and included randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials assessing psychological or educational eHealth interventions in parents of infants born very preterm less then 32 weeks or with very low birthweight less then 1500g (primary question), or preterm less then 37 weeks or with low birthweight less then 2500g (secondary question). Primary outcomes were measures of depression, anxiety, acute stress disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder. Secondary outcomes included other indicators of mental health, quality of life and intervention characteristics. We had planned random-effects meta-analysis in our protocol (CRD42018105731).Results Of 9768 records, no study reported our primary outcomes. Three studies showed potential benefits for parental self-efficacy, discharge preparedness, parental satisfaction and family satisfaction with the neonatal intensive care unit.Conclusions We found scarce evidence on the efficacy of psychological or educational eHealth interventions on reducing mental illness in parents of preterm or low birthweight infants, highlighting the need for more research.Objectives Depression in older adults is a growing public health concern. However, limited research has focused on the issues of physical environments and depression in the elderly in Asia. The purpose of the study is to examine the relationship between the built environments and depressive symptoms in older adults using Taiwan as an example.Methods Two national datasets were used in this study, including the 2009 National Health Interview Survey and the 2006 National Land Use Investigation in Taiwan. A total of 2,155 older adults were recruited, and eight built environments were examined among 161 townships. Depressive symptoms were measured using a 10-item CES-D scale, and four sophisticated models were built using a multi-level analysis.Results Five types of built environments were found to be significantly associated with depressive symptoms in older adults. Among them, two types of built environments, 'health and medical services' and 'schools' were highly related to a lower CES-D score and lower odds of being depressed, whereas the other three built environments, 'cultural and historical facilities,' 'recreational and amusement areas,' and 'playgrounds and sports venues' were significantly associated with an increasing risk of being depressed.Conclusions Different built environments had different effects on depression and some even showed a dose-response relationship. These results can help urban planners or city designers reconsider how to facilitate the construction of built environments in neighborhoods that will improve the mental health of older adults.Even though physical activity is known to perturb the redox homeostasis and create a pro-oxidative muscular environment, robust evidence has confirmed precise, powerful and beneficial effects of regular physical activity on health. Physical exercise can activate redox-sensitive intracellular signaling pathways via reactive oxygen species (ROS)-related pathways leading to modification of muscle function through genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. However, ROS-mediated signaling also has deleterious effects on skeletal muscle function, which has been observed in several pathological conditions, such as cancer, obesity, and diabetes, among others. One of the most challenging issues debated on this topic is that of the levels of redox signaling that either promote beneficial or harmful effects to our bodies. This forum discusses the latest progress in muscle redox signaling with emphasis on muscle physiology and physiopathology.AIMS Due to their significant biological activity, thiosemicarbazones (TSC) are promising candidates for anticancer therapy. In part, the efficacy of TSCs is linked to their ability to chelate essential metal ions such as copper and iron. Triapine, the best studied anticancer TSC, has been tested clinically with promising results in hematological diseases. During the last years, a novel subclass of TSCs with improved anticancer activity was found to induce paraptosis, a recently characterized form of cell death. The aim of this study was to identify structural and chemical properties associated with anticancer activity and paraptosis induction of TSCs. RESULTS When testing a panel of structurally related TSCs, compounds with nanomolar anticancer activity and paraptosis-inducing properties showed higher copper(II) complex solution stability and a slower reduction rate, which resulted in reduced redox activity. In contrast, TSCs with lower anticancer activity induced higher levels of superoxide that rapidly stimulated superoxide dismutase expression in treated cells, effectively protecting the cells from drug-induced redox stress. INNOVATION Consequently, we hypothesize that in case of close Triapine derivatives, intracellular reduction leads to rapid dissociation of intracellularly formed copper complexes. In contrast, TSCs characterized by highly stable, slowly reducible copper(II) complexes are able to reach new intracellular targets such as the ER-resident protein disulfide isomerase. CONCLUSIONS The additional modes of actions observed with highly active TSC derivatives are based on intracellular formation of stable copper complexes, offering a new approach to combat (drug-resistant) cancer cells.Refolding of human interleukin 17A (IL-17A) has been reported; however, the key refolding protocol was not robust enough to deliver consistent results and to be easily scaled up for crystallization. Here we report an optimized refolding method for IL-17A. Although co-crystal structures of IL-17A with ligands have been obtained with a high-affinity peptide and an anti-IL-17A Fab as stabilizers, neither the production yield nor the characterization of the IL-17A/Fab complex was reported. To facilitate co-crystallization of IL-17A with small-molecule compounds derived from our DNA encoded library, we also describe the method for yield enhancement of anti-IL-17A Fab production and characterize the IL-17A/Fab complex for the first time, providing an essential prerequisite for structure-based drug discovery targeting IL-17A.To interpret a person's change score, one typically transforms the change score into, for example, a percentile, so that one knows a person's location in a distribution of change scores. Transformed scores are referred to as norms and the construction of norms is referred to as norming. Two often-used norming methods for change scores are the regression-based change approach and the T Scores for Change method. In this article, we discuss the similarities and differences between these norming methods, and use a simulation study to systematically examine the precision of the two methods and to establish the minimum sample size requirements for satisfactory precision.Fusarium circinatum is the causal agent of pitch canker, a lethal disease of pine and other conifers. Since F. XL092 datasheet circinatum is a quarantine organism, its timely detection could efficiently prevent its introduction into new areas or facilitate spread management in already infected sites. In this study, we developed a sequence-specific probe loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for F. circinatum using a field-deployable portable instrument. The assay was able to recognize the pathogen in host tissues in just 30 min, and the sensitivity of the assay made it possible to detect even small amounts of F. circinatum DNA (as low as 0.5 pg/μl). The high efficiency of this method suggests its use as a standard diagnostic tool during phytosanitary controls.
