Commercial magnetic resonance-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) systems utilize a generalized Arrhenius model to estimate the area of tissue damage based on the power and time of ablation. However, the reliability of these estimates in Vivo remains unclear.

To determine the accuracy and precision of the thermal damage estimate (TDE) calculated by commercially available MRgLITT systems using the generalized Arrhenius model.

A single-center retrospective review of pediatric patients undergoing MRgLITT for lesional epilepsy was performed. The area of each lesion was measured on both TDE and intraoperative postablation, postcontrast T1 magnetic resonance images using ImageJ. Lesions requiring multiple ablations were excluded. The strength of the correlation between TDE and postlesioning measurements was assessed via linear regression.

A total of 32 lesions were identified in 19 patients. After exclusion, 13 pairs were available for analysis. Linear regression demonstrated a strong correlation between estimated and actual ablation areas (R2=.97, P<.00001). The TDE underestimated the area of ablation by an average of 3.92% overall (standard error (SE)=4.57%), but this varied depending on the type of pathologic tissue involved. TDE accuracy and precision were highest in tubers (n=3), with average underestimation of 2.33% (SE=0.33%). TDE underestimated the lesioning of the single hypothalamic hamartoma in our series by 52%. In periventricular nodular heterotopias, TDE overestimated ablation areas by an average of 13% (n=2).

TDE reliability is variably consistent across tissue types, particularly in smaller or periventricular lesions. Further investigation is needed to understand the accuracy of this emerging minimally invasive technique.

In this study, we compared the abundance and composition of enteroparasitic assemblages of Otaria flavescens using coprological techniques. Three sampling localities from north to south spanning 2,200 km off the Chilean coast were considered (Iquique, Viña del Mar, and Talcahuano). In all, 60 fecal samples were collected, and eggs belonging to 5 taxa were found in 91.6% of the samples. They were the anisakid nematodes Contracaecum and Pseudoterranova, the cestode Adenocephalus (syn. Diphyllobothrium), the trematode Ogmogaster, and the acanthocephalan Corynosoma. Samples from southern Chile (Talcahuano) showed the highest prevalence. Adenocephalus eggs had the highest prevalence and abundance in Iquique and Talcahuano, whereas Ogmogaster was the less prevalent and abundant in all sampling localities. Corynosoma eggs had similar prevalence and abundance among sampling localities, and Pseudoterranova eggs were absent in Iquique and with median prevalence values in Viña del Mar and Talcahuano. Thus, the composition of parasite egg assemblages was different between sampling localities. These differences between sampling localities may help to explain differential records of some zoonotic parasitoses such as pseudoterranovosis and diphyllobothriosis in Peru and Chile, where consumption of raw or marinated fish (ceviche) is common. The seroprevalence of Toxoplasma in kangaroos scaled with infection pressure, but we observed no statistical difference in seroprevalence for any other species between these 2 regions. Within the region of low infection pressure, Toxoplasma seroprevalence did not differ between species. However, within the region of high Toxoplasma infection pressure, we observed large variation in seroprevalence between species. Our results demonstrate that infection pressure is not sufficient by itself, but merely necessary, to drive Toxoplasma seroprevalence in intermediate host species. Where Toxoplasma seroprevalence in an intermediate host species is already low, further reducing infection pressure will not necessarily further decrease seroprevalence in those species. This has important ramifications for the mitigation of parasite infections and suggests that reductions in Toxoplasma infection pressure, intended to reduce infections, may be most effective and applicable to species that are known to experience high rates of infection.

Adolescent depression is increasing during the COVID-19 pandemic, possibly related to dramatic social changes. Individual-level factors that contribute to social functioning, such as temperament and neural reactivity to social feedback, may confer risk for or resilience against depressive symptoms during the pandemic.

Ninety-three girls (12-17 years) oversampled for high shy/fearful temperament were recruited from a longitudinal study for a follow-up COVID-19 study. During the parent study (2016-2018), participants completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging task eliciting neural activity to performance-related social feedback. Depressive symptoms were assessed during the parent study and COVID-19 follow-up (April-May 2020). In 65 participants with complete data, we examined how interactions between temperament and neural activation to social reward or punishment in a socio-affective brain network predict depressive symptoms during COVID-19.

Depressive symptoms increased during COVID-19. Significathe pandemic when social interactions are limited. In contrast, girls lower in shy/fearful temperament with heightened neural reactivity to social reward may be highly motivated to engage socially, which could also be detrimental with limited social opportunities. In both cases, improving social connection during the pandemic may attenuate or prevent depressive symptoms.

Expandable cages are often used to reconstruct cervical corpectomies but there are few long-term follow-up studies with large numbers.

To analyze the clinical and radiographic results of cervical corpectomy reconstructed with expandable cages for degenerative stenosis.

We performed a retrospective analysis of 78 patients with degenerative cervical stenosis treated with a corpectomy reconstructed with an expandable cage. We evaluated the clinical and radiographic outcomes, as well as complications of the procedure at a minimum 2-yr follow-up.

There was a decrease in the visual analog scale pain average from 75mm to 8.5mm (P=.02); a decrease in the Neck Disability Index average from 55% to 12% (P=.009); and improvement in the Japanese Orthopaedic Association average from 12 to 14 points (P=.01). There was a change in cervical lordosis (Cobb method) average from -9.3° to -15.1° (P=.002), without significant loss of lordosis (P=.63).
